Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Yes, we have a male.

I've just arrived at the office to post a blog up-date, but the immediacy of having a live-streaming webcam is that judging by all the comments I've just gone through and published, you know the news already!

Yep, we have a male osprey.  These past two days of high pressure, fine weather - good for migration, has no doubt seen a surge in arrivals of more migrant birds, ospreys amongst them.

He arrived yesterday afternoon, 3rd April at about 1.30pm. It is not Henry or VS, but an all new suitor for EJ, an unringed bird, origins unknown.  He's looking good so far. How's this for his first 24 hours - seven sky-dance display flights above the nest to impress EJ, seven matings so far, all deemed to be successful, he's brought her one fish so far at 8am this morning, and he has been bringing in nesting material, sticks and moss etc and he's done some nest scraping too. He's thrilled visitors with some very close approaches to the Osprey Centre building, when making sorties to collect sticks. It looks like this boy means business.  Thankfully, EJ would appear to like the cut of his jib, and has been quite accepting of him at and near the nest. Phew, that's a relief!

Needless to say, we're thrilled at this latest development and right now it's looking good. Time will tell, whether he can also repel all boarders, as other chancer-male ospreys come in-aboot the nest, as they will.  Will VS be amongst them?  Sparks to come for sure, no doubt.  Watch this space.  As if you wouldn't!

So now that we have a pair, you can expect to see more of EJ, as she settles in, in earnest. For much of the past week or so, she had tended to perch nearby in an adjacent tree, out of shot, to the frustration of some of you.

The Osprey Centre opened on Wednesday 1st April, so we've all been busy meeting and greeting the first of this seasons's visitors.  Why not come and see the newly weds for yourself?

Many thanks for all the comments of support etc re the news about Nethy.  Much appreciated.

Game on.

Richard Thaxton Site Manager Loch Garten.

She seems happy to see him, which is good, long may this continue. Here's hoping he keeps coming with the fish and sticks and makes a good mate for EJ.

He is handsome for sure Richard , so no leg rings so no idea where he came from - so what will we call him ??? as we call EJ easy jane !!! how about calling him Tarzan , he might just have to be big and strong to defend EJ against others incl OVS should be 'exciting'to see . WOW congrats to everyone .

Delighted that EJ has a mate. Watched both birds on the nest at 09:30 this morning and saw them mating. Looking forward to the coming months with their highs and lows.

Good news Richard, thanks for the update. I wish I could visit the center some day :)

Oh rats! I was convinced it was Henry, even though his eye colouring seemed more yellow and I did think I could see a metal ring on his right leg. Wishful thinking on my part perhaps.

They looked so comfortable together right from the start which only added impetus to my feelings about this bird.

I wish them both, and you all, a successful season Richard.

Richard great news the new male has obviously impressed her and been very attentive in more ways than one so far. I saw EJ for the first time today had been looking all week and at last have managed to catch up with her. Happy nesting.

Thank goodness you won't have to eat your binoculars Richard - now I don't need to bring indigestion tablets for you when I come to LG at Easter. It's so exciting to see EJ with a new guy. Wishing her all the best, and here's to a good season for everyone at LG. I'll be glued to the computer every spare moment - it's so addictive.

Over on the Facebook Loch Garten bloggers we were hoping it was Henry - we do have a soft spot for him although he wasnt the best provider - but we are delighted that EJ has a mate and seem to be getting on like a house on fire!  Are we in for another exciting season - what will happen if OVS returns?  Could Henry return? or will they just be a loving pair of osprey parents raising their chicks without any incidents?? who knows - this is better than any telly programme - have a great season at LG - the eagle hide on Mull opens on Monday - full details at http://www.rspb.org.uk/datewithnature/sites/mull/index.asp

That's excellent news! Seems like a nice boy and potentially a good provider - just what we want for our EJ! Here's hoping for a successful outcome.

I've been ridiculously bouncy all day and wasted too much time watching the webcam when I should have been busy with other stuff! This has made my weekend.

I realise a name is already in mind but I vote for Clint - as befits The Bird With No Name.

Have you given him the third degree, Richard and found out if his intentions are honourable! Hope he proves to be a worthy mate for our lovely EJ.

Wow he is handsome! And he seems to know  the courtship rules of a sky dance and a fish for his lady.  I saw them both on  the nest and EJ  appears to approve of him. He was busy with nest work and clearly marking his territory . I hope he proves to be a great provider and protector  for EJ and the  future chicks   IF OVS returns it  will be  interesting to see what he does. Feathers may fly!

If this is an unmarked mate for E.J.,and he stays, and helps rear a healthy brood, why dont we call him Harry(for this season only obviously, unless he can be marked),for easy reference, and it gives it a wee bit of connection wth Princes Diana`s kids.Or is that being too soppy?

