Water lily at Sutton Fen

  • 1,000+ RSPB members attended the Stop Climate Chaos Rally in November 2006.

  • Celebrations at Stormont for 40 years of the RSPB in Northern Ireland.

  • The crucial grant being approved for our new reserve and visitor centre at Saltholme on Teesside. And one step ahead, the start of ground works at the RSPB Newport Wetlands Centre – a fine outcome from the defeat at Cardiff Bay in the past.

  • Rainham Marshes opening, featuring Bill Oddie and Ruth Kelly (Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government).

  • 1146 calling corncrakes in Scotland - and 4 in England.

  • We satellite-tracked bald ibises from Syria to their wintering grounds in Ethiopia.

  • We’ve done an amazing amount to publicise the plight of albatrosses and the Albatross Task Force is starting to cut deaths from longline fishing.

  • The governments of India, Nepal and Pakistan have all announced bans on Diclofenac, the veterinary drug that’s wiping out vultures.

  • Our ‘Wildlife for All’ project, with the Royal Parks, won an important National Charity Award - fine recognition from our peers for an outstanding community project.

  • Completion of major land deals at Hesketh Out Marsh (on the Ribble, Lancs), Forsinard (Flow Country), the Migneint (north Wales), and Broadwater Warren (Kent), all accompanied by cracking grants. And acquisition of a fine slab of salt marshes on the Dee.

  • Fantastic collective effort throughout the year to enthuse people and recruit new members - from Land’s End to Sumburgh Head, from Ramsey to Titchwell, at Aren't Birds Brilliant! events and garden centres, through the media and through the post, on the London Underground, on the doorstep and online.

  • We succeeded in stopping legal logging in Harapan Forest, Sumatra, Indonesia.

  • Launch of the English 'Out of Classroom Learning Manifesto' with Alan Johnson, Secretary of State (Department for Education and Skills), three years almost to the day since we and partners launched our campaign for Real World Learning.

  • The acquisition of our 200th nature reserve - Sutton Fen.

  • Tangible evidence that our advocacy on water is having traction across the UK - from wholesale policy reform in Northern Ireland, to major progress on the ground in northern England with United Utilities and their tenants. And not forgetting the launch of a 'Blueprint for Water' at Westminster in November.

  • Income to RSPB  from  Landfill Tax topped £10 million.

  • Surprise Christmas present from Tony Blair - a letter complimenting RSPB on our campaign to Ban the Wild Bird Trade and committing the UK to press for the eventual ban in Brussels.

  • Victory on The Wash for RSPB, English Nature and, most importantly, eider ducks – against disturbance in the name of unsustainable fishing.
