Heron spectacular at St Albans

1 March to 27 April

Get close to magnificent nesting grey herons at our viewpoint in Verulamium Park, St Albans.

As one of the best sites in the UK to see grey herons, you'll get fantastic views of these imposing birds whether they are waiting patiently for fish by the lake, taking care of their young, or tidying their extraordinary 'tree-basket' nests.

Listen out for the noisy chicks asking for food, and hear the strange 'franking' call of the adults as they fly to and from their nests.

Lots of birds use Verulamiun Park. Our friendly staff and volunteers will be on hand to show you the wide variety of other birdlife that make the ornamental lake their home. Look out for the bright chestnut-coloured pochard and, if you're lucky, you might even see great crested grebes performing their weed-dancing courtship rituals.

This project is free to visit.

Opening times

Friendly staff and volunteers will be on hand weekends, 10 am-4 pm.

Facilities

There are two telescopes, and three sets of binoculars available for you to use.
