What birds might you see? |
Magpie
Magpies seem to be jacks of all trades – scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers. Its challenging, almost arrogant attitude has won it few friends. From a distance, magpies appear black and white, however a closer view reveals a subtle blue and green sheen. It feeds on a variety of foods, including scraps. In winter, these large crows are often seen in small groups. They are sedentary and rarely move more than one kilometre from their birthplace. Despite a 112 per cent increase in numbers per garden since 1979, it was only seen in 42 per cent of gardens surveyed during Big Garden Birdwatch 2008. The word magpie is a shortened form of Margaret's pie and other local names include madge, marget, miggy and maggot. Copyright for bird sound belongs to Wildsounds/Sitelle |
