  • Forum post: Skylarks in January

I live in Guildford and have regularly heard and seen a skylark on the North Downs near my house. Do Skylarks overwinter in the UK?
  • Blog post: Out and about

Compared to some of the glorious winter weather we've experienced recently, today wasn't too inspirational, but the team took the opportunity to get out "in the field" anyway. A quick check first of the Elmley livestock: all the cattle have now gone until the spring, with only the sheep...
  • Blog post: I come from the land of the ice & snow...

Anticipation is mounting for the impending arrival of a benevolent elf from Lapland. But as far as I'm concerned, he's been beaten to the UK by a number of his fellow compatriots! RSPB are now managing a number of fields on the Harty Marshes at the east end of the Isle of Sheppey. We have acquired...
  • Blog post: I see light at the end of the tunnel. Hope it's not a train...

Fingers crossed, the Elmley/RSPB website saga could soon be rectified. It seems that the mobile phone connection we use for our computer system at Kingshill Farm has been routing requests to access the website to a different address & so the operation "times out" before the mistake is realised...
  • Forum post: bird populations for the last 10 years

Hi, I was wondering if there is any way of getting bird population numbers for the last 10 years for an assignment im doing, preferably barn owls, lapwings and maybe skylark? Thanks!
  • Blog post: A summary of July on the reserve.

This is summary of July's birds on the reserve from our resident expert Ken Croft... "The thriving sea-bird colony gave visitors a spectacular display this month with Puffin, Guillemot, Razorbill, Fulmar, Kittiwake, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull and Great Black-backed Gull all frantically...
  • Blog post: Rumours and speculation?

Yesterday I highlighted the threats to Pillar 2 of the Common Agricultural Policy. The rumours that Pillar 2 may be scrapped are continuing to circulate – you may have seen me on the BBC (about 22 mins in) yesterday talking about it. Some of the journalists we spoke to approached the EU Commission...
  • Forum post: Re: Can anyone tell me what these are please?

    They sound like Skylarks http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/s/skylark/index.aspx
  • Blog post: Stop Press! - The Battle for the Moss, 23rd May 2011

Scene One The day here at Campfield, as forecast by the weathermen, had developed into a full blown gale with estimated gusts of 60 - 70 mph. Gales we are accustomed to here on the Solway, but this was something special! We were hunkered down behind our picture window, gazing at the huge spectacle...
  • Blog post: Burgar Hill Hide Session

Join the RSPB Warden whatever the weather ........? When driving to the hide this morning and seeing (or not as the case was) the Rendall hills encased in low cloud, with a strong wind battering the side of the Landrover. I realised that I may not get a large turnout for the hide session or even be...
  • Forum post: Re: Is this a Meadow Pipit?

Hi Shane I'm sorry to hear you haven't been too well, but I hope that you are feeling better now. :-) Those are very good photos of a skylark as they aren't easy birds to capture photos of.
  • Blog post: Farming for birds

If you look beyond the reedbed and over to the far side of "IMF2" you will notice a big change in the landscape as over 8 hectares of land is being prepared to be planted with a barley crop. This area is too dry to be part of the wetland so we got our heads together and came up with a plan...
  • Blog post: Spring?

The last couple of days of wall-to-wall sunshine could almost convince you that spring has sprung, although I've been in North Kent long enough to know that winter can often have a sneaky sting in the tail. Whatever, Monday & Tuesday have been glorious - lapwing are displaying (one of our volunteers...
  • Forum post: Saltholme today

What a lovely day after all the recent snow! I was glad to get out after the best part of the week cooped up with a cold. Fresh air's a great decongestant! Wasn't sure what to expect either but I was certainly tempted by the thought of water rail. I have a memory from my distant youth (a Young...
  • Forum post: Re: Mystery birds. Post your pics here and we'll try to ID them for you.

Great pic. The combination of streaky brown plumage, stubby but pointed bill and the small crest all point to this being a skylark. The image is even good enough to see the long flat hindclaw of this species. If this bird flew, you would see the white outer tail and trailing edge to the wing which are...
  • Forum post: Re: Is it - Is it Not?

Hi, yes it's a skylark. Best pointers are the Primary projections on the wing tips- very long- they are non existant on a meadow pipit. Good straight hind claw as in most lark spp. Fine streaks down the flanks not dark blobs. The scapular feathers are quite pointed and the outer webs...

tried to show a couple of Skylark shots on this thread, but unable to do so,but if anyone cares to visit the Hodbarrow site you can see a couple of close ups, taken on Haverigg beach.
  • Forum post: Re: Nesting skylarks

I would recommend leaving the cutting for at least another month, by mid July many of the 'in field' nesting species such as skylarks will have completed their breeding seasons so cutting after that time is best practice. We have some useful tips on managing such meadows on our website here...

Mesmerised by a skylark, I wrote my first poem: Surprised... A soft sissilation of wings, Rising, Turn upon turn, wheel after wheel, arc after arc, A silvering ribbon of song, Strives for its vanishing point. And I disappear. This bird, This moment
  • Photo: 2381

Walking along a narrow path, t'wards grassy sand dunes and sparkling silver sea, my happy, sunny thoughts are echoed by the - stirring song of a skylark - a speck of black soaring in the bright-blue sky -so high above - uplifting, joyful, ecstatic
  • Photo: 2180

My music is the Skylark soaring high above and as I pause to wonder I think of God’s great Love, although I may not see its wings its song is true and clear and that is all the proof I need that he is ever near.

The Syrupy song of a skylark's offering trickles from the sky and my ears gratefully receive.
