Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Don't Panic

The previous blog was just to say goodbye and thank you from Team LG for your support. The blog will continue in a slightly different style until it becomes a forum - it will be a short information piece about the birds location - the latter part of this blog will give an example of what information you will get; the team is still around for a couple of weeks so if you are local and wanted to say goodbye in person - your presence would be more than welcomed.

If you are suffering from blog withdrawal then there are plenty more RSPB blogs which you can visit http://blogs.rspb.org.uk/mulleagles/ is my favourite.

OK - Update on the birds. Data was downloaded at 06.26 this morning (30th August) and the birds still haven't moved much from their previous locations.

As of 21.00 on 29/08/08 - Nethy was 1.35km SE of Fairford.

As of 04.00 on 30th August - Deshar was 2.6km NW of Hythe.

The data shows that the birds are still active and flying around. It is not unusual for birds to take a few extended stop-overs on migration. As soon as they move, you will know.

UPDATE FROM FAIRFORD.  Hi everybody. We have been keeping watch for Nethy. Last evening we went back to the location where we saw her last and were amazed to here her distinctive cries just as it was getting dark. With great excitement we decided that at first light this morning, we would set out to see if we could spot her. We chose a good spot under a well covered tree next to the river and waited. What happened next was just unbelievable. She suddenly appeared over the top of the tree we were under and circled round several times. she looked so graceful as she glided around and she also took time out to see off another bird calling out as she did. She looks in extremely good shape. I was madly taking as many photos as I could. She then continued down the river and we could hear her calling in the distance. We rush home to download the photos.  We got better results this time -  we can clearly see her radio tag. It brought a tear to our eyes .

To be able to get a second chance to see her is just unbearable. We will keep looking as long as she is around. We will send the photos to the LG team and hopefully they can put them up for you all to see.

It's sad to see the Centre closing for the winter but we have enjoyed the times with you all at Abernethy. As always we were greeted with enthusiasm and up to date news on each visit, the team was friendly and cheerful whatever the weather, and made each visit worthwhile even when nothing was happening. We hope some of the familiar faces will be around next year epsecially the old man (Dave). Thank you one and all.

Thanks, AGAIN, David!  Comforting to hear that despite Google Earth, the birds are still active. In mourning for another reason this a.m.----- the sudden and unexpeced demise of Geoff. Perkins (Hitchhikers, Mornington Crescent etc.). Oh dear, what a loss!

Thanks David, that's great news. Nethy and Deshar must feel quite secure where they are at the moment. It's good to see such confidence. By the way David, during all the references to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you didn't mention  'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe'. Nethy comes to mind! Not that I would wish her to fly anywhere other than her proper winter destination but the thought might make a great cartoon!

Thankyou David, you look after us so well...............and yes the Mull sea eagle blog is also my joint favorite although not quite as active as yours. Dave (the mull Dave) has a way of almost taking you there with his vivid descriptive stories.

I hope all us bloggers do stay around and stick with this blog throughout the winter. I am sure we will find lots to discuss.

Thank you very much David! This Osprey family has become part of our lives.

It is so reassuring that Bengee and other have reported seeing them. It must be a thrill to actually see them and know they are doing well.

I am not surprised they are staying in  one area for a while before they move on. They probably found  great fishing and are enjoying the feast. I am sure they love the fact they don't need to wait for someone to bring  food they can  get it themselves any time they are  hungry

I am looking forward to the winter blog!!

Thanks to everyone at LG  for all you do for these  magnificent birds. And thanks for sharing it  with us.

Thanks david!!

Bengee, how marvellous that you have been given another chance to see Nethy and that she is in good shape, trust her to be seeing off another bird!!

That will be lovely ,if the photos could be put on the web, so we can all see them too!!

Isn't it just great that you are in the area where Nethy is, it's just like the blog has turned up trumps for her, as you may not have realized She was there, if you hadn't been part of this huge family looking out for our babies!!

Great too, that Deshar has been sighted a couple of times and looks fine!!

The weather here down South is lovely today and would have been ideal for the chicks next push South, let's hope more good weather is going to come, in the next few days, although tomorrow, rain is forecast again.

Hope you decide to have another year as Osprey warden David, I think you are very good at your job and was so sorry not to meet you, when we came up to Loch Garten on the 21st August.

I managed to get a photo of Deshar yesterday, I think with the transmitter visible on his back. You can see it at http://www.freewebs.com/folkestonebirds/osprey.htm

I am not publicising the exact location though to keep disturbance to a minimum. Access to the area is tricky too.

REPLY - THAT IS DESHAR, and check out his crop..... looks like he's had a good feed too. Thanks for the picture.

Thanks-- your sightings  reassured all of us that  "our" chicks are doing great.

Nethy is chasing off other birds and she is still a juvenile. Imagine what she will be like when she has chicks?  She will  probably rip out the feathers of any bird who comes within a mile of her nest. The word will get around in the Osprey community "Don't mess with Nethy" LOL

Well, it's catch-up time and what an interval it's been! We intended to enjoy a week's "relaxation" at a friend's cottage. First day, we went to Glaslyn but the ospreys, though still around, didn't oblige, not anywhere!

