Ray's Rambles: Death in the night
Nicola Swann
The first thing I do every morning when I arrive at Titchwell is to check the gents toilet walls for insects and spiders. (Luckily not many people have witnessed this odd behaviour!) Apart from the potential for losing friends, it has netted me several species on my wildlife list, the latest two being...

A different type of feather?

I was walking through the office this morning when something bright caught my eye. A moth, on the carpet, near the door. I just managed to stop a colleague standing on it before it flew to the window and allowed me to take this photo . Now, I'm no moth expert, and our number one moth man is on annual...

Ray's Rambles: Sprawlers, Streakers and Dead Men's Fingers
Nicola Swann
The exceptionally mild weather has encouraged me to spend more time than usual on the reserve during the last fortnight. It also tempted a young lady to completely strip off and go skinny-dipping, but she wasn't the streaker in my title. My streak , and the sprawler , were two of the six new moths...

Ray's Rambles: The Four Seasons

What an extraordinary fortnight. With temperatures ranging from 12c to 29c, no wonder our wildlife has been confused! Four new species have found their way onto my list, which now stands at 909. Three were moths: pink-barred sallow , black rustic and satellite; and one was a plant - wild marjoram . The...

Ray's Rambles: It's not what you know
Nicola Swann
I've managed to see six new species in the last fortnight (total now 905) but only one of them was my own work. I found a tiny red velvet mite crawling about on one of the windows in the Fen Hide but the brown-spot pinion and garden rose tortrix moths were entirely down to the young ladies doing...

Unicorns, eruptions and Siberian arrivals

This morning I just didn’t know what to expect. My first job was to open a sluice and let a little flush of water into the fresh marsh. The wind was pushing what little water there was up to the eastern end of the lagoon, concentrating birds at the furthest point from viewing. The little ‘flush’...

From 4pm on Saturday 6 th August to 4pm on Sunday 7 th August 2011 we had a BioBlitz at RSPB Ynys-hir. It was an exciting 24 hours of events looking for birds, mammals, fungi, moths, insects, plants and...

Thanks for the extra info' WW, now that really does confuse things, brilliant!!! I would definitely forward onto the respective moth recorder, link here with a list, as if it is a copper underwing species then the books/UKmoths website say it shouldn't be that far north. However, a quick Google...

Rare Moth

I have just read that a rare Silurian Moth has been spotted and recorded in Brecon National Park. It seems that the moth hasn't been seen for 35 years and was thought to extinct. The report can be read here at BBC Mid Wales. http://tinyurl.com/3d3jxx7 Regards Mark
