Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Gold for Garten...

2009 is the Golden, 50th Anniversary of osprey viewing at Loch Garten.

It was back in 1959, on 12th June, after the eggs had hatched, that George Waterston, the then Director of RSPB in Scotland, took the very brave, but above all, visionary decision to go-public with the Loch Garten ospreys.  Such was the already developing curiosity and interest in the ospreys' return, with people clamouring to see them, that the first osprey viewing initiative in UK was begun.  In that first season, over 14,000 people visited the site in just three months.

What proved to be a winning formula with the viewing public back then in 1959, is still a winning formula today.  It began as an innovative model of sustainable wildlife interpretation, the first of its kind, and is now renowned and emulated the world over.  Fifty years on, it still attracts visitors in the thousands, 35,000+ each year between April and end of August and since it all began, collectively over two million people have visited the Loch Garten Osprey Centre.

The first "Osprey Centre" 1959. Photo by D.Robinson

Of course, it wasn't a "Centre" then, as the picture shows; the very first viewing facility was just an old caravan, but hey, who cared?  The ospreys were what people had come to see.  In the years since, there has been immeasurable change in some ways, to the very fabric of the facilities for example, but in other ways there hasn't.

We are still doing today, what we started doing 50 years ago, only we'd like to think better and using modern technology with which to do it.  Basically, continuing to bring people close to these spectacular and special birds, enthusing and inspiring people to take an interest in them, other wildlife and the environment. For many, a visit to the Osprey Centre, often acts as a springboard for what then becomes thereafter, an interest, a passion and a life-long interest in ospreys, birds and other wildlife.

Anyway, we plan to mark the passing of this milestone, on Saturday 13 June 2009 and we would be delighted if you would visit us.  It will be free-entry to the Osprey Centre that day and we hope that as many people as possible will join us to share this milestone year.  Hatching is due this coming weekend and so by mid-June the osprey chicks will be well grown and large enough to be readily seen on the nest, so it is a good time to visit.  Our guest of Honour will be Frank Hamilton, former Director of RSPB Scotland.

In commemoration of this Golden Anniversary, we plan to attach a gold fish, (that's a fish made of "gold", not a goldfish!) to the Osprey Centre sign here at Loch Garten.  Join us if you can, but in particular, we are looking for someone to unveil (attach, actually) the golden fish to our sign - and that could be you!  We would like you to tell us, in no more than 50 words (appropriately), What the Loch Garten osprey story means to you.

Send your entries to; LochGartenOspreystory@rspb.org.uk The closing date/time for receipt of entries is Monday 1st June at 5pm.

What are considered to be the best three will be chosen - those that capture our imagination most.  Of these, one outright winner will be chosen and will be contacted by e-mail and invited to join us on 13th June.  If that person cannot do so, then we will then contact the person in second place. The winner will be notified by e-mail by Friday 5th June.  The winner will win a Deluxe Room, Dinner Bed and Breakfast, for 2 people at The Boat Hotel, www.boathotel.co.uk in nearby Boat of Garten, for one night, Saturday 13th June.  All travel costs to be at the winner's own expense.

We hope that a selection of entries will form part of a temporary display in the Osprey Centre. Please refer to our website for the terms and conditions  http://www.rspb.org.uk/help/terms.asp

We look forward to receiving your entries and hopefully, seeing you on the day.  We hope osprey enthusiasts, past, present and future will come along, to see EJ, Odin and Family, to meet the team and join us in celebrating this amazing milestone.  We look forward to meeting you.

Just a reminder:  -  Osprey tagging 2009 - How you can help.
For a further year, we would like to continue to build on the knowledge gained about osprey migration, by fitting tags to two of the Loch Garten osprey chicks in 2009.  EJ and Odin currently have three eggs which we are hopeful will hatch in two weeks time. All being well, and assuming successful hatching, later this summer, we hope to be able to tag two chicks, the largest two, if we get a brood of three.

