Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

No easter egg for EJ!

We were all very excited on Monday morning, as EJ had roosted on the nest on Sunday night, usually a sign that she is soon to lay an egg!  We watched and waited with baited breath all day yesterday, but to no avail!  And no sign of one yet today, so we shall keep watching and waiting!

The weekend was a busy one both in the centre and on the nest, with all of us enjoying the beautiful spring sunshine!  Following my previous blog, Odin returned with a rainbow trout, which would suggest he has just discovered the fish farm!  However, the majority of his fish continue to be brown trout.

Here is a brief run down of the antics on the nest since Saturday morning -

- Odin has brought in ten fish.

- They have mated forty-two times.

- They have both been nest scrapping to prepare the nest cup for the eggs, as well as bringing in more branches and moss.

As if all that was not enough, the pair had a hectic Easter Sunday, having to chase three ravens and an intruding osprey away from the nest!  Another male osprey also attempted to woo EJ with a display flight this afternoon, but she was having none of it, especially as Odin had just brought her a fish!

So we await the next fish.....and the first egg.....

Their week-end sounds much busier than mine! They really are a busy couple :o) - am really enjoying watching their courtship. EJ should be the envy of every other female osprey in the area (who hasn't got a steady partner!) by having such a handome and attentive "other half"! Fingers crossed this attention will last from start-to-finish. x

Thanks for the update - it certainly looks as if the pair are forming a really good relationship....my grandsons' are glued to the screen looking for the first egg... I can't imagine how we will cope thro the incubation period...(my grandson is asking how long this is ??) Thanks - this is really great fun and a good way to spend time with my grandsons' Alan Bell 14/04/2009

We had a fantastic afternoon at the Osprey Centre on Easter Sunday. What a great place. Odin was away for quite a long time and my partner waited and waited to get a photograph of him bringing in a fish. Needless to say as my partner stepped outside for 2 minutes Odin brought in a fish!!!!!

Odin just brought another fish!! He is our hero! He may become a favorite resident male like Henry if he keeps this up! People watching other nests are counting eggs. After last year we are counting fish brought to the nest.

I am so glad that Odin is looking after EJ. After last year she deserves a mate that will pull his weight. Odin seems to be the perfect package.... so far so good.....hopefully the first egg will be soon and the fish will keep rolling in and I'm pleased he has found the fish farm at last bless him:-))

Sounds like a good time is being had by all! Wish I didn't have to wait till July to see it all for myself - but hopefully there will be chicks by then! Odin seems to be taking good care of EJ - well done to him, she deserves it.

I'm very impressed with Odinas evertyone else seems to be. With OVS I just never knew if he would bring fish - or not!! but this is only my second year Osprey watching. I can't help thinking that if Odin carries on supplying the fish in good numbers we may get all chicks fledged this year as with plentiful food there would maybe be no fighting over food. I keep on hoping. How on earth can a bird I've only seen the once affect my life to such an extent - again?????????????

Odin seems like a fine specimen of an osprey. Seems to know all the right things to do. Providing good nourishment for EJ and taking his turn at doing the housework!!!! Most of us women would kill for a partner like that! Here's to the first egg which must be due soon. Tomorrow is my guess. Will we have three eggs again - I'm sure we will! Isn't nature wonderful. You couldn't make it up! Coronation St hasn't got a look in!

Thanks for your reply Richard.....no confusion here Richard.....for me there is only the LG Ospreys!!   I haven't, as yet, looked at other Osprey webcams. There definitely was another Osprey mating with EJ.  I went through all the comments for the 9th and found that 'Soosin' also reported seeing EJ being mated by, what she thought was a ringed Osprey at  8.46pm!!??

Thanks again Claire.....I'm glad that EJ's 'TOY BOY'  is proving a better provider than OVS and with the number of matings that have taken place she may lay at least 100 eggs!!!!  'Tue love' is with us.

Thank you Claire, It's always good to read the 'run-downs' as it answers some of our questions. Knowing that your other duties are many and varied at this time it is greatly appreciated. Odin has been doing a splendid job so far and as the first mating was when he arrived on the 5th. of April should we really be expecting an egg before the tenth day after?

