Aberdeen Red Kites

Red kites are returning to Aberdeen - your chance to get closer to these magnificent birds of prey. More...

Start of releases

You can always tell when things are busy with the kites as I usually forget to blog!

Over the last couple of weeks we've started to release birds which is always really satisfying.  Although I've seen nearly 70 young kite taste freedom for the first time I'm always a little nervous when the birds fly out of the cages.  So far they have all flown off strongly, so I don't think I've got anything to worry about.  Because of the wet weather we've delayed some of this week's releases, but I'm hoping that it'll stay dry and we can get a few more out before the end of the week.

The birds that have already been released are doing well and are staying around the cages mostly as they gradually find their wings.  Yesterday there were four birds swooping and soaring over nearby fields which was pretty amazing to watch as they were only released a week ago.

Have just caught up with all your blogs on the red kites. One of the good things of being off work ill!

we see the odd red kite near us, coming across from Rockingham Forest area and if we go to Rutland Water always seem to see them there now. Husband travels down the M40 most weeks so always gives me a count of how many he's seen in the Chilterns. Had a great day in Wales somwe years ago at a kite feeding station. To see so many magnificent birds swooping down for food was unforgettable.

Hi Jenny. Glad to see you've now got "comments" enabled :-) I got excited the other day as we crossed the Don bridge as I thought I saw a kite swooping over the river. Even hubby got a bit excited until we realised it was a blooming pigeon doing some fantastic wing work!!! What is the likelyhood of seeing them over in the B.O.D area? We often see Kestrels in the fields on the Parkway.

Paula

I am still learning on the blogs so bear with me!

We all fall victim to the pigeon trap so I sympathise completely.  We've had kites at Old Aberdeen and Blackburn so I wouldn't be surprised if one turned up around Bridge of Don soon.

Leicester Lass - hope you feeling better soon and you can check up on the kite's progress during your lunch break at work!  Some of the kites we have been releasing are from Rockingham.

Thank you for your reply Jenny. I work in Old Aberdeen (when I'm not off sick as I have been for much of this year) so this has excited me!
