Shy-type albatross between the warps!
Leo Tamini
I recently returned from a routine Albatross Task Force at-sea trip onboard a conventional wet fish trawl vessel in Argentina (fish are stored on ice, but not frozen like on the larger freezer vessels). The trip lasted a total of 16 days and fishing was concentrated around 300 km east of the Valdéz...

Volvo Ocean Race Stop Over in Cape Town
Bronwyn Maree
The Volvo Ocean Race has worked closely with the Save the Albatross Campaign since 2005, helping to increase awareness around the global plight of albatrosses. The Save the Albatross Campaign was initiated to inform and demonstrate to fishermen how to prevent incidental mortality of these endangered...

Photo: Grahame Madge (rspb-images.com) Black browed albatrosses (like those above) are stunning birds. A pure white head with a black eye line that any 60's model would have been proud of, and an impressive wingspan of up to 2.5m (around 8 feet in old money). Like other albatrosses they mature...

A helping hand in Ushuaia: New tori lines for the longline fleet
Nahuel Chavez
Last week, the ATF in Argentina sent a package to Ushuaia, where the fishing vessel Antartic III from fishing company Estremar S.A. was waiting. In the package were two sets of specially designed tori lines that resulted from ATF tests aboard the vessel this year. The use of tori lines is now obligatory...

Experiments aboard commercial longline vessels in Uruguay
Martin Abreu
In my most recent trip to sea, we set off for a period of eleven days from the port of La Paloma, located on the east coast of Uruguay. We had already partaken in various trips on this vessel, and so the crew already knew us well and they were happy to collaborate with our work again. We now have a much...

A life history that deserves respect
Sebastián Jiménez
Without doubt, the albatross are one of the groups of seabirds that need our greatest conservation effort. Commercial fisheries, through incidental capture, have generated a huge impact in many populations and almost all the species are currently in danger of extinction. As they spend the main part of...

Re: Save your stamps

Hi Lolly Thanks for the timely reminder, with all the Christmas cards flying back and forth it's a great time to do your bit for a great conservation project and all it takes is to save the stamps off envelopes that would go straight into the recycling! What could be simpler! If you want to...

An important step forward for seabirds in Chile!
Luis Cabezas
There has been a distinct contrast in the background scenery to the work we have been conducting in Chile recently. Personally, I have been just as busy working at-sea on fishing vessels as I have generating awareness of our work through an ornithology congress and public talks. The first of these...

A burden or a blessing?

What a beautiful day! We've been making the most of the autumn sunshine, kayaking along the creeks that run through the salt marshes of the glorious north Norfolk coast. It's like a secret world, with chattering mallards, little egrets stalking their supper, curlews calling and flocks of starlings...

320,000 reasons to support our campaign

Fabiano Peppes (rspb-images.com) It is well established that seabirds die each year by being caught up in fishing lines, at rates that are pushing some species of albatross, petrels and shearwaters to the very edge of extinction. Orea Anderson, our Global Seabird Programme Policy Officer, will today...

Re: Albatross or gull
Lady Kakapo
I would deffo say a gull, it's incredibly unlikely to be an albatross. I live in cornwall and still get surprised by the size of the gulls we get. Infact once I was almost convinced that an enormous gull was an albatross! I knew it couldn't have been really but then went on and that night...

Can anyone remind me of the details of this environmental film?
Matt
Hello all. This is a long-shot, but I wonder if anyone can help me track down a powerful television film I saw several years ago. The film, a full-length (1 hour) TV film, possibly for the BBC's Natural World though I can't be sure of that, was by an artist who had considered and presented...

Re: Silly Question
LRB
I think that's a perfectly reasonable question........birds certainly get tired - think of exhausted homing pigeons or the occasional blown-off course seabirds that get washed up around the coast - But, they have evolved perfectly for flight and with that comes a higher metabolism and a higher red...
