Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

A fishy tale....

Avid blog readers will no doubt know all about Orange VS' questionable fishing abilities. However, on Monday, we were delighted to see that he brought EJ in  two fish - one in the morning, before we opened, and another at 17:40. Having also fed her on Sunday evening we thought that perhaps he had finally stepped up a gear....?

Staff and visitors alike spent most of Tuesday watching and willing VS to return with a fish for EJ but as closing time drew closer our hopes started to fade. We had barely seen him all day let alone with a fish, but all was not lost! After making her wait for around 25 hours, VS flew in with half a 10" brown trout for EJ at around 7pm.

Today VS brought in a fish at 14:10 and handed it over to EJ. She flew off with the fish and took the opportunity to take a well earned break from incubating the eggs. She left VS incubating for just over 2 hours before returning to the nest at around 16:30.

Aside from the fish situation I should probably mention that on Monday we had another osprey hover above the nest. The bird got quite close and EJ was mantling her wings but it quickly flew off again. Also on Tuesday morning a male and a female intruder were spotted at around 8:30am but neither of these cases caused EJ too much concern.

The next blog will be posted on Saturday unless anything extraordinary happens. In the meantime....

I worry about OVS and his fishing skills once the chicks have hatched. EJ will not be able to leave the nest to find food for herself, I hope the big guy proves me wrong

Thanks for the info. Keeley, I haven't seen OVS for ages but am glad he is bringing something for EJ. OVS was so attentive after the egg laying....is it a case of now he has got her (he didn't last yr.) he doesn't have to try so hard. Or is EJ thinking (like many women!) 'if you want something done.................'

Have just found the extra information on the blog page with pictures of EJ, OVS and Henry. Makes it much easier to tell which bird is incubating. Many thanks for this. EJ looks hungry and seems to be calling. OVS must think he has a nagging wife! Maybe that why he leaves her for so long sometimes.

It is now 1.35am and EJ is sleeping peacefully.....can't help feeling sorry for her! Still tomorrow is another day.

5.06 OVS on the nest......can he sense that we are not happy with him and is now taking his responsibilties more seriously?

Just after 8.50 OVS did appear with a piece of fish but EJ wasn't at home - so he left. I think she might have missed out on her supper.

As the birth date draws nigh I think we are all getting concerned about EJ, she sits there so patiently hour after hour. OVS's credentials as a provider are seriously in doubt and I hope he pulls his white socks up soon. The tension is becoming unbearable! Maureen: You really must get some sleep! You'll be good for nothing when the chicks are born!

With all the panting to keep cool, does EJ get thirsty?  She looks so hot. Come on OVS, let us see you a little more on the nest and give EJ a well deserved break for a couple of hours at least!  I agree with Sixy the tension is becoming unbearable and the watching is so addictive.  Maureen do you get any sleep?

My sixth-grade students and I are watching from our school in New York.  We are all very excited as we await the arrival of the chicks.  Unfortunately, due to time zone differences and our school hours, we have yet to actually see OVS bring a fish....I am eager for my students to see that...we'll keep hoping and watching.  We are all addicted, in fact it is getting hard to teach because they are SO INTO WATCHING DEAR EJ!!!!

I missed OVS coming in this time, did he bring EJ a fish? They were both off the nest for a short time and when they landed they looked a bit alarmed, was that my imagination? I agree with sjb that EJ looks hot and thirsty.

Like everyone else, it seems, I'm getting very jumpy. How does EJ survive in such little food? Henry was a far better provider. Maureen, are you a night owl?

Yes Amy, he did bring her something. She has been moving a lot and panting a lot. OVS should be there like Henry...bringing her fish. She is a bird that has layed eggs. That is very hard to do especially with an empty tummy. I have a bird that lays eggs at home so I know!!

"Toooo wit toooo woo"..... Quietwoman, SJB and Sixy I couldn't sleep last night!!!!!!!!! Being addicted, as we all are, I had to have a look...it was nice to see EJ sleeping peacefully. She was off the nest for couple of hours at 5am....hopefully feeding herself. Welcome 'New Yorkers'.

Hi just wanted to say well done RSPB . the past few weeks have been brilliant what between the peregrines goshawk and two osprey nests. Its just so interesting, and nerve wracking. Been members for many years but this is first year I've birded from the couch, - does this make me as bad and sad as Big Brother addicts. I think not.

