THE BIGGER THEY ARE............By BW
Birdie Wild
The bigger they are............ By Birdie Wild The Wagtails gathered on the edge of town (something real bad was gonna go down) The noise was immense, then silence fell, as Big Dave stood up and rang a bell. Placing 'is wing on 'is heart in a pledge, he vowed "We'll...

Joel gets his osprey
Mark Ward
You may have read in a previous post about my sighting of an osprey here at The Lodge and the fact that Joel was away and missed out on a bird he really wanted to see for the first time ever. Well, said osprey stayed for more than a month and has become, I believe, the latest ever osprey seen in the...

'Behind the scenes' here at Birds magazine involves me having a great job and the opportunity to work on a nature reserve: The Lodge , Sandy, Bedfordshire - that famous address of the Headquarters of the RSPB. It also brings the chance to enjoy lunchtime walks surrounded by nature and the...

Ray Mears is on ITV/STV tonight, but for those who missed the Caledonian Forest/LG area/Osprey/Capercaille/etc Episode 1 from last week , which I had given up any chance of seeing, it is now available on ITV Player and STV Player as below. Ray is seen chatting with Roy last Spring at a secret nest in...

Dyfi Osprey Project website -Tracking Einion, Dulas and Leri
IanH
Hi all, not sure if this has been mentioned on here or not but I was just reading one of the chicks from the Dyfi migration diaries and its seems that Einion has had a bit of an adventure at sea! Thankfully after 29 hours on the wing he made it back to land not far from where he started! You can follow...

Wow, thanks everyone for your comment so far, if you are still deliberating then take your time, it's a tough ask! I've finally narrowed it down to 5 so here goes! Swift - Guaranteed to get me gazing skywards every May on the look out for the first ones back! Kestrel - Especially...

Osprey over marsh
Alex
Wow today I have seen my first osprey over the reserve. It disturbed a group of about twenty curlews and plenty of lapwings, as it came across the reserve heading inland towards Churchtown and beyond. Did anyone see it over at Martin Mere? Pink feet numbers have dramatically increased from the eight...

Migration mysteries...

This time of year sees lots of migrants both leaving and arriving at Leighton Moss so why not come and join us for a Wednesday walkabout and find out about the amazing travels of our birds at this time of year. On yesterday's walk we spotted a couple of common terns divebombing into the pool in...

London buses
Ian Barthorpe
Just like the proverbial London bus, good birds often come along together. Earlier today, one of our volunteers reported six spoonbills flying over the reedbed towards Island Mere. Seconds later, the radios crackled into life again as Paul spotted an osprey heading in the same direction. Now, osprey...

A return to summer....

Today's gorgeous weather has more than made up for yesterday's miserable showing and brought some good sightings today too. The black tern that was here yesterday is still around; it seems to be going backwards and forwards between the Eric Morecambe pools and the Lower and Public hides. The...

Otters and 'Notters'
Hannah
My plan to catch the otters early this morning completely backfired - having got up early and charged down to the Lower hide, the otters were seen there about 20 minutes after I had left. We had one dog otter with a kink in its tail at 8.15 am and a group of four at 8.45 am. At 10 am an osprey was...

Rutland Water, 4 RSPB reserves and Wicken Fen in one week

Blimey, I don’t even believe it myself, and I was there! I’m the one who isn’t keen on reserves on the whole, and my hubby, as many of you know, is not interested in birds. Add to that our two dogs who come everywhere with us, you may understand how this is an all time record for me...

Sorry to interrupt folks. Sue contacted me as a result of a shot of an Osprey that I had taken last week in the Gironde Estuary. Early evening, we were driving across the Cromarty Bridge and spotted an Osprey sitting on the railing, not 6ft from the car. We slowed down to watch him, drove up and down a few times and Loran managed to snap him with her camera phone. Awesome!!!

After several days and many shots I managed to get this one of an osprey flying over the caravan site we were on for a week in Aberdeenshire. It felt good to get a decent photo as I thought I had missed the opportunity yet again.

In 2005 I volunteered for Operation Osprey. My first morning at the hide, I saw the female osprey circling the nest tree lower, and lower... Suddenly she dived... A moment later a red deer ran out from the bracken, evicted by a susicious bird!

This year my wife and I were enjoying the evening sunshine and were lucky enough to see a juvenile Osprey make it's first flight from a nest near to our house. Words are insufficient to thank the RSPB for all you have done in protecting these birds.

Our first sighting of an osprey was at Loch Ruthven. It circled the lake a couple of times, hovered briefly then plunged feet first into the water. We held our breath. Had it caught a fish? Time seemed to stand still. Unlucky this time, off he went
