Tales from the Riverbank - poor Ratty.
Chris
Last Friday I dusted down the video equipment which we'd been using to record the recent footage of otters. In fading light just before close of play, satisfied that the kit was ready for action after the festive season shut-down, Nick and I re-installed it on one of the channels in the middle of...

A new challenge for the ATF in Chile
Luis Cabezas
By contrast to the well-studied trawl fisheries, the level of interaction between seabirds and purse-seine fleets remains to be unknown. This type of fishery in Chile uses nets with a small mesh size and targets pelagic fish species at the surface of the water. The nets are set in a circle, forming the...

Captain, there’s a bird in my bunk!
Nahuel Chavez
Two weeks ago, when the vessel was fishing close to the Isla de los Estados , something strange happened. After having observed the morning haul, I went back to my cabin for a wash before lunch and was startled to find a bird that we are not used to seeing way out on the open ocean. It had neither...

Fisherman's tales - it must have been THIS big!!
Nick Quintrell
As part of our management of Radipole and Lodmoor we monitor fish populations to provide us with biomass estimates and a picture of what species are present and where. We do this by a process called electric (or electro) fishing which uses state of the art equipment to send a pulse of electricity between...

Heron Dancing on Ice
Tina
I waited ages to get an action shot of this poor heron as he stood motionless on this frozen pond at Harefield Middlesex in December. Then suddenly this happened as he attempted to catch a fish through the ice!

Heron snack time
GZA1970
I watched this heron fishing in Richmond Park. I noticed that each time he caught a fish, he would flip it into the air and right down his throat. So I waited for him to do this and then held the shutter down hoping I'd catch the moment!

Getting to grips with the coastal fleet
Nahuel Chavez
At this time of year in the southern hemisphere you can enjoy a stroll along the harbour and, in the evening, watch the vessels gently roll in with their ice boxes full of fish as they arrive to the bustling activity of the port. Over the last week I’ve been dedicating my work to this peasant...

Working from Richard's Bay

Hello Albatross supporters! A lot has happened since my last diary entry. As I mentioned in some of my previous entries the highest priority of the South African longline team for 2010 is to determine the effect using extra weight on fishing gear has on the catch rate of tuna and swordfish. We hope...

Re: Fishing
seymouraves
Hi, it used to be a joke that fishermen went fishing to get away from their wives, and I remember them yelling at noisy kids who would 'scare the fish away'. Then I noticed them sitting under huge umbrellas with radios playing. So I'm baffled. As a teenager I used to get yelled at when...

We had an osprey fishing on the Aird Meadow yesterday afternoon, and then today one was seen fishing on the Barr Loch. Both flew off in different directions (one towards Kilbirnie and one towards Barcraigs Reservoir). Let us know if you see any more! Paula

It's a great pleasure for me to tell you what is going on in Namibia at the moment, especially on the side of the longline fleet. Since February 2009 I have been organising a trip with one of the hake longline vessels so that we can get a better idea of the contact this fleet has with seabirds. I...
