  • Blog post: Ian's winter birds

Pauline Wilson, RSPB Local Group Secretary, writes: "Hi Everybody. I received an email from Ian Cunningham and thought it particularly interesting as his photographs show the birds in winter plumage which is quite different from our usual views of these species. A lovely seal certainly has the...

  • Blog post: A summary of July on the reserve.

This is summary of July's birds on the reserve from our resident expert Ken Croft... "The thriving sea-bird colony gave visitors a spectacular display this month with Puffin, Guillemot, Razorbill, Fulmar, Kittiwake, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Great Black-backed Gull all frantically...
  • Blog post: These boots were made for... helping kittiwake chicks!

We've had fantastic weather up at the Mull all week, and Rob and I made the most of it on Thursday by making a full count of our seabirds. At the moment, the best place to see the birds is just off the reserve along the cliff path from the cafe. Here, the birds are very close, and with a pair of...
  • Blog post: The View from the Bottom.

After a short break in the East Midlands, I was welcomed back to the island with a boat trip around our dramatic coast. It was a truly wonderful way to view the reserve. Setting off from Trearddur Bay on a rigid-hulled inflatable, our tour rook in the sights of the eastlerly part of the reserve (the...
  • Blog post: Puffling!

Today we had our first close-ups of an emerging baby Puffin, termed a Puffling. It was great to see him/her after all the waiting. It's parents were close at hand preening in the sunshine earlier today. If you want to see these little ones you'll have to come and visit soon as we expect them...

Bore da! The stunning weather we've had recently may not have escaped your notice and here at South Stack we've been celebrating with our Puffin Fun weekend! • Blog post: Auk counts...

Our assistant warden, Denise, has been busy over the past few weeks counting our auk colony. I thought you would be pleased to know the outcome! Including the lighthouse island (which is not technically part of the reserve) we have had a 23% increase in Guillemot numbers, a whopping 8014! The Razorbills...
  • Blog post: It's time to leave home, kids!

When baby birds leave the nest, they are called fledglings. A fledgling is the equivalent of a teenager. They are too big and gangly to stay at home, they’re keen to see the world and their parents are fed up with constantly feeding them. But how do you leave home when you hatched out on a cliff...

  • Forum post: Wildlife on Skomer (apart from puffins!)

We saw some great birds on our trip to Skomer. In fact it started well before we had even left the mainland as there were swallows nesting in the public toilets at St Martins which is the small cove where you get the boat. Anywhere else you would be in danger of being arrested for hanging about by public...

Having only ever seen one solitary puffin from far away, we went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands this summer - amazing!! You couldn't move for puffins - there were hundreds, along with many terns, shags and guillemots. What a spectacle!
