What birds might you see? |
Chaffinch
The chaffinch is the UK's second commonest breeding bird, and is arguably the most colourful of the UK's finches. Both male and female chaffinches have black and white wings, and a green rump. The male has a pinky face and breast and a blue-grey crown, while the female is a sandy brown. It does not feed openly on bird feeders - you will often see chaffinches hopping about under a bird table, or hedge looking for food. In winter, migrant chaffinches from Scandinavia and Northern Europe join our resident birds. With their loud and varied call, chaffinches are more likely to be heard before being seen. Was seen in more than half of gardens (55 per cent) surveyed during Big Garden Birdwatch 2008.