First night we thought old dog (nearly 16) had had a stroke, and for the next couple of days we couldn't leave her so didn't go anywhere, even to sit in the garden because the weather was cold and wet and miserable. Bank Holiday of course, so all local vets charging double so we waited till Tuesday and took her the 50-odd miles to our own vet. Not a stroke, some ear imblance which is common in older dogs. Decided to come home where she is a diffent dog - knows where she is, no stress, no disorientation. We have decided on no more holidays or kennels until her time is up.

Last night I returned to the cottage (alone) and spent today tidying up  - the weather was glorious - could have spent all day sitting in the garden enjoying the sunshine. Who mentioned S..'s Law in an earlier blog? I guess you were spot on!

So, Susan Warne and Wee Jeannie, that means no Scotland later this year but thanks both for the tips about where to go - will keep them in mind. Wee Jeannie - don't forget to let us know when you plan to visit Glaslyn next year.

Bengee and Ian Roberts, thanks for the great news about Nethy and Desahr, it's wonderful that someone can see them now and again and keep us updated. Do we have any European friends who can supply information as well?

To all "bloggers", thanks for keeping us up to date when we haven't been here. Thanks for the tips about other sites to visit - wil make a list and work through them one by one!

Wild Freckle, I am now ging to look at your "facebook" site and see what luck I have because I don't think I will survive the winter without news, though I know everyone will be back in the spring.

LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST: I can't thank the LG team enough for all the trouble they have gone to, despite the pressure they must have been under, to keep us all informed - despite our occasional stupid and impatient questions; despite being inundated with visitors all season - they have shown such patience, humour, pathos and general understanding and they are just wonderful. It's a shame they won't be together again next year but whatever the future holds for them all, I hope it brings them good health, interesting jobs and lots more brilliant birds.

Ian - what a superb photo of our Deshar! Thankyou so much for sharing it - now we look forward to seeing Burnie's photos of Nethy, though I'm sure she will look as well as Deshar does!

Gillo - sorry to hear your holiday didn't go as planned. Do hope your dog continues to do ok. I know the feeling - I didn't have a holiday for three years  because my elderly Jack Russell couldn't be left.  But the welfare of a beloved pet comes first doesn't it?

Will definately let you know when we intend to visit Glaslyn next year.  Meanwhile, let's hope our two chicks make it safely to Africa, and that EJ  and VS return next Spring.

Bengee - how wonderful to see Nethy again - she must be fishing well to look so fit - I really do feel they are our babies and get quite teary thinking of them both taking such a long journey. Also glad there have been sightings of Deshar, Steve - wonderful pic of Deshar, Ian, and nice to hear, David, you confirming it is Deshar. Glad too, David, to hear that this blog will continue but in a slightly different form - great stuff. We have a lot of mosquitoes on our farm which provide great fodder for our bats and barn swallows every summer. A family of swallows come back each year to nest over the light in our hay barn. When we first moved here I went out one morning to see a golden eagle perched on my washing line post about 15 feet from my back porch. It stayed there a while and was such a thrill - I didn't dare breathe. This is the first time I have ever wanted to become a blogger and what a great group of people it is - I certainly picked a good one. Thanks again David to you and your team - we will miss you so much but wish you every good wish in your futures. Best to all from Canada.

I was just having a little chuckle to myself - first, we were worried Deshar wasn't getting enough to eat with pushy Nethy, then we worried that he wouldn't get off his comfy nest and fledge, then it was worry whether he could fish for himself, now we'll start worrying whether they'll leave U.K. in time before bad weather sets in!!!  What a bunch of typical parents (although my only youngster just married a week ago and left the nest empty so I have to worry about someone)!!

I've been lurking on this blog since the beginning, only posting a couple of times. I also post on the Mull sea eagle blog. Interesrting point Sally-A. I have just realised that Nethy and Deschar are first young ospreys to feature on a webcam and then be satellite tracked. Since term juvenile has normally only applied up to migration maybe we need a new name for a migrating juvenile osprey.

Wow and now a picture of Nethy. THANKS She  looks well fed! It is  hard to  realize they are only 3 months  old. She  definitely looks like EJ's daughter. I am sure it is also a thrill for all the  people at LC to see how well they are doing.

Their journey is far from over, but  I think they crossed one of the biggest hurdles and that is learning to fish. Even if they get lost they will be  OK  as long as they can feed themselves.

It is so nice to see recent pictures of our two babies, looking so good.  A big relief that they are thriving.  I am secretly hoping that Nethy will head slightly southeast and pass over Brighton Hove - I would so love to catch sight of her.  Looking on google, you can see that they both have water nearby, so they have found themselves a good stopover to rest up and fill up!!  I assume that Osprey are quite happy with sea fish as well as fresh water fish, or is that a silly question.  I suppose a fish is a fish wherever it comes from.

Ian, THANKYOU so much for that wonderful photo of Deshar.  I wish I had been there with you.  I just fill up every time I look at it.  He looks so beautiful, what a handsome bird he is.  I am really pleased that they are taking the time to recuperate.  Deshar must indeed be experiencing a new life where he, AND ONLY HE, is king, can eat what he wants and no greedy Nethy to take it away.  Thank you, thank you again.  You are so clever to find him.

I don't know where to find the photo of Nethy with the pike.  Can someone help please.  Bengee, how brilliant you have spotted her again.  How can we see your photos?  I find it extraordinary that we have been able to see them like this and from fellow bloggers.