Good Morning LG - They mated from what I saw on April 4 so that would only be 4 times a day ... Well it sure seems more owing to the amount of times I have seen them enjoying what needs to be done :) - 10 fish in 10 days doesn't seem much at all ... Odin better get his fishing skills sorted as we know EJ gets very annoyed when the deliveries are not to order.

Hi All, I guess that Richard and Claire may be correct as they predicted a Thursday egg !!! Lets face it Richard is normally spot on with his predictions...

It's a truly glorious morning up here..endless blue sky and hardly any wind...A good day for fishing and chilling out on the nest....I hope that EJ makes the most of it and has a good fly around to stretch her wings as she is going to be sat on that nest for a long time !!!!

Maureen....to get onto the Loch Garten bloggers....

First JOIN facebook so you have a page then just type in Loch Garten into the search box, top left of the page and it will take you there.. but you will never find them if you haven't a page of your own...When you see the page come send a request to join... then when you get an email back just follow the link...

Hope this helps...Barbara

Odin is a star and long may he continue to shine.  Mating – 42 times I thought more as every time I look they are at it :) but we can safely assume they’ve truly bonded and hopefully we’ll see an egg soon.  10 fish since Saturday is wonderful news and I’m sure Odin has found a fishing source nearby judging how quickly he can bring fish in.  When I think back to how VS treated, rather mistreated, EJ and the chicks last year what I am seeing of Odin only increases my confidence.  Food is the key and if there is adequate fish brought in hopefully we will see no bullying in the nest and all chicks will fledge.

CliveT, Claire was reporting from Saturday 11th over the last weekend. Looks a lot better like that. The nest is looking good for an egg any time now. I've not seen a fish coming in yet, but I can't spend any more time on the computer. It's great to hear the news from others. Keep the night shift reports coming in Barbara Jean, thank you.

It has been quite eventful over lunch time.  Odin brought in a fish at 12:47 which EJ took and flew off returning at 12:54 with the fish!!  Odin took it from EJ and flew off at 12:55.  EJ then kept looking up, mantling her wings and squawking at 12:56 when I got a glimpse of another bird who proceeded to dive bomb over the nest.   All settled fairly quickly but I hope there aren’t many intruders about not when EJ is close to laying her eggs.  I see this has happened at Tweed Valley – usually a peaceful nest but over the past few days there has been a lot of aggression displayed with intruders which they hope has not upset their female who is expected to lay her eggs any day now.

Poor EJ . There is an odd shaped branch on the nest and she keeps moving it from one side to the other. It has a sharp section sticking up and it doesn't fit nicely anywhere. I wish she would just throw it out of the nest. It has been annoying her for days.

Another mating session about 6.14, this time bums and tails right in front of the camera......too much information kids!! So glad everything seems to be going well for the both of them, plenty of fish from Odin, and if he has found the fish farm they better watch out or they'll have no stock left. Plenty of love in the air for them both so it can't be long now before an egg. On another note, I've named the lady at Loch of the Lowes, LOLO, she has laid her 55th egg this morning.....wow.....not only that she's been with her partner 'Stressed Eric' for 15 years, what an achievement for such a great birds, well done :0) and love

Just now  there was some sort of threat to the nest. EJ stood up from the egg and was danger calling  and flapping her  wings. Odin flew in with a fish. He mantled over the fish and was  also flapping his  wings. Odin finally flew away with the fish and EJ settled back  down on the  egg.

I could hear a bird calling  very close by, but  couldn't see it . What was happening?

Congratulation EJ and Odin. Can't wait to get home to see the video. Richard - you mentioned the sponsorship for the satalite tags for this years chicks. Do you have an address where cheques can be sent. I'm sure that given the volumn of supporters/viewers and interest that this site attracts many would be happy to make a donation. I for one would be very happy to make one for the simple reason that following the story of EJ and her family has (and continues to) give me a huge amount of pleasure and it much better value for money that the TV licence!! Come on - lets get the ball rolling to ensure the chicks are all tagged this year (Sorry - seem to be counting my chicks before the eggs are even laid!!)

