Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Three eggs, two fish, and an intruder!

Three eggs, two fish and an intruder...these are the things that have been getting us all very excited here at the Osprey Centre over the weekend.  The three eggs really do not need an explanation, except to say that we are all getting very excited about the imminent hatching, which fingers crossed should be taking place in roughly a weeks time!  EJ has enjoyed amazing sunny weather this past week while she has been incubating, no repeats of the previous week's thunderstorm!

Orange VS has been a good fisherman, as well as security guard (more on that later!) over the weekend!  Yesterday (Sunday), he brought EJ two fish - a 12" whole Brown Trout at 9.33 and another fish (headless this time!) at 14.20.  EJ was able to enjoy the afternoon fish and take a well earned two hour break from the nest, while VS incubating the eggs.  However, this was not the case with the fish that was delivered at 9.33, which she had to bolt down in little over 15 minutes, which brings us onto the intruder....

We were all very impressed and proud of VS when he brought in a good sized fish, relatively early in the day.  He handed the fish over to EJ, she went off to her favourite perch to eat it, and VS, after a bit of fidgetting, settled down on the eggs, all was well with the world.

Then at 9.44 VS started alarm calling, we could see another osprey above the nest!  However, EJ was oblivious, happily munching away on her fish.  At  9.46, the intruder flew over again, and this time VS gave chase, leaving the eggs alone on the nest, as it started to rain.  At 9.48, EJ returned to the nest, with some of the fish still in her talon, she proceeded to eat this as quickly as possible, whilst standing over the eggs and shielding them from the rain!  At 10.10, the intruder returned, and so did VS to chase it away!  However, this osprey was like the wasp that always flies around a picnic, it would not be told, and just kept coming back! At 10.30 VS chased it way from the nest, again at 10.35, VS guarded the nest standing alongside EJ at 10.55, and then flew off again at 11.05. Phew!

When the coast was clear, at 11.20, he flew off, returning in the afternoon, with another fish.  We know very little about the intruding bird, as in never landed for long enough for us to check if it was male or female, nevermind check for a ring!  One things for certain, things are getting very exciting here at Loch Garten!

Claire: thanks for the rundown of events yesterday. I saw OVS getting agitated and chasing something yesterday but obviously I couldn't see what. Our brave boy, he's a hero. He's certainly showing his true colours now.

We keep missing all the excitement but are enjoying reading all the comments which help us keep up with the action. We're going to be on holiday when the eggs begin to hatch but my daughter is going to check the video/blog and text us with updates.

Having had a busy weekend  and was not able to see much of the comings and goings it was great to read your update Claire.  Thank you for keeping us all up to date. It is getting very nail biting now. Another favourite family haunt of ours is the Loch of Lowes (SWT) reserve  and it is good to see that the first Osprey chick there looks strong and healthy.  Not long now EJ and OVS, we are all rooting for you......7 days and counting...

Thanks for the update Claire - I have been waiting for it with bated breath.

On Saturday morning VS brought his 'wife' a HUGE piece of fish (head missing). I too saw VS getting agitated and wondered what was going on. It is great to see VS being more protective.......maybe he has picked up our worried vibes. I agree with Sixy he IS showing his true colours now.

We really enjoyed seeing EJ 'in person' on Friday. She looks very contented in her nest and fingers crossed everything proceeds well. My daughter Ruby was particularly excited to see 'the birdy' in real life, and can't wait for the 'eggs to bopen and the babies coming out' (her words!) Keep up the great work!

I curse my daughter for getting me into this, I am totally hooked, stuck at the computer screen for hours at a time but oh what fun!

Can't wait for the eggs to hatch. My daughter is at Glasyln working as a volunteer, helping to guard their Osprey. It's all so much more exciting  than Big Brother!

I am amazed at what has happend regarding EJ and OVS. They are both very interesting birds. Watching these two birds is too addicting! Right now I am watching OVS sitting on the eggs. Thank goodness that bird is starting to bring EJ more food. Hopefully he keeps the good work up with bringing the fish twice a day!!

