To RSPB Technical Support
Some of us in the LGO Group have noticed that once a discussion thread has been inactive for about 2 months, it disappears from the Forum.
Can you clarify what happens and also, once a thread has been archived, is there any way of retrieving it?
Many thanks
Hi again,
Still hoping for a reply to this query, but I have noticed that after an inactive thread has disppeared from the forum, it can still be accessed via links, tags or possibly searches.
Does there come a point when it is deleted completely and if so, when?
Many thanks,
My third attempt at getting a reply to this.......
Valid point Sue C and we deserve a reply.
I first raised this query on 4th November 09 and despite three reminders from myself and Alan P, we have not received a reply from you. As it was probably in danger of being archived itself, this is my FOURTH attempt!
Could you please clarify the rules for archiving on this site, and specifically what happens at the following stages.
1. It appears that threads which have been inactive for a while, are no longer displayed on the Forum. Is this an automatic or a manual process and in either case, what is the time period? I had the impression it was about 2 months, but on the Loch Garten Ospreys forum, we are currently no longer seeing threads where the last post was before 20th December.
2. It seems that threads which have disppeared from sight are initially still held on the system, and can in principle be found by using the Search facility. What part do Tags play in this?
3. Finally, is there a point at which threads are completely deleted from the system?
Reason for asking - on the LGO forum, we have a variety of threads running, some of which, although not active, contain info we would not want to lose. At the moment we have to keep an eye on these, and "bump" them when we see them sinking towards the bottom of the page.
It would be useful, if you could add your reply to the Help area for future reference.
Thanks, Sue
Threads only appear to disappear. They can be brought back by going down your history.
See my first post in this forum. is: http://www.rspb.org.uk/community/forums/p/3284/21477.aspx#21477
I prseume tags are a way of searching for certain topics.

Yes Tiger is right
If you go to "My Page" you will find all your post!
Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!
Hi there,
We've had a look into this and the software we use was defaulting to only showing posts from the last 2 months. Not very helpful!
We have turned this restriction off so you should be able to see all posts now.
All the best,
Graham

Hi Graham
Thank you for assisting us once again {smile}

Graham,
Thanks for your reply. I realise you may eventually need to introduce archiving at a later stage for space reasons, but 2 months was a bit short.
I can see the change has taken effect in the General Forums, but in the LGO Forum, you still can't see threads where the last post was before 20th December 09.
This isn't down to the LGO forum only being designed to have one page - it has had 2 pages on occasion, even with the 2 month restriction in place - as you may know, we are "a bit" talkative.
Perhaps you could check this out? Many thanks.
Hi Sue,
The list of posts on the Loch Garden ospreys group homepage is only the most recent, but if you click on the forum button you'll see that posts all the way back to last July are listed.
Thank you - I hadn't appreciated there was a difference between the LGO homepage and the forum - I will publicise the change. Sue
Perhaps it is worth pointing out that there is a forums button and a forum button. It is the latter one uses to access the pages back to the beginning of this new system which came in in July 2009.
