After being away since about 3.30 pm yesterday the forum is back. It seems to have come back at about 1.30 am today.

Email addresses as nicknames

Is there anyway you could put a note on the register page advising people not to use their email addresses as their nicknames to stop them advertising it to any spammers.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I can't find it if it has.

Is there any way our photos can be hidden from public and 3rd party searches, such as on Google?

Like many of us on the forum, I use Flickr to display my photos, and am careful to ensure my photos cannot be downloaded easily by members of the general public, and that they do not show up in public search engines such as Google. What is the point in my doing that when any photos I post to the forum show up very easily in Google Images, with an "open in new window" link that takes you to the thread on which they were posted, and from there can be downloaded by any Tom, Dick or Harriet.

Surely if Flickr has the facility to stop images showing in Google Images etc. then the RSPB could do the same?

I know my photos are nowhere near good enough for people to steal to make money from, but it is a matter of principle that they should be protected.

Doesn't the forum need better organisation?

As and RSPB forum the emphasis is going to be on birds but how about splitting "Wildlife" to sub-fora of, for example, Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Artropods (with further subdivisions), Plants etc?

RSPB Giftcards

Have an RSPB giftcard, it says it can be used online but on the giftcard registration bit of the website it says it can't be used online! Will the gift cards be useable online soon because its a 120 round trip to the nearest RSPB shop to me?!?!

I enjoy reading the various blogs but find it annoying that there is no direct link from each blog to the RSPB sites they relate to. In order to find out where the site is located I have to do a Google search.

Good morning 
I wonder if you can help. I am running chrome on windows 7, but for the past couple of days I haven't been able to get a live feed from the ospreys.

 A pop up tells me I need to install a "plug in" I have done this but no joy. I have then uninstalled the pop up and re-installed it,still no joy.

 Last week it was working fine. I have tried the other live feeds, only the kestrel feed at Arne doesn't offer the pop up, but a test card, after I press play.

 Am I alone in this fault. HELP.

Mods : UPDATE Status/Activity?

It's probably just me ....... but i kinda liked it when there was the status/activity on the bottom of the home page. I feel a bit lonely on here now, like as if I'm talking to myself. Before, I felt like I was in a group, like joining in so to say, now I don't, even though I know i am (yes I know, I confuse my self too lol )

It would've been nice, to be able to, say, just click on a link or something, that would take us to everybodys status, but i don't suppose that's possible. Anyways , I don't want to open a can of worms, with everyone arguing and getting irate, I'm just saying, that's all. Thanks, I'll shut up now.

A question for all forum users about the home page

Just recently we have been contacted by a few members of the forum who have been having issues with the home page and we have also noted a few threads and comments on the same topic. The main concerns are that interesting topics may get buried and questions may go unanswered. As we cannot make any technical changes to the forum, we wanted to run a suggestion by you to see what you think about an idea that may help to improve things.

On the home page you will notice that we can make certain threads sticky. What we are proposing is that the moderators during their daily patrols around the forums select interesting threads from around the site and make them sticky for a day to allow ease of viewing. We would welcome your feedback on this idea.

Simple request really as they contribute massive number of comments all coming onto main forum and if we were interested in them we would join that group.Those of us who go through the main forum picking out what we want to look at find them in ever increasing numbers.Heaven forbid when they nest and we get loads of comments "a fish arrived two minutes ago".

Photography Forum - To the Mods

I use the Photography Forum to browse through to find some of the excellent tips and advice on photographic issues, but find it is becoming clogged up with posts that should not be there. I wonder if it is possible to move some of these to more appropriate forums?

The Photography forum is intended for discussions on photographic issues only, and it seems some new members don't realise this and are posting their own photos that might be better in All Creatures or Garden Visitors or similar.

I'm getting more e-mails than I can cope with even though I unsubscribe from most of the threads where I have commented.

I noticed on one e-mail from the Mods after a thread had been moved that I can unsubscribe from all e-mails by navigating to the Settings tab , Site Options.

I've looked everywhere and can't find that tab. Help please.

To disable all email notifications from The RSPB Community, navigate to "Settings", click on the "Site Options" tab, then under the "Email Configuration" section, set "Send Notifications" to "No".

Website Navigation or is it more exciting to go down a blind alley?

Please get a professional with a logical mind who knows nothing about birds to help improve the navigation around this website.

I've come to this site through the recent Big Garden Watch and somehow got to read some forum posts on it. The forum seems to be a very active part of this site.

However when I look at the homepage and search all the dropdown menus there is no mention of Forum or Group - Where are they? What are the groups? Is there a list of what groups I can read?

Aah but here at the bottom it says Blog but blog is not what I understand to be forum.

The homepage drop down menus are huge - a homepage should be a brief logical window into whats on a site and where it is so that you have a mental picture of how to get around.

Blog/Forum/Community/Group/Chat/Post/New Post/New Thread/Reply/Tag - they're all good meaningful words but put or omit them at the wrong place in an inappropriate quantity and sprinkle in badly named tabs and it turns into a recipe for frustrating confusion.

This site has some great content and it looks good - if only those bits were assembled in a less chaotic way it would be a rewarding place to visit.

I have the biased view of a newcomer and no doubt regular users will have a different tale.

Forums - Can't Find Them

Hi - I just wanted to feedback that I really, really struggle to find the forums when I login the the RSPB website. I only find it by accident each time. I wonder if that is why there are so few people who login to the forums. There are only 8 people logged in right now and normally around 10-20 in the evening. That seems really low for the number of people that must use this website.

If there was a link from the home page that would really help access.

Membership Type?

people in the group and there is a heading ‘Membership Type’. Some people are listed as Members and some as
Owners. Does anyone know what the

We all have a Gallery tab on our profile page and most of us put photos in there but when it comes to anyone wanting to view my gallery no-one can see it..Is there any way we can make them public (or have the option to make them public).

I don't put anything in there that is private..

Don't know what everybody else thinks.

Hello everyone, it's hawky! You're probably all tired of me flitting around the site, posting everywhere and nagging you for advice, but hear me out! :P

My first impressions of the site: confusing! I couldn't find the forums for my first few visits as they were hidden behind the blogs. When I did, however, I found a very warm and welcoming community. Everyone is very friendly and offer advice all the time, which is great for a youngen' like me. I have been directed to the best food and feeders, shared previous encounters and even had a go at identifying a bird. Its very easy to settle in here, and I thank everyone who has welcomed me! (especially Doggie, who has basically become a mentor for me! :P)

I actually found the community by accident - I didnt know it existed until I followed a link through to a blog about ospreys here. Its quite hard to find on the RSPB homepage, which I'm not too sure is to keep the community manageable or simply a space issue. Regardless, im glad I found it.

Now onto the grumbly bits - what a confusing layout! I couldnt find the wildlife section as I kept mistaking 'chat' for the forums, but I soon learned the differences. I think a personal blog page would be really good, as you could talk about what you have seen on your day or visit, and also raise issues that might not fit into forums. This may have been mentioned before - if so, ignore!

Also, perhaps a dropdown menu from the top tabs? (e.g 'Chat' and it drops down all the forums in that section, e.g 'The Tea Rooms')

I was going to suggest more groups, such as fans of a specific type of bird - e.g 'Birds of Prey', or even more specific such as Hawks and Falcons, but this may require too much maintenance (unless there were elected leaders/owners of the group?)

Apart from these tiny gripes, the community itself is great and I look forward to future conversations with my newfound friends!

Speed of Site

Whatever you've done to the speed of the forums, I APPROVE! I can finally browse the forums on 3G using my phone and also on my work connection (whereas previously it just wouldn't load or took about two minutes per page!)
