Lochinver heronry project

Normally perceived as solitary characters, waiting motionless at the water's edge, we'll show you the gregarious side of grey herons as they squawk and bicker at the nest.

Get close to the action with live CCTV images from the heronry beamed on to screens in the visitor centre, and through telescopes watch the herons in their tree top home.

A cross between punk rockers and something far more prehistoric, the young chicks grow quickly. However, with our Information Officers on hand you won't miss a thing as you experience a fascinating insight into the lives of the inhabitants of the biggest heronry in the north.

Nestcam images from a blue tit nestbox will also be showing in the centre.

As well as getting the latest news on all the wildlife this spectacular corner of the country has to offer, don't forget to take in the breathtaking views over the bay.

We are also running guided walks through the season. Please enquire at the Visitor Centre for details.

This project is free, though there is a charge for the guided walks.

Opening times

The visitor centre is open Monday–Saturday, 10 am–5.30 pm (4 pm on Sunday).

The RSPB officer will be at the centre at the following times (except when there is a guided walk): Tuesday-Wednesday, 10 am–4 pm, and Thursday-Friday, 1-5 pm.

Facilities

There is a fixed telescope upstairs, a CCTV link to the heronry and a blue tit nestbox, toilets and someone to show you the birds. The Fishermen's Mission is only yards from the heronry and is a very convenient and well priced place for a snack/lunch.

How to get there

You'll find the Assynt Visitor Centre on Main Street Lochinver on the A837.