So far, Odin is proving to be a very able and competent male osprey and an excellent provider of fish for EJ and hopefully, for her brood to come - something last year's male, VS, father of Deshar and Nethy, was not!

We are hopeful therefore, that the young ospreys will grow big and strong during the summer and set off in the best of condition and fully resourced for their testing first migration, in a way that last year's young were possibly not.  In order to do so, we need to raise £4,500 for tagging and the initial on-going data download costs, which is where you can help us.

If you have been fascinated by following the fortunes of tagged ospreys and would like to help us do it all again and to continue to build on the knowledge gained so far, you can make a donation online. Many thanks.

I am obliged to say that, if we are fortunate enough to raise over the amount required for the continuation of this project, then we will allocate that money to other osprey and general conservation work here at Abernethy/Loch Garten.

For those of you who feel able to contribute to this project, many thanks in advance for your help. It is much appreciated.

Thanks. -- Richard

Congrations on 50 years for Loch Garten.  I do hope Richard that enough money will be raised for the satellite tagging.  Although the unfolding stories about Deshar and Nethy upset all of us, such a lot will have learned.

Thanks for nice reading Richard! I'm not able to visit you :( living too far from LG. I hope you will have a nice, nice celebration ...and 50 MORE YEARS to come after that. I'm might stubborn about this "tagging-thing", so no donation. But I will  instead make a donation ---> support your work at Abernethy. HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ...little early :))

Happy Anniversary. I'm afraid I live a little far away to make it but will be with you in spirit.

I'm sure the day will be a great success.

I have not long ago finished reading the book "The Scottish Osprey's" by Phillip Brown about those early years and the decision in 1959 to allow the public to view the birds. It is fascinating reading and those early conditions for the people watching over the eggs are not to be envied!.

I'm happy to donate to the Osprey tracking, but I'm unlikely to be able to attend the Golden Anniversary which is so disaooointing for me. I remember Frank Hamilton and the first public viewing from Loch Garten!!! Yes, Aged!! I was looking back at the archives and remembering David Gascoignes great detailed reports and a few other names rang bells, too. Burnie who blogged with limericks Leicester Lass and gsnowey. Have we heard from them this year?

Happy Anniversary. I was at Loch Garten last year around the 21st June but unfortunately wont be able to make it this year. Have seen the 2 chicks at Loch of the Lowes and the smallest one is tiny being less than a day old. Having watched the baby Goshawks in the New Forest, Choughs on Anglesey, Peregrine Falcons in Pennsylvania, Storks in Poland and Portugal and White Tailed Eagles in Estonia, I am just looking forward to EJ and Odins offspring.

Thanks for your report David and Congratulations to all at Loch Garten. Like GaryS and quietwoman I will be unable to attend so I will not be submitting my 'Autobiography'!!!!! quitewoman I too have been wondering where 'twitters' you mentioned are. SIXY has also been very quiet, maybe she is on holiday. I had an absolute treat this morning: I saw the last Osprey 'baby', at Loch of Lowes, hatching at 8am. It is the first time I have ever seen it happening live.....Walt Disney has nothing on this!!!!

Lucky again! Just sat down with my cuppa and there's Odin with the morning fish delivery - a good size too! I haven't managed to read all the comments I've missed yet so that's something else to look forward to. Very sad about the loss of the 2 babies, the weather has been terrible and it's the way of things but still sad. Happy Anniversary LG! What an achievement. A big THANK YOU too to all those wonderful volunteers who've helped make this happen.

07.50 Logged on in time to see Odin present EJ with a fish. She seemed to be giving him instructions on how to incubate the eggs. When she seemed satisfied that he'd taken it all in, she picked up the fish and left. Dad then looked around for a few moments, rearranged the eggs then settled gently on them. About 15 minutes later a flock of geese seemed to pass over, closely watched by Odin.