I Just looked at the nest and it is a mess!! The new guy brought in a lot of  nest material and just dumped it everywhere.

EJ and the new guy have a lot of work to do  in the next ten days.

As it looks today there isn't  a clear space large enough for a hummingbird to lay eggs, much less an Osprey.

So pleased that she has found a male, let's hope it all goes smoothly now!  It was fantastic to have seen them for real this last week and thanks to all at the centre for the usual warm welcome.  Please make sure some of the box of goodies finds its way to Alice for keeping us updated through the winter months.  Looking forward to seeing some chicks when we come back in June.

Everybody thinks he is a dead ringer for Henry. Could he be related? In which case, hope EJ was not his mum! Is there any way of DNA testing - if he sheds a feather for example?

I've just watched Nethy busy working on her nest. A pinpoint-detail ,sharp picture. She looks so beautiful and fit I'm surprised all the male Osprey in the area aren't courting her! By the way, I don't seem to have sound for this webcam is the problem yours or mine? Sound from LoLowes is OK.

I'm having a lovely time watching the 2 of them this afternoon...........he's very diligent with nest improvements, isn't he? Witnessed one mating..not sure if it was succesful he did look as though he was standing on EJ's head!! It is rather breezy, so will give him benefit of the doubt. He looks much darker than EJ, very hansome.

I am so enjoying watching him bring in pieces of moss or lichen - thinks's doing his"bit" for EJ. Really fascinating to watch their courting behaviour together with occasional mating. Long may it last!

hi

Do you have any footage of a sky dance?  I've never been lucky enough to see one. I did see the matings yesterday though.  The male just seemed to zoom in and attack from the air!!!!!  I was totally taken by surprise but EJ seemed to know whats what  - good job eh!!

Can't wait to hear what you decide on for a name - we are speculating on the LG Bloggers site.  At the moment I think of him as EJ's knight in shining armour because he seems to be doing such a good job, so he looks like a Lancelot or Galahad.  But that could all change if other suitors come on the scene and he is ousted!  I hope not.

He has been busy bringing nesting material. Then I saw another mating and now  he is just resting  on the nest. EJ has been looking skyward so maybe there are other Osprey in the area and he is guarding/staking his territory.

Fascinating!!   He looks very  determined so I wonder if he would allow another osprey to  oust him. I also don't have any  sound.

I've waited over a week to see EJ on the nest and this morning I managed to get a glimpse of her, she looks so good and healthy, like she's in love :-)  I've also managed to get a look at the new boy on the block, wow, he's so handsome, fingers crossed we have a successful year.  Planning a visit to the centre late May and hope to see chicks on the nest.  Totally addicted to the ospreys and the Mull white-tailed sea eagles, can't get enough and with the new season starting, it's so exciting :-)  Keep up the good work.

EJ and the new mate seem to be really hitting it off! Saw them mating at 8:00am.  Hope all goes well for them - a stand-off with OVS might make good viewing but thee's enough fighting on TV.  Do you all now feel like anxious parents?  I know i do and I'm not workig at LG (worse luck).

Had planned to visit this weekend then postponed it until the weekend of the 17th.  Typical to have missed all the action. Ej will be well settled on her eggs,(hopefully) when we arrive but you never know, we might be lucky to see her partner bring her fish and swap brooding shifts.

Great to see Ospreys' back ....I am currently at PiperDam Osprey centre (Near Dundee) with my 3 grandsons' for the weekend - but no Ospreys here for 2 years now...Although an Osprey has been seen almost daily taking fish from the stocked loch...could this be any of the Abernethy Ospreys I wonder ??

Looking forward to visiting Boat of Garten in early May...

People here are concerned about what may happen if OVS returns. I had the opportunity to see the new guy up close while he sat for quite some time next to the camera He has a " Don't mess with Milt" look in his eyes. Sort of like Nethy did. I think he may get nasty if OVS or any other bird tries to steal his nest and lady.

Another mating at about 7.30am. Our 'White Knight' seems to be very attentive to his duties. Something was going on in the air above the nest earlier, from EJ's behaviour, are there other Osprey taking an interest in the nest or was WK displaying again? Although I wish OVS no harm, I hope he is thriving somewhere other than around the Loch Garten area.

I have been watching quite frequently but as yet to see a fish brought to the nest and eaten - would I be correct in thinking that at present when the Male returns with a fish EJ would take it to a favourite perch to eat it ?  REPLY: Yes.

I must say Richard it is so good to be able to see these amazing birds going about their normal daily activity limited as it is to us that cannot visit Loch Garten and see more etc ... at the moment I might add.

One thing is missing though ........ Sound, I know I have mentioned this before but it is wonderfull to hear that shrill call.
