Winter arrives
Mark Brandon
The reserve looks a lot different now then when I last posted a blog , as the winter weather finally arrived in force. We had over 6 inches of snow at the weekend and there is still a lot of laying snow that has frozen, making the paths very icy and slippery. We have put up signs advising against walking...

Big Garden Birdwatch
Mark Brandon
Did you take part in the RSPB's BIg Garden Birdwatch ove the weekend? Did you record the numbers of birds you would normally expect to see? This is a section of the press release that the RSPB issued,in response to the many people asking us where the garden birds have gone this year; Big Garden...

Is anybody there?

I'm not going to lie - the Birdwatch can be a worrying time. What biscuits will I have with my cup of tea? Can I sit in my favourite chair and still see the garden? Will the birds know I'm watching them and not turn up? Ok, so I'm being silly about the first two, but every year we get people...

Stunning sunsets
Mark Brandon
We have seen some stunning sunsets over the last week or two. I took these pictures from the drive opposite the shop last night. We should have a few more nights of these amazing skies, as the weather is staying cold and mainly bright, so bring your camera and come up and finish your walk at dusk to enjoy...

Spectacular seas
Island Girl
The New Year began where 2011 left off, wet and wild! Winds of over 70 mph screeched along the coast last night and late this evening it is still blowing a Force 10. It makes life quite difficult at times; simply putting one foot in front of the other can be a huge physical effort for humans and is...

Happy New Year
Mark Brandon
The reserve was exceptionally busy yesterday; bright blue skies and sunshine all the way, although it was blustery and colder than of late. Our bird sightings have been fairly consistent over the Christmas and New Year period. The large flock of around 500 Fieldfares are still feeding on the meadow on...

Impressive thrush flock
Mark Brandon
The number of birds in the mixed flock on Sandy Ridge meadow is building up nicely. I estimated over 500 fieldfares, 200 starlings, 150 redwings, 20 meadow pipits, several mistle thrush and a few goldfinches, all feeding in a large group on the grass this morning. Although it was fairly quiet on the...

Snow at last
Mark Brandon
It felt a bit more like Christmas today didn't it ? A good dusting of snow fell this morning, although most of it has disapeared now. I walked around to feed the birds and many of the feeders were completely empty, so the cold weather has attracted lots of birds to feed on them. A large flock of...

If ever there was a need for a blog it is now but no-one seems to be disposed to do it. 16 days since the last one, surely something interesting has happened since then!? I would suggest someone takes a photo out of the VC window each morning and just gives a weather forecast or a brief snapshot of interesting...

This is a Lowbow opposed to a Rainbow, this occurs like this as it was nearly midday and the angle of the sun doesn't create a full rainbow, really odd I thought.

Re: Big Garden Birdwatch Weather Forecast?

It certainly looks like being a cold weekend for much of the UK with some places in with a chance of freezing fog , not great bird watching conditions! Lets hope that clears away quickly and gives everyone a chance to see what is going on out in the garden!
