Signs of spring
Adam Jones
Hi, It has been unseasonably mild at times this week and as a result Saltholme’s wildlife sprung into spring-like action. Whilst walking around the reserve I’ve heard a song thrush, robins and wrens singing. Mute swans have been vigorously defending territories at Haverton Hole and I’ve...

Wildlife in your living room
Sarah Newton
If you enjoyed getting outside and seeing the wildlife in your WildSquare why not bring some wildlife spotting into your home too? Not real wildlife of course, most birds, insects and animals would much rather be outside than running around your living room and your parents probably wouldn’t appreciate...

Hi there The weather is so much nicer at the moment. The sun is shining and it is 10 degrees I was feeding the birds today as usual and I could see a lot of Ladybirds sitting on the leaves of a nearby bush Is it not too early for Ladybirds to make an appearance at the moment? I hope that...

The holly and the ivy ...

Hi everyone, Another, very seasonal update from the wildlife garden thanks to intrepid volunteer, Peter: The holly and the ivy... but ours are not full grown. The wildlife garden is only a couple of years old but we do have them and they will liven up the garden in winters to come. Both of these...

Hello Jools, these might be harlequin ladybirds as they often hibernate in houses, sometimes in the thousands. They are a non-native species which has spread very quickly through the UK. Where they all the same colour and pattern? Richard

Hi Blackbird, Your photo's are really good! You should send them to the UK Ladybird Survey website, and also inform them of your sightings (there's a short form to complete online). Their website address is: http://www.ladybird-survey.org/default.aspx Please have a look at it, as you...

Hi there Had another photo opportunity in the back garden with this little one. It was a right little mover and scuttled about in all directions as the pictures show. It opened and shut its wings. The last picture was of a different Lady in the front garden area. I do not know...

Ladybird Thread

Hi there I thought it would be nice to open up a Ladybird Thread including Harlequins too. There seems to be a lot of them about at the moment and it will give us all a chance to show our photos so we can identify the species. So here are my offerings, and please could someone mention if you...

Ladybird ball

I captured a group of ladybirds last autumn and now spring is here they have reawakened. The setting is not as picturesque, a decking post rather than foliage, but the grouping is interesting none the less.

Fun in the sun

The nice weather over the weekend brought out the visitors, but it also brought out the wildlife. Numerous kites and buzzards were flying high, enjoying the thermals. You can also tell it is nesting time as the kites are swooping down into the sheep field next to us to snatch up bits of wool. They will...

A loveliness of ladybirds
Kilburnlad
I was clearing back some dying flowers in October 2009 and something red caught my eye just before I was about to cut some stems. Careful closer inspection revealed this group of ladybirds. Obviously the stems were left uncut. Internet research indicated that the group noun for ladybirds is a 'loveliness'...
