Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Our first chick is fit and well

Firstly, apologies for not updating last night as promised....  I wanted to wait until the chick had been fed a couple of times before reporting anything. Those of you who are familiar with last year's events will know that our first two chicks both died within 24 hours of hatching. Admittedly that was probably down to the eggs not being as viable as they should have been, nonetheless I wanted to wait until I was confident that this chick was going to survive - it would have been wrong of me to drum up a euphoria only to dash it a few hours later.

So..... our chick. It does look very strong, after only 70 minutes (10.10am) it was moving around on the nest, it made several contact calls during the day which was a good sign, but the best sight was at 17.15 when OVS landed on the nest with a headless rainbow trout, our chick was upright and calling for food.....EJ duly fed it; the chick had a further feed just after 21.00.

Things are looking good at the moment and we are all looking forward to the second chick....When? Monday or Tuesday I suspect but rest assured, when it does appear we will let you know.

Can I ask a favour of all blog readers? Please be patient about getting your comments posted and questions answered. It is busier than ever at the moment so I can't answer questions or accept comments immediately...... we do appreciate your input so thank you for your comments, messages, questions and of course support.

If you want to specifically help the Loch Garten Osprey Team 2008, you might consider supporting the RSPB. You can do this online via the RSPB website: http://www.rspb.org.uk/join, if you add the code PR08, your membership will be credited to the Loch Garten team.

Thanks David for the positive info. Can I ask how you know the chick made contact calls? Can you hear it from the hide or can you tell just by watching it? EJ seems to be calling alot this morning, is OVS keeping her waiting?

Great news for the whole team and for us watching at home. We look forward to seeing 2 & 3 doing well too. Thank you for your updates which keep us informed when we can't be there. I expect you will be even busier at the centre soon with visitors wanting to see the chicks in real life and we appreciate you updating the blog when time allows. Trish

Horay 9.26 and OVS has finally responded to EJ's calls. The chick is amazing, only 24 hours old and so alert! They are both getting much better at feeding.

Oh it just gets better. I had just left my last comment, went back to the camera and seconds later OVS brought in a fish. What a treat to see that tiny head bobbing about keen for a meal. It is amazing to see EJ ripping lumps off for herself then so gently passing tiny morsels down to her chick. OVS quickly flew off though, do his fatherly duties not extend to feeding the chicks like Henry did?! Trish

I'm watching from Memphis, Tennessee, USA and I check in everyday to see how things are going. I haven't been able to see the chick yet, but I'm patiently waiting. Thanks RSPB for allowing me to witness this amazing event so many miles away!

OVS brought in supper - its incredible watching EJ breaking the fish apart and then feeding, ever so gently, the chick - you can see him/her clearly asking for food as it edges closer to mum - "some for me mum!" how fantastic to witness this little family life - cant wait for he next hatchings - we have an osprey on Mull at the moment which we are all trying to track down!

Amazing to see the chick being fed by EJ this morning. Think we have timed our visit to Loch Garten just in time for fledging so hope to see live and not on camera, first flight of chick(s).

It is absolutely fabulous being able to read of the progress and watch the live video feed. I have just watched mum feeding chick. Thank you so much for allowing us to share this. We don't get the chacne to visit Loch Garten more than about once a year.

I can imagine the Loch Garten viewing centre stuffed with people at the moment, the weather being so bad for this holiday down south, so thanks to the team for keeping us informed. This chick is very handsome! I had no idea markings would be so good. Have to go away for a few days so shall be relying on Maureen and all 'bloggers' for what I may have missed.

9.47am on Monday morning and EJ is calling madly again. Question, how far is EJ's call audible and how far away does OVS usually go when he is away from the nest? Congrats on first hatching and good luck with the remaining 2

Have I seen the second little at 10:08 (British time)????? Ej was so nervous this morning... OVS has brought two well-sized fishes in an hour, then took away part of one... Congratulation again, family is growing!

Got a bit worried there as EJ was away from the little one and the eggs for 10 minutes. Couldn't stand the worry so had to get up and sort my washing out!!! Glad to see she's now back!

Hi everyone, I saw the first chick hatch but missed the second, I think I'm getting a bit to posessive, I'm quite jealous of those who saw no.2. EJ just got up for a preen and saw both chicks together, isn't it amazing how much no.1 has advanced in so short a time. EJ is quite rough with them though, no.1 got stood on again as she got up. Will be waiting with anticipation to see a feed.