Hello Long Island, New York 6th Graders. I asked exactly the same question about the size of the nest when I visited Loch Garten a few weeks ago. One of the volunteers told me the diameter is about the same as the width of a double bed - so 4ft 6in to 5 ft. It makes it much easier to get the hang of just how big these lovely bird are if you imagine a double bed don't you think? It also makes JaneA's idea of Odin bringing in "cushions" of moss very appealing. Perhaps someone else can tell you the length of the eggs. I'd like to know too! Keep watching. Chicks very soon!

How wonderful! 50 years and I've only recently discovered it all. My thoughts will be with all at LG on that special Saturday. I will be making a donation shortly and wish it could be more but as my employer keeps telling us 'Every little helps'. EJ had a BIG breakfast fish at 07.53 this morning and was very excited about it . Didn't take her too long to scoff it though, she was back on the nest at 08.26 and good as gold Odin surrendered the eggs and left. Off out for the day now.

Re: the size of the eggs, they measure 62 x 46 mm (roughly 2.5" x 1.8") and weigh 72 g (2.5 oz). The weight is as much as a really big chicken's egg.

I'm so pleased you saw the Loch of the Lowes chick hatch, Maureen McCann. I watched Nethy hatch last year (still hoping!). You feel like helping, the little scraps have such a struggle. I've been lucky enough to see Pied Flycatcher hatch, too and they are minute, Not as large as my little finger. EJ looks rather smug and selfsatisfied this morning. When I logged on she was sitting quietly on the nest, went to walk the dog and do a few chores and when I returned, there was Odin calmly brooding. It's good to see the sun shining on all the nests at the moment. Hasn't the Gos done a good job of refurbishing the nest after the disaster?

Apology to Richard for calling him David. Questions..... 1. Why are EJ and Odin's chicks last to hatch, when others have? 2. Is it biological or geographical?
Valc
Posted on Thursday, 21 May 2009 at 11:27
Odin calling a lot for EJ. He then flew off leaving the eggs! He returned shortly and managed to step on an egg as he was considering snuggling down on them. EJ returned quite unconcerned and he flew off again! Maureen, the Loch of the Lowes Ospreys returned from Africa first and mated and laid eggs before EJ and Odin. That is why their eggs have hatched first.

I remember coming to Loch Garten as a small child - it must have been either 1959 or 1960, and seeing the ospreys. I would have been about age 7 at the time and my aunt had a house at Docharn, (just outside Boat of Garten) which we holidayed in every summer. The area holds a very special place in my heart, as do the Ospreys at Loch Garten. I've visited 2 or 3 times every year for the past 4 or 5 years. I've been enjoying reading the diary every day, and keeping an eye on the webcam. I'm heading to Boat of Garten on Monday for a few days and will be visiting you all at LG - and hoping to see one or two of the eggs hatched over the course of the week, fingers crossed! Thanks to the team at LG for all your helpful information.

19.00 pm. Oh, I thought Odin had left the nest after feeding EJ to fish for himself. He gave a couple of gentle peeps (he must have seen EJ) and left the nest. EJ ten or twenty seconds later flew up to the nest and brooded. That, I thought, was that - but no – he’s just, a couple of minutes later, brought in a scarlet throw for EJ’s approval and most definitely asked her for her opinion with several quite peeps before flying off again.

7.00 pm just had a delivery of red moss. Bit of chat together and then Odin flew off again. Goshawk chicks being fed. Congratulations on 50th year, will visit in August and, no doubt, add to profits by shopping. Will shortly make contribution to tagging fund as, on balance, I think the indirect advantage to protection is worthwhile. Thank you to all contributors to blog and all LG team. I am a constant reader. One of my colleagues recently referred to the ospreys as "your birds." I have them on in the background at work for quick checkups, but no sound allowed in the office or classroom.

