The cold weather bites.......
Kieren
I doubt anyone will have failed to notice the cold temperatures in England over the last week. This has had a huge impact on wildlife locally, nationally and internationally. One of the most dramatic impacts of the weather around the estuary has been the total freezing of most of the other reserves...

A winter wonderland
Ian Barthorpe
The weekend snow has left Minsmere looking even more picturesque than ever. The snow is criss-crossed by the trails of rabbits, muntjacs, red deer, foxes, pheasants, moorhens and a variety of smaller birds. There is a clear patch around each low bush, especailly gorse, where the rabbits have been busy...

Grub's up by the pond
Rhian Davies
Our new water bird feeding area, for Grub's up season, is proving a success with the swans, ducks, coots and moorhens. As these are wild birds they can be a little bit cautious, so my top tip is to scatter the grain and relax on the nearby bench and wait for the birds, like this curious coot,...

Pintails on film
Ben Calvert
Hi everyone, Couldn't resist blogging Helen's brilliant video of a pair of pintails at Saltholme that she shared with us on the facebook page . They're the most elegant duck that we get at Saltholme, well I think they are anyway. Have you seen one? Bye for now, Ben.

Stars and Stripes

Hi, December produced some great birds at Saltholme for example, the record breaking Marsh Harrier , Short-Eared Owls and Eurasian and Greenland White-Fronted Geese . With December over with I thought I would write a blog looking into the future, not too far, January 2012. As a bit of fun I am going...

Feeding frenzy
Rhian Davies
With the plunging temperatures, the lakes and pools of Saltholme are beginning to freeze over. As with the smaller birds, we like to provide food at this time of year . Each morning, grain is scattered around the waters edge, for the ducks and geese to enjoy. As you can see, after the cold night...

Happy Christmas
Ian Barthorpe
As another year slowly draws to a close, it's time for my final sightings update of the year. The main news is not much change over the last few weeks. That;s not to say that it's quiet. Far from it. Just that as is usual in mid winter, most of the birds are staying put. An exception was...

Team shoveler
Adam Jones
Hello, Last week I saw a group of birds at Saltholme doing something which I have never seen before. The birds involved were Shoveler ducks . There have been at least 60 of them on the pool at Haverton recently and it was here that I observed a large group packed tightly together, spiralling round...

What a transformation!
Ian Barthorpe
Although I've been involved in the exciting EU LIFE+ project on Orford Ness NT and RSPB Havergate since the funding was confirmed, I had not had the chance to see how work progressing until this month. Last week, I visited the 'Ness for a project meeting, braving strong winds on the short...

clearing Island for birds
arobb1
Hi, i have an island (30ft diameter) in a lake and it is overgrown with dense vegetation and 8metre trees. I was thinking of clearing it to allow a safe sanctuary for birds and to try and encourage more birds into the lake. Any advice on this or if it is worth trying? Thanks.

Help identifying a duck
JJ01
Hi, There are a pair of very strange ducks that I always see on the Thames near my home. I often come across other people puzzling over them too. These ducks always go around as a pair, suggesting that they are not a weird hybrid (as the chances of there being two who go around together are greatly...

hello yesterday evening we noticed that a duck was sitting in the window box on the ledge of our building. we live on the second floor, so we are worried that as she seems to sitting on eggs, this is too high up for her to be nesting. we were just wondering if this duck is actually much cleverer...

Duck nesting in my London high rise apartment balcony???

Hi, Please can I ask for some advice? I have just moved into a new apartment in Central London SE1. I am on the 6th floor and have a terrace area with big planters around it. After looking through them I have found a duck nesting in one. I can really see no way of them getting to ground safely as so...

Re: Feeding Wild Ducks
Richard J
Hi Naturelover, it is common for ponds to become overpopulated with mallards where they are being fed. You could try gradually reducing the food until eventually there is no corn for them. This should allow the ducks time to find alternatives rather than withdrawing it instantly. Provided they can all...
