Birdsfoot

This is a tiny flower found in grassy areas at Minsmere. It is easily overlooked. It's a member of the pea family, as can be seen from both the flower shape and the seedhead. This photo was taken on Sunday afternoon in the North Bushes using a Fuji Finepix S1600 on supermacro.

Bearing gifts of random kindness

I reckon I could power the national grid if Icould capture the energy from my constant shivering. Still. I can always turn-up the heating, chuck another log on the fire or pull on another of my Mum's knitted jumpers. Blue tits , sparrows , starlings (pictured) and robins don't share that luxury...

Icing on the cake

You may have noticed that it's unseasonably cold? This is the point where we traditionally urge everyone to put out extra food and fresh water for birds. I'm not one to break traditions so I'll urge you to do just that . I would also like to invite you to drink in the spectacle of winter...

Harapan - One million tree appeal and Sumatran tiger

When we, and our local partners, took over the management of Harapan Rainforest three years ago, we immediately started training a team of forest wardens to protect the forest from further illegal logging. Working with our partners - Birdlife International and Burung Indonesia - we also came up with...

Four easy steps towards climate heaven

We're careering towards Feed the Birds Day at an alarming rate. This haste seems to have been maintained throughout 2010 and frankly, I'm looking forward to the Christmas holidays, which are... just eleven weeks away (sound of alarm bells and cash-tills )! A partridge in a pear tree is possible...

Autumn's bounty - field maple seed

The winged seed, like the similar sycamore seed, spins like a helicoptor's rotor blades when it falls off the tree. Eastern hedgerow.

Re: Planting Seeds

Buzzards spot on there, but you may want to consider saving say 10% of your seed and growing it indoors in a tray just in case our fabulous weather does put the scuppers on the outdoor sown seeds. I've had some success with this in the past, using the indoor/greenhouse grown plants to fill gaps in...

Re: Greenfinches gone.
IanH
Many birds will have struggled through the harsh weather but it is unlikely to have wiped out all of the greenfinches. Finches can be quite mobile in winter and will often move from field to field and hedgerow to hedgerow in search of seed. It is most likely that they have shifted their forgaing route...

Starling Pondering

I wonder what he is thinking? A small flock of Starlings were in residence before I moved here; eating the bread and scraps my neighbours put out on a daily basis. However, the starlings now head for the high energy food and peanut feeders first.