Congrats on 50 years at Loch Garten, and many many thanks to the fantastic team at LG and all who work to protect these wonderful birds and all the wildlife large and small. I have been following daily EJ an Odin's antics and would just echo some of the sentiments of other bloggers. Yes EJ is looking far healthier and fitter than last year. I have been watching how content she appears on the nest and it looks from the size of her crop tonight that she has had good supper. Was watching the Lough of the Lowes osprays earlier. mum had delivery of a huge fish which she ate almost all herself and the little one did not appear to be getting much. Had to leave before she finished feeding so am hoping she gave it some more as it seems a strong and healthy chick. A big thank you to all the bloggers for all the valuble info and especially the fish deliverys. I keep missing Odin delivering which is so annoying as sometimes I have just turned my back for a few seconds and when I look again Odin is on the nest and EJ has gone to have her meal. I expect this time next week we will all be glued to the nest. Lets hope it will be less stressful than last year for all concerned and especially for EJ who had to work so hard to raise the chicks practically single handed. She really does deserve a more attentive partner this year. Odin has so far been doing a fantastic job.

I first visited the centre when I was 15 - 43 years ago. I remember it vividly being so interesting and well managed by the staff. Of course I have been back since then many times and hope to manage a visit very soon too. I am lucky I live not too far away in Aberdeenshire. I am addicted to watching the webcam, how fortunate we all are to be able to watch 24-7 what is going on in the nest. Who needs a tv these days. Thanks to everyone for their updates, I so enjoy reading through all the comments.

Congratulations to all involved at LG ( both past and present). Our first visit to LG was in the mid 1970's when we never visulized that one day we would be able to sit at home and watch these beautiful birds on our computer, but nothing compares with seeing them in reality. Richard, we have happily made our donation to the tracking fund and hope everything continues to a successful and happy conclusion this year. Thank you to all the bloggers for the fish delivery reports,as we often seem to miss them arriving. Hope the weather is fine before the eggs hatch.

Odin came to the nest to take his turn on the eggs, but EJ would not get up. He stayed for about 10 minutes and then flew off. At one point he was so close to her their tails were crossed but she refused to move. I wonder if the chick in the first egg has started to peck at the shell to get out.

This is strange. Odin brought a large fish for EJ. As he landed on the nest an intruder was flying over the nest. I could see the shadow of the wings. He did some loud alarm calling and wing flapping. EJ didn't get up to take the fish. Then Odin flew away with it.

Odin just brought in a fish but EJ sat tight. He then called and postured, watching the sky. I briefly saw a large bird in the background (another osprey?) and a shadow passed over the nest a few times. Odin then took the fish - to the camera tree? - leaving EJ on the eggs, quietly preening and seemingly unconcerned about the fish. Does she know something we don't?

Odin is back on the nest and the other osprey landed too. This looks like a concerted effort on its part! It took off and was closely followed by Odin - who still has the (partially eaten) fish. EJ is sitting tight. I'VE JUST SEEN A CHICK!! Odin returned with the fish and EJ got up to show him. Great excitement in my house - we're whooping with joy.

Has the first chick hatched?? Thought I seen something move on the nest but maybe it's my eyes are playing tricks. Aberfoyle opsrey's are having a bad year by the sound of things, eggs where kicked out the nest a few weeks ago by the male and no new clutches have been laid :-(

Friday is very windy but bright at LG. I’m grateful for no rain (so far) ‘cos it meant that EJ got a breakfast fish. I didn’t see it but at 0900 am Odin was standing in the nest seeing off an intruder with a decent sized fish in his talons. EJ gave the fish a cursory glance as if to say ‘My breakfast was much bigger than that!’ and was quite nonchalant when Odin, in a quiet moment, flew off with it to eat elsewhere. He’s been seeing off the same intruding Osprey since he finished his meal. And then, and then, AND THEN ! EJ stood up and oh, beautiful to behold, was the tiniest most vulnerable little chick. Congratulations EJ and Odin. EJ called for Odin and he came to see his first offspring. Jane A

9.37am, EJ left eggs to eat on nest, thought, thats odd, hen realised one of the eggs was a chick! Anyone seen it earlier? Good to be back with access. Timed Glaslyn well, Wednesday, saw dad fly off through the scope, about all I could see through the scope though. but their first had hatched that morning (9.11am) Wednesday and she had just ignored his fish, not wanting to leave the chick. She obliging let me see it via the camera. Yesterday saw EJ pecking at a ? piece of bark and apparently thowing bits on her back. anyone know what that was about? Thanks by the way for the info on BBC iplayer, I lost track of who it was, hadn't known about that, downloaded the osprey film to watch while away. Congrats on the 50th! Pamela

