Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Odin delivers the fish…come wind, rain or shine!

The weather this week at Loch Garten could best be described as inclement! Wind has been an ever-present factor throughout the week, with sunshine and showers in more or less equal amounts, and even snow on the high tops!

However, Odin has not let this faze him, bringing back two fish on Thursday, three yesterday (although he ate the first small one himself!) and one already today! This is a very impressive total, as fishing will not have been easy - the high winds make the surface of the water choppy and therefore more difficult for the osprey to spot the fish, whilst the added combination of the current cold temperatures causes the fish to go deeper in the water. So Odin continues to live up to his name!

EJ has been experiencing some long incubation stints, as Odin has often had to spend a good few hours away from the nest catching the fish. She has experienced the brunt of the weather this past week, keeping a firm seat on the nest no matter what. Thankfully, she has not had to endure anything quite as severe as the thunderstorm that we experienced last year the week before the first egg hatched! We are more than half way through the incubation period now, so we are all getting very excited here at the Centre!

We have had a couple of singleton osprey fly past the nest in the past couple of days, but Odin and EJ have given them short shrift, and sent them on their way. There have been several crows in the area too, but Odin has obviously made an impression, as one that was sitting on the camera tree at 7.45 this morning took flight as soon as it saw Odin return!

We await the next fish...

Thanks for the update Claire I have watched poor EJ sitting in the terrible weather you have been having.  She is lucky to have Odin as a mate as he is really working so hard to catch fish for her and himself.  Hang on in there EJ and Odin the weather has to get better for you.

It's great to hear that Odin is managing to fish even in this inclement weather, good luck to him. The time will soon pass for the arrival of the 1st chick & he seems to be a graet provider. Take care all

Thanks for the update Claire!! Especially the fish count. If EJ and Odin have enough to eat they will survive the  bad weather. It is great to see how well he provides fish and protects the nest from intruders. 2 more weeks and we will be glued to the computer waiting  for the  first  chick to hatch. :)  I'll guess the  first  chick is a male on the 23 rd.

Thanks for the update Claire, have been out for most of the day and was wondering about the intruders and the noisy crows which were around the nest last night.  Glad the weather has settled down a bit.   They do have a lot to put up with and I admire their dedication! It is also lovely to get all the updates from the centre, thank you!!

Thanks David Anderson for your answer to my query and the reasons why the male takes the head. Thanks to Claire for a very comprehensive report and update on fish, conditions and intruders. It's nice to get the view from the other side of the camera.

Janeallport hope you had a good days hike Iwill look for Odin bringing fish but you know I always just miss the moment!! J.

Just got back from a full days hiking and must get back to my friend down stairs. She's read all the blogs with great gusto and is rapidly becoming an Osprey fan. How sensible of her !     Jane

It's great to see a male partner who can be worthy of the nest and bring in a good flow of food in fair weather or foul. Let's hope he can keep it up when the eggs hatch and provide enough to fledge three chicks. The last one to be able to do that, as I remember, was Henry.

There must be an intruder near the nest. Odin is on the eggs and not getting up . EJ came flying in and stood guard at the edge of the nest. Both were quickly looking around as if there was another bird nearby. Ej flew off in the direction they were watching and returned. Now I hear a crow very close . EJ is still standing guard and not insisting  Odin get up from the eggs .  EJ and Odin make a great team !!.

EJ is now telling Odin the danger has passed and I will take over. He is firmly planted on the eggs and doesn't appear to have any intentions of   moving LOL. Maybe  he will incubate them tonight

Thanks for the update on the weeks events, Claire - and thanks also to David for explaining why the male  osprey eats the head of the fish himself. Being hungry himself is  fairly obvious but eating it to make sure the fish is dead and therefore not a threat to the eggs is something I hadn't heard of before - clever stuff isn't it?

Seems the weather is a little better now - hope it continues!

Janeallport I hope you do not have to rely on me for fish up dates. I was glued to the screen determined to see the next fish & what happened?Had to leave the roomfor 5mins & when I returned who should be sitting on the nest-yes you guessed right it was Odin !! I think I am jinxed.E J gone for about 30 mins and on return stood at the edge of the nest for a couple of mins then took off again she did a full circle ,cos I saw her pass in front of the camera ,and return again. Sound of crows above ,E Jand Odin formed a united front until they disappeared. Sorry I didn't see the fish so I hope somebody else did. Goodnight.

