Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

...we await the second egg!

Its been a busy week here at Loch Garten, with not only the arrival of the first egg, but another intruder and even more mating!  EJ kept us all waiting with baited breath, and produced an egg on Thursday morning, with the first sighting just before midday.  The centre has been quite literally buzzing ever since, and we anticipate the laying of a second egg either later today or tomorrow!  It is great to watch EJ and Odin taking turns incubating the egg, it feels like the season is well under way, and needless to say all of us here at the centre have got our fingers and toes firmly crossed!

As if laying an egg was not enough activity for one day, EJ and Odin also had to see off an intruding osprey on Thursday as well.  This was probably a late comer looking for a mate, and Odin proved himself once more as he immediately flew to the nest to defend it and see off the intruder!

So far today Odin has brought in two fish, including a rainbow trout.  As we have come to expect from Odin, these were good sized fish, which EJ made fast work of, finishing both of them in around fifteen minutes!  Odin has also taken over incubation duty at several other points today, allowing EJ to enjoy exercise flights and even a good preen in the sunshine at the top of the camera tree!

As always...we await the next fish....and of course the next egg...

Thanks for taking time from your busy day to give us an  update!!  So far Odin is  looking like he is doing all the right things.

Rainbow trout ? He must have found the fish farm. I would have loved to have seen the  gleam in his eyes when he realized his good fortune .  Although he  did manage to  demonstrate  his fishing skills  in the muddy water that he  fished in before the fish farm.

EJ looks much more relaxed today.

Now lets hope any chicks  they have grow strong and healthy!

It sounds like Odin is really proving himself as a provider and soon to be father! Like you, I have everything crossed for them both; I can't wait to get there to see it all for myself! Until then I will have to be content with the pics and your excellent updates. Thanks.

Thank you Claire we do appreciate it when you do an update for us.

Things seem to be going really well for our osprey couple what a difference to last year!

I'm hoping to see the second egg being laid as I missed the first one... what an exciting time it is  for us all ....if only they knew how many people were following their every move they would be amazed and probably slightly red faced as well Lol...what an active couple they are to be sure!

Oh NO !!

Odin just flew in with a huge branch and dropped it on EJ. She got out from under it. But as  he was struggling with it he stepped where the  egg WAS. Now I don't see the egg. EJ flew way grumbling

Thank goodness that branch on the rear of the nest was not for this end :)

Whew I see the egg. It  was covered  with nesting material that Odin kicked up as he struggled to move the  huge branch to the edge of the nest.   When EJ flew away grumbling he just stood there looking a bit  surprised  that she was not thrilled with  his offering. How could she be happy he  had dropped it right on her head !

Hopefully the egg is fine after that episode with the "tree" that Odin brought home!

REPLY - Don't panic, the egg is fine, despite Odin bringing in the 'tree'.  Claire

Just watch Odin fly in and as usual he started to rearrange the nest around EJ - but he put some sticks on her back as she was sitting on egg - whats that all about?

2nd egg spotted at 7.13am when Odin on nest too?!  Sunlight makes it difficult to see but Odin peered down at it just as he did the first!  Yes, definitely 2!  Well done EJ and Odin, and all at LG!

Many thanks, Claire.  Good to see everything going so well.  Thanks to whoever for moving that branch!

REPLY - It was Odin or EJ who moved the branch, obviously they weren't happy with its position either! Claire

How lovely was that! I logged on this morning to see Odin sitting on two eggs. EJ came back but he decided to stay put. She was looking at him and then trying to look underneath him but still he stayed put even when she 'spoke' to him. It was a good 10 minutes before he relented. I was watching EJ late last night and thought then that the 2nd egg was imminent as she just couldn't seem to settle or get comfortable. What a clever girl. I wonder if there will be any more?

Just saw the second egg at changeover.  Then the screen refreshed and I see others have recently seen it as well.  The EJ and Odin look very impressive on the nest together.  I didn't see any fish this time, so presumably he just turned up to give EJ some time off.  I must say that in certain lights and positions I am not always absolutely certain which bird I am looking at.  Thank you to the LG team and bloggers for all the news.

My brother and I went to Roy Dennis’ talk “A Life of Ospreys” yesterday at Edinburgh Zoo.  His talk was just superb - so informative and interesting.  We were quite fortunate as before his scheduled talk, we had bumped into him at the penguin enclosure and had the opportunity to chat about Ospreys. What a lovely man he is.

Odin is  incubating the eggs again. Great the EJ can get a break. I never saw Henry, because I had not been introduced to the magical world of Ospreys when he was there. I think someone said Henry  used to help feed the chick too.  Is that correct?

Tiger

Barbara. Yes Henry did feed the chicks. Ollie the male osprey in residence at Loch Garten from 1990 to 2001 was forced to feed the chicks in 1993 when he found himself as a single father. He successfully raised two chicks on his own. We have seen a number of male ospreys feed chicks and one that feeds the female too.