EJ looks very unhappy this morning......frantic food calling by the look of it, difficult to tell for sure without sound. When did OVS last bring food?
quietwoman
Posted on Friday, 16 May 2008 at 8:32
Without the sound it is difficult to know when EJ is calling and when she is panting. She seems to be calling this am.

Is that OVS on the nest now? Have they takent to exchanging fish off the nest? That'll make it more difficult to keep track of what EJ is eating.
Carol

For last few days have missed seeing OVS on nest so was getting worried. He is on nest now! Even if he doesn't bring fish, he can incubate while EJ fishes for herself. The female osprey at Bassenthwaite was seen to fish for herself last year whilst her mate sat on the nest. OVS may also be feeding EJ off the nest as Ospreys pass fish in md-flight as part of the bonding. At least I hope this is happening!!!

Hi everyone. Just a question really OVS is not feeding EJ that often could it be that he is fishing in a lake where there is not that many fish avalable where Henry has been fishing at the fish farm. could this be one reason why the lack of fish?
Susan Branch

EJ looking a bit sleepy and looks to be nodding off, then her head comes up with a start and calls for OVS. Anybody knows where OVS goes in these long spells away from the ever patient EJ? Did Henry come back to Scotland this year, though I would not like him to upset things at Loch Garten, it would be good to know if all is well with him.

Hello everybody.

Just a quick reminder that questions should be e-mailed to David directly at: david.gascoigne@rspb.org.uk

Put in the subject box 'OSPREY BLOG QUESTION' thus leaving the comments section for comments only.

Hope you enjoy the build-up to Sunday 25 May, when the first egg is due to hatch (roughly).

This is far too addictive.......my house is a tip!! I should walk the dogs...but..maybe just a few more minutes........?

I've got it now!  I think OVS really wants to be a house husband and let EJ go to work.  He does seem reluctant to leave the eggs when changeover comes and then he fusses about tidying the nest!  I have seen him do this a few times.

EJ came back to the nest this morning about 9.30am so it looks like she had time to feed herself.

EJ is looking quite settled this afternoon.........we have heavy rain north of Inverness, but, she looks dry at the moment.Have I missed any food coming her way? I did eventually have to walk the dogs, now trying to concentrate on paper work as well as watch EJ....what will I be like when the chicks hatch?

Poor OVS, his every move catalogued and critiqued! It's just as well he's not a reader of this blog, he'd get a complex. He's on the nest now and having a good wiggle and clearing loose twigs. Good lad VS, I'm rooting for you and looking forward to seeing the chicks hatch!

I am so grateful for this video and everyone's blogs. My swallows didn't come back and the garden is eerily quiet without them. There seems to be just two pairs in the village this year. Has anyone else had a similar experience? At least the sandmartins are back by the river. If I didn't have this video I should feel quite bereft.

I think we have got OVS all wrong you know, I think he is going to be a good Dad and he seems to be a good mate to EJ. He has been sitting on the nest a lot lately, he is sitting there at the moment and it's a Friday night which is traditionally a lads night out ;-)

I just think he is a very bad fisherman so EJ has to bring home the bacon...err fish I mean. This is a very modern relationship

19:30 EJ returns and OVS seemed quite happy just to stay on the eggs, reluctantly he got up to let EJ take over. This is fantastic

I missed the change-over too, but EJ came back at 19.30. At 19.00 OVS went to move a stick and nearly toppled over. He steadied himself by briefly standing on an egg. Stupid boy. But he's our stupid boy.

EJ is back on the nest at 08.38 I don't know how long she was gone for.  I am quite encouraged at the amount of time OVS os spending on the nest, I would like to think that he brings her something each time he arrives even if we don't see it.

I dutifully close my browser when I leave the computer but by the time I get back on the change-over has happened. Very frustrating. Haven't seen OVS bring fish for ages. Nest looks really comfortable, with deep, soft cup and all the grass.

Phew! Dinner is served. OVS brought half eaten fish for EJ. Know for definite she is being fed. OVS was on nest this morning as well so EJ probably had a breakfast in bed!

Isn't it a relief when we know she has been fed.  Perhaps we are being a bit harsh on OVS.  He does do his turn on the eggs after all and takes it very seriously.  Now on countdown for the weekend!  Hope we can see them hatch, wouldn't that be great after watching them all this time.  Our babies, Ah!
