Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

All Going According To Plan

What can I tell you all, its my turn to write my first blog and do I get something exciting to tell you, no, it's all going according to plan!

However given the recent history of our nest this in itself is good news. Odin continues to bring in enough fish, despite breezy cold conditions making things difficult for him. Meanwhile EJ  continues her lonely task of keeping the eggs and herself warm and fending off the occasional intruder.

Between one and three fish a day are being brought in by Odin along with moss and a few branches, much to the annoyance of EJ who has to rearrange them. We have noticed a change in Odin in recent days, he seems much more at home, finding new places to perch other than the camera tree next to the nest. He has one perch in particular where he likes to eat his share of fish before taking them to the nest and it is perfect for viewing with a telescope from the visitor centre (thank you Odin!).

Away from the nest spring is slowly descending upon us at last, swallows, willow warblers, redstarts, cuckoos and other migrants are arriving and down by our dragonfly pond I have seen my first common lizard of the year. So all is well here at Loch Garten, we’re all looking forward to hatching in about three weeks time and having three healthy chicks to show our visitors, so if you are among those visitors please come and say hello.

Hello Ian!  Thanks for the update.  It's good to hear news of Odin's perches as we can't see any of that.

Thanks Ian, and welcome to blogland...

We are an impatient and demanding lot who ask millions of questions and expect instant answers !!! LOL...

I for one am thrilled that it's a bit boring and predictable at LG...

Remembering only a couple of years ago where we had disasters with fights and smashed eggs and NO chicks...boring is good !! Odin seems to be keeping all muggers away and is proving to be a great male this year...

So 'Cheers' to boring and peace and quiet..

Thank you Ian...when the hatching begins you will have loads of exciting reports to do!!!!!

Enjoy this relatively quiet time.

Odin is a real star and EJ deserves the undivided attention, after last year's debacle.

Thanks Soosin. Thought I might have got my terminology wrong! Should have checked BWPi myself rather than trying to look back through last year's blogs.

I should be at Loch Garten on the 21st, so am keeping my fingers crossed for an early hatch, but it will be lovely to say 'hello' to everyone and just look at Ospreys and all the other wildlife up there. Not much out of the ordinary in Bedfordshire, but Red Kites are spreading out well into Bucks and Herts, so I hope I shall soon see one here. LizH

Nice to hear from you, Ian , thanks -and you DID have something exciting to tell us. As BarbaraAnne says,  after the last couple of seasons' disasters,  'all going to plan' is exciting, and we don't mind 'boring' one bit!  And as Maureen says - EJ definately deserves the love of a good osprey! If anything should go wrong this time - I doubt it will be down to Odin.

Rosie - thanks - have a good birthday yourself!

Well Odin is first class ...the weather is not at it's best at the moment for fishing but he's a good Mate for EJ even though he seems to be overdoing the stick deliveries I'm sure he will be the model father to his offspring.

JayJay -  I'd call it a medium size fish that was delivered at about 16.07 pm . Cid said that Odin delivered a small fish at 10.45 am. So that's two fish for Sunday that I know about.

And, it's just great that  all is going to plan, Ian. I'd like it to stay that way until all 5 Ospreys (mum, dad, and juveniles) are SAFELY in Africa for our winter !!!       Jane A

Thanks for the update Ian,congrats on you first attempt-the first is always the worst! Its great to hear about the happenings we cannot see from the webcam, you say that Odin eats his share of the fish before passing it to E.J.does he take the head and give the rest to her?

Ihad a quick peek at E.J.before I came on the blog she seems very settled for the night probably dreaming of tomorrows breakfast.Weather forecast not good for tomorrow, but Im sure Odin will come up with the goods .Thanks again.

Good morning everyone.......Looks very windy today for EJ and will make it more difficult for Odin's fishing expeditions, but I am sure he will do well. Looks like Sammy/Susie squirrel is being silly again....there are nuts on his/her platform....but no, they like to do things the hard way, trying to get into the bird feeder!!!!!

Hello Ian and welcome to LG blogs. Thank you for the update. As BarbaraAnne says we are a demanding lot and some of our questions may seem a bit ignorant, so please be patient with us. I am very happy that things are quiet and peaceful this year, apart from the few 'juvenile delinquents' which Odin seems to be very capable of dealing with. He and EJ make a formidable pair. Long may it last.

10.30am.....late breakfast or early elevenses, whatever, 'our' precious Odin has just brought EJ a large fish. It couldn't have been very easy for him in all this wind. I think he is wonderful....I want to reach into the monitor to stroke his head. Mad or what?

Just discovered I have wireless signal in my hostel dorm in Chamonix, so plugged in the laptop, had a quick look at the webcam and immediately watched a good sized fish delivery! which has prompted my first ever comment after weeks of lurking! I am sure I will not be the only one to report this though. But why oh why does he have to rearrange the furniture? can't he just sit down?

Sounds windy there still, pouring with rain here though. Might be snowing up high if we're lucky.

10.35 Odin brings a brown trout I think for EH and she flies off with it in her mouth again.  Odin starts moving the furniture about and after a few fiddling abouts he settles down on the eggs.  At 11.04 Odin starts squeaking but I think there are birds flying over  and he gets a bit louder.   Must get back to work this is so addictive.

