Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

No change.....

Friday again, and I've just updated the map with Nethy's movements for this week. She's stuck to the same place, no sign yet of her getting the urge to move somewhere new. There were a few gaps in the data, so I'll fill them in on Monday (assuming they come though).

The weather here at Abernethy is still very spring-like, if you are working hard enough it is almost t'shirt weather. Though with only 2 weeks left of March now, there are a million things that need to be finished off. Must dash - there's some cake in the kitchen!

Have a nice weekend,

Alice

Much appreciate all you and the team are doing at the reserve - it's pity EJ is without thr tracker but I guess we all need much patience for her safe return and who will be her mate this year ... How old is EJ Alice P.S. I hope you enjoyed the cake :) Clivet

Hi Alice. Thanks, again, for the update. Nethy seems very settled which is a comfort. I'm still keeping fingers crossed for EJ!

Hi Folks, I haven't participated in the blog since last year, but I have been keeping up to date with all the goings on. Thank you for your continued blog writing over the winter. I can feel the excitement as the end of march nears. EJ must be well on her way home now, and I wonder what joys and dissappointments this season will bring. I cant wait!

Have just booked into an Aviemore B&B with my wife and will be paying a visit to Caperwatch and regular viewing times. I'll probably be the one with the SWT fleece and we'll no doubt take a proud look at the plaque in honour of Kate's grandparents on the wall of the hide. Oh yes, we'll probably take a look at the Ospreys and hopefully Capers too. :D Will try to visit Insh Marshes too this time as we never quite made it last time. Would love to catch a glimpse of a Ptarmigan too around Cairngorm or something. Does that seem likely??? Another distillery tour might be in order too!!!

Sadly though, Kate, my wife, doesn't fancy the really early start to get to Corrimony for the Black Grouse Safari so I'm going to try and get back up that way on the following weekend when she's got rehearsals. Better book it quick though. We did see one once on the way from the 5K race at Balmoral to Loch Garten when we decided to drop in. 1st time I'd ever seen one followed about 30 seconds later by my 1st Red Grouse. Surely an RSPB moment. We only really saw Ospreys and Red Squirrels and things like that afterwards. Still to see the Crossbills though so that is next on my must see list!!!

Thanks Alice, for making time to update us when I'm sure that you are all run off your feet. Nethy certainly seems to find places where there is a continued food supply and that certainly shouldn't be a surprise. It will be interesting to see where she moves to in her first year and hopefully it won't be too long before Mum returns. Can't wait!

Lovely to have an update on Nethy she obviously has found good fishing there.

It's good to see on Roy Dennis's site that Beatrice is well on her way north.  What a shame it is that EJ doesn't have a tracker so we could know where she is but then I suppose that would spoil her big entrance. Two weeks to go, can't wait, holiday booked and we will be there on the 1st come sun or snow!

I'm looking forward to a new season in Loch Garten. What wille be happening this year. will EJ return, Orange VS, Nethy. And what about Henry, will a miracle happen??

I am from the Netherlands, so not a very regular visitor in Loch Garten, but this blog is on my favorites on the computer.

This summer we will be going to Scotland again, and will be visiting you there!! I'm looking forward to it, love you there, with all your enthusiasm.

see you then.

I'll bring you some cookies!!

Been silent all winter as I had no computer I could use. I have now migrated (permanently) from London to the Exe Estuary - hurrah. Looking forward to EJ coming home. Thank you Alice for keeping us all going through the winter. When do you start updating this site more often (NOT a complaint!)

REPLY: Hi Libs, from 1st April we hope to get more frequent data on Nethy, to see whether she does make any early movments north at all, in her first Spring.  The 2009 osprey season blog will be written in earnest very soon, promise.  We are just so very busy right now, installing cameras, getting the Osprey Centre ready for opening on 1st April, etc etc, all things osprey really.  So not much office time right now, hence blog & e-mail answers at night.  Bear with us please, thanks.  -

We understand totally that you're all very busy up there! It's just we (well, certainly me) are very excited about the start of the new season. Best wishes and thanks to you and Alice (and all Ospreys.....).

Will be there a few days after it opens!!  Can't wait.  It's like an annual pilgrimage now. There is something magical about the place.  Also have to see a Ptarimigan as my wife is sure she saw one around Tomintoul whilst driving around for work.

Reading Roy's blog tonight he says the first osprey has been seen at Aviemore.  Not long to go now hopefully!

You can feel the expectation in the air! Can't wait to see EJ and OVS again. I wonder if Henry will appear. Tiger, what are the chances? Let's pray for good weather and plenty of fish so that they can raise a good brood. The only downside for me is that I don't have a computer any more and will go mental not being able to see them every day. Maureen McCann, are you still with us?