Does anyone know at what stage of incubation can the parent birds feel the  chicks moving in the eggs?  For humans it is a little over half way through the pregnancy . Around 5 & 1/2 months

Thank you, Claire, for that informative and interesting report. After all the nail-biting anxiety last year it's good to know that EJ is being well cared for. 10.28...It's lovely to check around all the nestcams this morning and wee all the birds basking in the sunshine...

EJ looks fabulous and relieved to be dry for once..The Goshawk looks contented...The webcam wasn't blown of the tree in L-O-Lowes thank goodness and even the two wonderful Eagle chicks in the Ukraine seem to have doubled in size the last few days !!

Plus, a Black Stork is sitting on the nest there...Bonus..

I must say that I think the webcams are one of the great bonuses of technology. I have learnt such a lot about the raptors over the last 2 or 3 years and it has been a priviledge to have the opportunity to study them first hand.

It's also a bonus this morning to be able to watch them without feeling seasick as the wind has died down.....!!!

Aquestion for the team...

Do you suspect that some of the visits of other Ospreys to the nest are earlier chicks now heading home to breed for the first time ??? Have any leg rings been noticed..

I imagine that when they return for the first time they would instinctively go to their birth nest ??? Am I correct in my thinking ??

REPLY - We don't tend to get to see the leg rings as they are not close enough to the nest to be on camera. There will always be a number of singleton birds in the area, looking for a mate or for a nest to take over. Ospreys often return to 30 - 50 kms of where they fledged from to breed, but not usually to the same nest. Debbie.

16.27 Few chirrups, wing-stretch, flight of about 30 seconds, now settled comfortably on eggs again. Please don't laugh, but I wonder whether these short breaks are to 'answer a call of nature', thus avoiding douling the nest?

REPLY - Both Odin and EJ will take short exercise flights when incubating for some time. In EJ's case this helps to maintain strong muscles. Debbie.

I have been back from Wales for a day now and it has taken me that time to catch up on the blogs. Thanks everyone for the detailed information. Visited the Glaslyn site in Wales but the live camera was down as the transmitter had been struck by lightning and they were awaiting a replacement. Nest is about a mile from the hide so difficult to see anything even through the telescopes. I saw a buzzard in a tree near to the cottage where I was staying. It flew from one tree to another while I was out walking Hamish the cocker spaniel. Also heard owls at night near the cottage.

Odin just brought in a large fish. How nice to see the sun shining and the wind light! Buzzards are regularly sighted in south Wales and could almost be called common. A BTO volunteer I talk to regularly says we have a pair breeding not far from Cardiff city centre - but he won't say where. I've certainly seen them soaring above the Millennium Stadium and see them in Bute Park which forms a green corridor from Cardiff city centre all the way up the Taff vale. I've had sightings 3 years running of a bird with only one eye which seems to be surviving well despite the disability. The peregrines are back on the City Hall clock tower too.

Is it just me, or do other bloggers think that there is more annoying EJ than just other birds? to me, her preening now seems to be more agressive and prolonged than I would normally expect, with lots of small white downy feathers being sent flying in the process. I wonder if the poor girl is now having to deal with an infestation of lice? She certainly is the warmest spot in the nest, which would draw them to her. Perhaps her longer than usual absence from the nest was to bathe, sand bathe or do whatever ospreys do to rid themselves of these annoying pests? she doesn't seem interested at all in the down feathers she dislodges from herself, so I don't think she's collecting down for the nest cup. Thgere have been a few questions about 'comfort breaks' for EJ. Newer viewers are in for a real treat later in the season! ;-)) As soon as they are able, the youngsters will back up to the rim of the nest and eject their droppings clear of the nest. It's not long before their aim gets quite good. Last year the camera seemed to be the main target!!!

Phil I also heard the very loud jet but I think what you saw was not the jet flying lower than the nest but the shadow of it on the ground as it went over. It was very sunny at the time. As you say though, they are not at all startled by them and take them in their "stride" - if you are lucky enough to hear them coming it's not so bad but they can catch you unawares and scare the life out of you. It does look a lovely day up there in LG. It's not bad down here in Surrey but I wish the wind would go away (not up to LG of course!). Just love listening to all the other birds in the background - "Mr Chaffinch" definitely the loudest! x

Odin just brought a medium size fish for EJ. I think he "teases" her with the meal. LOL I heard her food soliciting. Then an Osprey flew low over the nest in front of the camera. It sat on the nest for a few seconds . Maybe someone at the center can check the video footage at the time of this entry and see the leg ring. It looked quite at home landing on the nest. Maybe OVS? It looked at bit like him.

