Get stuck in a rut

It's a secret not many people know, but Minsmere is home to one of the largest red deer herds in the UK.

During October, the annual red deer rut gets underway as males go head-to-head and compete for the females' attention.

Announcing their presence with prehistoric, haunting bellows the stags posture and strut to assess their opponent and assert their authority. When two evenly matched stags meet, the excitement begins. If neither backs down, dramatic fights can follow with the stags aggressively locking antlers to settle the matter.

Visit us at our Minsmere nature reserve to enjoy one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles East Anglia has to offer.