Who needs Coronation St or Eastenders with a story like this one! Its so addictive and I know many of us will be glued to the webcam over next weekend waiting for the hatching - I feel like I want to knit some bootees!! Fantastic work Loch Garten - hope to visit you early July to see them in the flesh (or feathers)

My students and I are still watching from across the pond from eastern Long Island, New York.  We have many Osprey here locally near the shore, yet are not lucky enough to have a nest-side web cam such as you have!  So this is a real treat for the students to see what is taking place in the nest.  We have the video on full time during class on a lap top at the head of the room.  Sometimes, I am in the middle of teaching or reading and suddenly, they will all yell, "there she goes!" or "Here comes OVS!"  It is such an exciting distraction, and they are also learning so much.  Many of the students have taken to watching full time at home at night and over the weekends.  They are also enjoying investigating your website and taking the initiative to educate themselves on the goshawks and peregrines as well!  It has been so entertaining and educational at the same time.  A teacher could not hope for more....and this is all before the eggs have even hatched!!!  We are cultivating a nice young group of future bird-watchers over here!  Thanks rspb!

11.33 OVS just arrived with a small fish. Hurray - the first time I have managed to be watching at just the right time. EJ has flown off with it.

11.33 After EJ calling frantically for three quarters of an hour, OVS came back with a large fish.  We can all rest easy now for a while.

I don't know about anyone else but my own fish intake seems to have increased lately!  I wonder why?

Bother! I missed the bringing of fish, again.....never mind, just seen the handover, I love the way EJ wriggles as she gets comfy back on the eggs.

I have to say, Sixy, that the idea of raw, often headless trout doesn't do it for me.......

13.11 EJ back on the nest. I can now concentrate on my work without all the distraction!

11.34 OVS brings a good sized fish for EJ and she disappears till 13.10. Our couple seem to have found out what the other wants. I'm all excited about the weekend.

Andi K said: I love the way EJ wriggles as she gets comfy back on the eggs. (Have to say....... sorry folks!) Reminds me of Winnie the Poo as he settles to eat honey! Keep up the fanrtastic work up there many thanks! just can't wait for those eggs to hatch!

Andi, you haven't lived 'til you've had raw trout, EJ and OVS will tell you that!! However, I must admit I don't like the heads on either! I have been researching the incubation of eggs this pm and the ospreys at Rutland Water last year incubated for 34 days and in my bird book it says 35 days, some say 35-40 days. Don't want to throw a spanner in the works about your plans for the weekend but it may happen Wednesday or Thursday or even next week!! What do the experts at Loch Garten think?

I've missed all the excitement again! Just back; so thanks everyone for all the comments. I had a nail-biting weekend wondering what was happening. So pleased to hear that EJ is being well fed and the eggs well protected. Wonderfully detailed update from Claire. Thanks.

Jus t tuned in to wathch OVS wrestling with a stick...I take it that I missed food coming in again!! I have to say, Sixy, that if the egg hatching is any other day than sunday, that would be fine by me.....it is the only day that I will be away from the computer.......so knowing my luck, it will happen right on time.

Hi Andi.K.....I thought our 'parents to be' had been doing a spot of DIY.....making a play pen?.....the sticks look (to my eye) as if they have been deliberately/carefully placed. Sixy, stop eating all the fish.....there will soon be three more mouths to feed!! I am making plans for the weekend.....picnic basket with caviar, smoked salmon, cucumber sandwichees and ,of course, Champagne OR will it be the usual bacon roll and mug of tea!!! Who will be FIRST to see the hatching?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

poor EJ. She looks so tired. Head dropping and all, nodding off just to wake up with a start a few seconds later.

All three osprey eggs have hatched at Glaslyn. The ospreys at Rutland and Bassenthwaite are still incubating as is Logie at Forres in Moray although she didn't return until after our EJ had laid her first egg. Come on girl, you and OVS can do it this year!
