Last of the Year - have a great Hogmanay
Paula Baker
So, we haven't quite made the 120 species we were looking for, we did get one more though to make us up to 118 in total (woodcock was the 118 species.) But, I still think 118 is a good number for this year and hope we can do even better in 2012! We have had some excellent additions thanks to our...

117 down, 3 to go!
Paula Baker
It will come as no surprise to most that birdwatchers like to keep lists. I myself am not a list keeper (not for birds anyway, perhaps for moths...) but can see why many find list keeping so enjoyable. Earlier in the year, RSPB Lochwinnoch started it's on list, looking back through the records for...

Stunners and first-oners
Paula Baker
Wildlife sightings at the reserve have continued to go from strength to strength over the past two weeks, with amazing otter sightings, once in 24 year sightings and the arrival of some of our first autumn and winter migrants. Firstly, our autumn migrant species have started to arrive/pass through...

Paula Baker
A big thank you goes to all entrants to this years photography competition, all 167 of them (!) and an even bigger thank you goes to the hundred of visitors that chose their favourites throughout August. But there can only be one winner (well, one in each category) and here they are: Birds category...

Weather obsession & update
Paula Baker
I can't help but notice that I reference the weather in almost every blog I post. I know it is very British of me to be obsessed with the weather, but I do find it has an impact on much of what we do and think! I just looked out of the window, wondering what to blog about, and could only think 'oh...

Bad news but good shall come
Paula Baker
Unfortunately our Wilson Hide was burnt down on the 1st of July and we have arrived this morning to a smoldering wreck of what was once one of our best loved view points. Both the police and fire brigade attended the scene last night be we don't know any more information about what might have happened...

Recent goings on...

Hi all, The reserve has indeed been a busy place over the past week, with lots of young birds now leaving their nests into the big wide world, including our own great tit family that visitors have enjoyed watching on the webcam . We've had lots of warblers about including sedge, garden, blackcap...

Duckling Dilemma
Paula Baker
So, the story of the massive family of ducklings deepens... First we had 14 ducklings and one female bird at the feeders, when they were little more than a couple of days old. The next day was when we first witnessed our giant family, with 27 ducklings, all of whom looked the same age (so hard to...

Kingfishers in Lochwinnoch
Blaney
Does anyone know if there are still Kingfishers in Lochwinnoch? I used to see them quite frequently around 20 years ago flying up and down parts of the river Calder when I sat fishing. But unfortunately I have not seen one since. I think they have all turned into Dippers. Maybe its me, who no longer...

Re: Ospreywatch

We had an osprey fishing on the Aird Meadow yesterday afternoon, and then today one was seen fishing on the Barr Loch. Both flew off in different directions (one towards Kilbirnie and one towards Barcraigs Reservoir). Let us know if you see any more! Paula