Talking to my husband just now about the reasons for the webcams  and  24hr surveillance on Bird of Preys nest all over the country and beyond and he's telling me that at Loch Garten, egg thieves tried to chop the tree down,!! in the name o the wee man, unbelievable.   I'm off to read Roy Dennis's book now. My daughter got it for Christmas and has finally brought it home, Its May day and I should be out looking for birds but its raining so I'll watch and read about them instead with my feet up a cup of coffee and a raspberry turnover. Hi Liz H - The following may be of interest

The International Ornithological Congress (IOC) announced in January this year that it was accepting the split of Osprey into 2 separate species - Eastern Osprey and Western Osprey.  Only the IOC seem to have regconised the change and Osprey continues to be treated as a single species with the previously named 4 sub-species by almost every body else - John Penhallurick (World Bird Info) additionally recognises P carolinensis 'American Osprey' (and previously also recognised P ridgwayi 'Caribbean Osprey', but subsequently re-lumped it with carolinensis).

The split put forward by IOC is based on DNA analysis of the 3 sub-species (haliaetus, carolinensis, cristatus) published in 2004 which concludes that the evidence of genetic differences between P  h haliaetus, P h carolinensis, and P h cristatus, combined with morphological characters and their distribution pattern is such that all 4 subspecies could be treated as separate species.

IOC references Christides & Boles 2008 and Wink et al 2004 to justify the splitting of (only) P cristatus, suggesting that it respects Christides & Boles' judgement, but remains unconvinced of Wink et als' 4-way split.

Aaahhhh!!!! the joys of modern birding.

In reply to Soosins comment about the nest tree, in January 1986 the tree was vandalised with a chain saw and the nest cut down. Osprey numbers were still low at the time so the nest was put back up using telegraph poles bolted in place onto the remains of the tree, the ospreys returned from migration and carried on as if nothing had happened, 23 years on and its still going strong. Ian.

LizH
Posted on Monday, 4 May 2009 at 18:23

Soosin, thanks for searching through such technical looking stuff. I bet the scientists are glad of DNA now for settling some of the differences. I saw lots of Ospreys when I was in USA, in Idahoe and Montana, my greatest luck was taking a photo of one catching a fish from a lake, but wished I'd had a really long lens! I assume the carolinensis is nothing to do with Carolina, or is it? Only did Latin for a year and then moved schools. You're so good to quote your sources, not everyone does that, but it is nice to track things down properly and to keep up with any further publications.

Thanks a lot; perhaps I might bump into you some place where Ospreys are to be seen, that would be nice. Liz H

Watched two feeds today and one last night and the smallest didn't get much to speak of.  The four at Derby seem to be doing well, though its not a live webcam and difficult to see who's getting what.  Won't be long until we're watching the same at LG.

Janeallport, don't rely on the BBC website forecast, it's always very pessimistic, particularly around the Cairngorms area. Neighbouring Carrbridge is currently making a fuss because of the effect the BBC forecasts are having on tourism (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/may/03/bbc-weather-carrbridge-scottish-highland). My family had a wonderful week based in Carrbridge last June with hardly any rain, as was often the case during my bachelor volunteering days at Loch Garten. The marvellous Ollie was the LG male then so it's good to see Odin showing similar potential. I work outside nowadays and rely on the Met Office site (http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/) for forecasts, much more realistic.

9.00am. Odin has joined EJ on the nest after she called for some time. Judging by the noise and her scanning of the sky he was being mobbed by crows/ravens. They continue to make a lot of noise but both ospreys are sitting quietly, if alertly, and showing an united front to the thugs! On our visit to Loch Garten a few weeks ago we were treated to a spectacular mobbing of Odin by about 10 ravens/crows. He coped very well. 9.09am I think the mobbing is over - Odin is rearranging the furniture. 9.11am He's just flown off. Hopefully he's gone fishing. EJ has turned the eggs and settled down to a bit of housekeeping.

Wednesday 9.10am just spent ten minutes watching both EJ (firmly on the eggs) and Odin right at the front looking into the camera - boy hes a magnificent specimen. Carrbridges assault on the Beebs weather forecasting has really gone global..Danny Fullerton from Landmark Theme park in the village complained as the rain forecasts were putting people off visiting..As Carrbridge is only 6 miles from LG it would be a similar picture..

Most people use the BBC weather bulitens to check forecasts before setting out..and they are so often wrong.

It was fabulous here in Carrbridge this morning but now its turning showery, so you will see EJ getting damp this afternoon..

The arguement is that when they say rain showers expected it oftens means we have a 90% dry day with a wee shower or two but people will think that its going to rain all day..

So if anyone is going to visit LG then do go to the website that Lamarck put up and put in Nethybridge as a search or just look in on EJ in the morning before heading out...

It's always sunny and warm in The Cairngorms !!!

EJ was food soliciting. Odin came to the nest without a fish. As he was  moving some of the large branches that has been blown to the  center of the nest she insistently  kept  food calling. She  didn't  get up to let him  sit on the eggs . He flew off hopefully to go fishing.  I guess she was letting him know if he doesn't bring a fish he can't have his turn  on the  eggs. LOL

By reading the other blog entries EJ ate at 2:15. She appeared to want another fish two hours later. Is she getting spoiled ? LOL I was reading Roy Dennis's book " A life of Ospreys" He has a lot of information on the events and tragedies in the past at the Loch Garten nest, including the love triangle with EJ, OVS and Henry. I am especially grateful so far this year it has been calm and predictable. There is also a great picture of the Center in his book. I sure wish I could see it. But I am in the USA

It looks like Odin has put in a new carpet of greenery and red moss. He seems to love bringing nesting material. :)
