What birds might you see?

Woodpigeon

BGBW 2008 USE ONLY Woodpigeon perched on fence

Woodpigeons are the largest of the pigeon family. They have small, round, grey heads with a white neck patch, pink breast, greyish backs, tail and wings.

Woodpigeons feed on grain, seeds, scraps, berries and buds and is quite partial to crops like cabbages, sprouts and peas. In flight they have distinctive white wing patches and the tail has a dark band at the end.

Although shy in the countryside it can be tame and approachable in towns and cities and was seen in 57 per cent of Big Garden Birdwatch gardens.

Its cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands as is the loud clatter of its wings when it flies away.
