Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Stop Press...... Intruder is back

An unidentified osprey (sex unknown) has been around the nest since 7.55am this morning. It landed very briefly on the nest at 8.25 only to be chased off by OVS...... are we in for a repeat of yesterday?

We will keep you informed of developments.

Reply to John Harwood about size of nest "The nest is a large structure made of branches and twigs, lined with small twigs, moss, bark and grass. It takes both birds 14-21 days to complete a new nest, which at completion can be 120-150 cm across and 50-60 cm deep. As more material is added in later years, the nest can grow to a depth of 150-200 cm. " This nest is probably well over 1 a metre wide!

This is edge of your seat stuff! Just keeping everything crossed for EJ and OVS - its hard enough trying to incubate eggs without intruders to fight off too! All quiet at the nest at the moment - long may it continue!

I just happened to check the webcam at about 2320 my time last night and EJ was very agitated. In fact, she flew off, leaving the nest for about 10 minutes but staying very close and alarm calling from time to time. When she returned, she immediately settled down to incubate once more but she was still alert.

Round about midnight Fri night I was about to turn off my PC when I heard squawking from the nest, followed by wings beating. When I got the picture up the nest was unguarded, but one of the pair (couldn't tell which in the 'dark') came back about ten minutes later. Perhaps the intruder had visited?

Thanks Carol, it's really hard to comprehend how big the nest is and how big the birds are unless you see them in the flesh really. Has the intruder been back since 8:25 this morning?

How long can the ospreys be off the eggs before they lose them?

OVS just taken over duty at 16.45 - as he nestled down onto the eggs, he fell forward on to his chin! he looks as though he has the eggs under his chest almost as his bottom is sticking upwards - doing his fatherly duties and keeping the nest tidy too!

Just had a bit of a precarious change over! OVS was still on the eggs - with bottom in the air - EJ came back and was politely telling him to move as it was her turn - he had to push himself up with his beak and get off backwards as EJ was moving in - thought the eggs were going to get squashed - thankfully they managed the changeover without any damage - OVS now flown off.

At 16.35 OVS brought a fish and EJ left with it straight away. I'm really enjoying reading all the comments. The enthusiasm is fantastic.

EJ is very aggitated this morning, she has been calling constantly for about an hour. What is going on, is she hungry or worried about intruders?

I am addicted to this site, just joined the RSPB and intend visiting one of the Osprey visitor centres tomorrow, probably Peebles as this is the nearest to me

At 10:10 EJ became very agitated again and I saw another bird fly just below the nest, probably another Osprey but not sure

I just love this site. I go to Loch Garten every august to see the ospreys and up till now have always felt that I have missed the unfolding events as they happen. Not this year. I have discovered a couple of things that have helped increase the enjoyment. First of all, the comments from the public regarding fish deliveries are very helpful though it should be noted that the comments page on the video link is not the same as the Loch Garten diary, which can be confusing at times. The best discovery was a download of a free utility (windows system) called always on top, which allows the osprey video window to be there at all times when I am working and needing just a click of the mouse to zoom to full screen when any activity occurs. Absolutely invaluable. Keep up the good work RSPB and see you in August.