I will insist on using the clock which is set on 24 hours and think it's set on 12, result? Wrong time given yet again! So sorry, it wasn't 13.37 as you can all guess. It's the excitement of seeing Odin come in with all these lovely fish for EJ!

Maureen McCann: if you would like to see some storks this a link to a page of links! My favourites are at Vetschau in Germany http://www.bocianyonline.pl/kamery_en.html There should be some black storks in Estonia but I haven't seen any this year http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/2415 Regarding the jets - we used to ski at The Lecht just around the corner from Loch garten and have looked down on a halifax (I think) as it flew past. When the jets raced down the valley it was something to look at the beginners' tow and see all the skiers sitting down by it! Back to ospreys - is EJ taking the opportunity to moult whilst incubating like the New Forest Goshawk? If so when do the males moult?

8.25pm . Odin just arrived with EJ's supper - she's been calling for some time! Didn't look very big, think it was headless but not a good view. EJ grabbed it and flew off, Odin settled straight down onto eggs. Thanks to all for reporting today's happenings-still can't get the video on work computer, which is really annoying as I miss all the fun!

Glad to read of today's comings and goings. I was unable to get to the pc despite being off today, housework had to win. Soosin we had our first swifts today here in Lenzie. I think there were 4 but not sure. Good to know that Odin is providing well for our EJ. Till tomorrow.......

Maggie, male osperey moult gradually over our winter period, when they are somewhere in Africa. Does anyone know if any of the Goshawk's eggs have hatched yet? Every time I see them one is sitting tight.

8.50 on a sunny breezy day EJ sits squeaking half heartedly. Then at 9.15 Odin arrives fishless and EJ flies off. I thought I'd got it wrong but it was Odin who arrived and EJ who flew off so maybe she has been fed this morning.

Maggie, thanks for stork link. Have been watching Estonia but he is rarely on his nest! Have you noticed how spring has just arrived at the white tailed eagle nest. Good to see so many fish arriving for EJ - remember how OVS kept us all waiting last year.

Mrs Goshawk doing a lot of furniture moving at the moment - Odin must have had a word.

Mrs G has the fidgets. I suppose when you have had nice smooth eggs under you for weeks and then they start wriggling about and tickling it must be uncomfortable. Weather forecast for next few days isn't good ...

Just popped over (again!) to the Goshawks to see if I could see any little furry balls but mum is spread right across the nest.  I have to say her eyes are amazing and now that she's facing right on to the camera they are quite "scary" - a much larger version of a sparrowhawk's  brilliant eyes.  It's a bit like a camera shutter when she blinks!! Wonderful. However I never linger very long on her nest as I like to see the comings and goings at LG which is probably why I'm finding it difficult at the moment to spot a furry ball!! x

Thanks everyone for all the updates :) I am still having computer problems and have also been laid up with a broken big toe, so have been unable to watch very much, as putting your foot up, isn't exactly possible while watching webcams on a computer.

So glad to hear EJ is being so well fed and that sounds as if the chicks will be well looked after by Dad this year!

First? osprey chick in the UK possibly, arrived this morning at Glaslyn Wales so we are off!!!!

Quietwoman - I have always thought of the goshawks as being your family, ( especially after you told us of your past history with these lovely birds ) so I must thank you for your updates. I have been lucky and seen the chicks and am hoping I will catch them being fed. Also glad to see EJ has been fed. It does seem a long time to wait if she hasn't been fed since 8.25pm yesterday. It looks perfect fishing weather.

Another large fish from Odin this afternoon, at 3.55. I've made sure I have the time right today!! He does look after his woman well, doesn't he? I am so enjoying this blog, reading about the parts I miss in the evening and early morning, I thank you all for your parts in it.

It's 15.55 and Odin just did the most perfect landing with a lovely fish for EJ after flying around the nest for a while and guageing the wind.  It was like a helicopter coming in for a tricky landing on the weeniest helipad!  Well done Odin!  Enjoy your fish EJ :o) x

Thank you Maureen McCann for that snippet of Goshawk news. So I was right first time! It is difficult making out what's white feather and what is white shell. I thought our view was going to be even more obscured when the fresh green nest material was being arranged. EJ seems to be well fed. Isn't it good to see after all her trials last year? I don't think I have heard once, this year, that harsh desperate calling that was so heartbreaking last season.
