Strange behaviour - can anyone help?
Richard Clapham
We've lived in our house for 9 years but for the first time, a couple of weeks ago, I saw some different bird behaviour. We have some french doors leading on to the garden and, as I was reading the paper, I heard some tapping on the window. Looking up I saw a blue tit sitting on the door handle then...

No more blackbirds??
Rosie
Heya I live in Chippenham and used to have loads of blackbirds visiting our garden, but we haven't seen any since around Spring, and even then we didn't see many young as we usually do. Is there anyway we can attract them again? We get some other birds like long tailed tits, blue tits, crows...

Re: Midwife Toads in Bedford
boatingbelle
Have just seen this reference to midwife toads. We have them in our garden!! We live in a small village about 8 miles from Bedford and 3 miles from Sandy. We heard the strange noises they make and did some research and concluded that is the only thing it could be. The Bedfordshire Natural History...

Sudden increase in dead birds
Icklepepper
I was just curious as to whether there is a reason behind the sudden increase in dead birds in my area. I live in Braintree, Essex and I walk my dogs for about 3hrs every day, I cover a large amount of the local area and over the last two years I had not seen one dead bird that I can remember now in...

Re: Moorhen In the Garden!
Parasaurolophus
Sounds great!. Strangely I noticed a moorhen across my local green wadeing in the snow but the weird thing is, is that the closest water source is over 2 miles away, how and why was it there??? I had never ever seen a moorhen here before or even anywhere near here. I think the snow is making...

Strangers in our midst

Here at the RSPB, we often get enquiries from puzzled 'garden watchers' who have seen an odd bird in their garden. 'It looks like a blackbird , but it's got a white head.' 'One of the starlings on my feeder is all white! Is it a different species?' Some people are a bit disappointed...

Bigging up the little guys
lucinda
Insects come in a variety of sizes and colours, but sadly, I can't say that I ever really pay that much attention to the little guys of our ecosystem, although I often see the evidence that they have been around - the intricate patterns left in leaves and bits of foliage missing as they happily chomp...

A woolly what?!

I meant to go for a long lunchtime walk round the reserve today, but got sidetracked by Mark and Kevin staring intently at one of the conifer trees in our formal garden. Covering nearly every needle on the tree were what looked like small, white cotton balls. I was totally fascinated, and spent my...

Entering another world
Katie Fuller
Today, Lucinda and I spent our lunchtime staring into a tree. We had intended to go for a walk around the reserve, but got no further than the 'formal' gardens. 'Formal' is a bit of a misnomer; although the layout of the gardens is what you'd expect at a large, country house, they're...
