After a short break in the East Midlands, I was welcomed back to the island with a boat trip around our dramatic coast. It was a truly wonderful way to view the reserve. • Forum post: Re: Not many Puffins remaiming at Bempton

Though not in the Farne Islands league Bempton Cliffs can yield pretty good photo opportunities. Here's one of mine from years before digital photography reached the twinkle in the eye stage. It was an icy cold spring morning and I had to rise at stupid o'clock to get it. The rising sun gave...
  • Forum post: Puffins Galore - My Return Trip's To The Farnes

Hi All, a few months back there was numerous threads about where the best places to see Puffins and other Sea Bird colonies are in the UK! I remember discussing with certain members about my experiences at the Farne Islands over the years. I recall stating that I must return as it had been several...

  • Forum post: Wildlife on Skomer (apart from puffins!)

We saw some great birds on our trip to Skomer. In fact it started well before we had even left the mainland as there were swallows nesting in the public toilets at St Martins which is the small cove where you get the boat. Anywhere else you would be in danger of being arrested for hanging about by public...
  • Forum post: Puffins on Skomer Island (with a few more pics added)

Hello, I'm back from a holiday in South Pembrokeshire which included my long awaited trip to Skomer Island to see puffins and it was well worth the wait. My moment of magic There are so many moments; should I tell of the few minutes that a buzzard and I looked at each other from about 5 feet apart (due to the path being higher on the hill than the tree); or of suddenly hearing choughs high above me on Islay alerting me to their fantastic aerobatics above...
  • Photo: 2292

Rather grumpy with each other, with a couple of hours to kill, we spotted "reserve" on the road map and ended up at Bempton which we had never heard of! 10 minutes later my husband saw his first puffin and the rest of the day we were all smiles.
  • Photo: 2246

Having only ever seen one solitary puffin from far away, we went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands this summer - amazing!! You couldn't move for puffins - there were hundreds, along with many terns, shags and guillemots. What a spectacle!