Hi Richard. I'm sure £3000 between all us bloggers would take about a millisecond to raise! Just say the word and give us details of where to send the money and who to make the cheque out to and mine will be straight in the post! Don't you all agree everyone?

How lovely to see dad taking his turn!!  Odin came in at 3.45pm and straight onto the egg to give EJ a break.  I just love watching them wobble over the egg.  I do hope either EJ or Odin move that stick soon, it is lying quite awkward especially when they spread their wings.

Soosin, breeding for over 20yrs. Many go for falconry purposes whilst others are used in public displays etc. They are also used for educational purposes in many schools and also for pest control. There are many outlets for them being captive bred due to it being illegal to obtain them from the wild (rightly so).

Congratulations on the first egg. Now their hard work really starts. Please set something up to make it easy for all of us to contribute towards trackers. It's the least we can do given all your hard work not only for the birds but also for our education and enjoyment. Sad though it turned out with Nethy and Deshar, it has been extremely interesting to log in and see where they went and I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that we'd love to be able to do it again this year, hopefully with a much better outcome.

Quietwoman: I’m not sure about Loch of the Lowes female laying 4 eggs in 2005 but know for definite that there were 4 chicks at Tweed Valley. Tweed Valley follow 2 nests which are known as the main and the backup. In 2005 the pair at the backup nest produced 4 chicks. They were known as the “Fab Four”, the famous chick being the youngest who they named “Errol” after Errol Flynn. He was a right wee swashbuckler and got involved in many fights most of which he instigated!! They feared for him many times as some of the beatings he took were awful but he did survive and successfully fledged along with the other 3. Tweed Valley has made a DVD about their Ospreys which includes the Fab Four.

Kate we look forward to receiving the details of us to send our cheques, from what I have read to date on the bloggs sounds as if we are all very keen to do our bit. EJ looks very content, must be because she is being so well looked after by Odin. Keep up the good work Odin and hopefully we shall have lots to celebrate. I see that the Loch of Lowes Osprey now have three eggs in the nest and are about 8 days ahead of EJ and Odin...perhaps they are on target for four, the third egg was laid this morning. Is anyone wondering what has become of old OVS? Has he been sighted?

Karen as you probably know there is a young female at Rutland called DE (05). I would really love to know if it came from the same nest as Errol.

Loch of the Lowes did have four eggs in 2005. It was not realised that there were four until quite a while after hatching. Then sadly two of them died in quick sucession so only two fledged from the nest that year. All the data for Loch of the Lowes can be found on page 33 of "Life of Ospreys". Data for Loch Garten on page 23.

In 2005 EJ laid four eggs too. That was the year when both first Red T and then Henry demonstatred their egg kicking skills so there were no Loch Garten chicks.

Congratulations to EJ and Odin, bring on more eggs in the next few days!! Finally seen a fish being brought in by Odin :0) Got to see a little bit of the egg but the stick's in the way so never got a good look. Odin was being ever so gentle when the changeover took place, he's a total gentleman. We went to see the Aberfoyle Osprey's last saturday and we got to see the type of tracking unit that would be used, we were asking if they thought about tracking there chicks this year, they said it was a bit expensive for just the one bird never mind 2 or more, anyway at the time I suggest to my boyfriend that they should get people to sponsor tracking devices for the birds to help cover the costs, so I see all the bloggers seem to be thinking along the same lines. Anyone planning on visiting Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling? They have a bird of prey section with a juvenile White Tailed Sea Eagle, not sure the history as to why it's there but what a stunning and beautiful bird, I couldn't get over the size of it, if you ever go you should make a point of going to see it, it was the highlight of the day for me although I wished I had seen it flying free in the wild. Also outside Stirling we seen Red Kites they too are amazing looking birds.

EJ just left for a wing-stretch- was back in a couple of minutes. It's scary to see that precious egg left unattended, though!

Hi Sixy - we went to Harewood once, just after they re-introduced them- it's just up the road from us- and did see one kite! I expect it's much different now! We must go again sometime, although our first love has to be the Welsh kites- such a fantastic success story, and of course it's where our very own wing-tagged kite lives! Am I right in thinking that you volunteer at Harewood? Seem to remember you (or someone) saying that last year.