Congratulations to EJ and Odin on the birth of their 1st chick. Received an email this morning re chick and immediately logged on. Also saw intruder osprey land on the nest while Odin and EJ were there. Did not notice any rings on intruding bird but it was all very fast and he soon flew away pursued by Odin. The funny thing was that EJ did not make much of a fuss as if she knew the intruder. Then came the wonderful sight of the chick as EJ moved away from her brood for a few minutes. It is all quite emotional after watching the build up to this moment from the 1st arrival of EJ. Great stuff.

Yes I too saw the new chick earlier this morning and absolute delight. I did wonder why EJ wouldnt take the fish and it was obvious she was not going to risk exposing the new baby so sat tight whilst the intruder was in the vicinity. Is the next baby due to hatch on Sunday?  I live in Inverness so will visit next week. I am addicted........

Thank you to the devoted staff LG!

Wow but this other osprey is persistent!  EJ has just had to see it off again.  I wouldn't want to mess with her now she's got a chick.

Is that Odin I can hear calling above her?  Judging by the way she's calmed down, and changed her call, I'd say he's come to her aid.

Well, I’ve been using 200% zoom on my ‘live streaming video’page for general viewing of the nest but since this morning I’m using the full 400% . Tiny heads can be hard to see! I have what I call a ‘Book of Abundance’ in which I write things like : when the swifts first arrive in Horfield, when I first see a honey bee or a bumble bee of the new season,  and (most importantly) any compliments anyone hands me and then, in dark moments when I need a ‘lift’ I open it and read some of it.Today I’m making a new entry entitled ‘Osprey Diary 2009’ and I shall write the wondrous events I’ve seen and will see at LG – forgive me if I don’t write any negative ones (this book is intended to cheer me up, after all). It’s a very special entry indeed for me. My first Osprey chick (and counting).    EJ’s calling !   Jane

11.15am... Oh Thank you so much Loch Garten Bloggers and Wee Jeannie for telling me the news of the newly arrived Osprey chick.... I clicked on at 11.10 to see EJ on the clutch keeping them sheltered from the wind and Odin walking around the nest as pleased as punch at becoming a dad....They were clearly chatting to each other...he telling her how very proud he was and Ej replying ' Yes, that's fine but can you go off to the supermarket and get me some fish please' which he has just done....Wonderful.....hope he brings her back some flowers also...in a birdy sort of way....Sphagnum would be just fine and dandy.... Can't wait to see the baby...hope she hasn't stood up whilst I am typing this !!! Barbara

Just in case anyone is interested. Seems to be holding it's little head up !! Wow. At the bottom of the page, patriciat, on the Right side you should notice I.E. s round ball indication the internet and indeed the word Internet. Then further right a pale grey 'lock' and to the right of that you should see the 'zoom' - a magnifying glass and (in your case I would almost certainly think ) 100% showing. Nearly 15.00 pm. There has been a long period of quiet calm now. EJ alternatively preening (as much as she can ‘sitting down’) and fidgeting. I think all the hanging around Odin did early, (that I personally found so frustrating ‘cos I didn’t realise the chick would be perfectly fine for quite a few hours without fish) was because the proud dad simply wanted one more look at his chick! And why not. If any of you have read the Mull Sea Eagle blogs – The Home Coming – I get a lump in my throat just remembering that wait on the beach  - birds obviously have emotions. EJ and Odin make a spectacular pair and my heart is singing at every brief sight of the little chick. When will he/she be named?  Jane A

FIRST BABY MEAL AT 16.11PM. An excited EJ saw Odin flying towards the nest with a talon full of a large fish. Hooray. Now he’s really taking a close look at baby OE and you can almost discern a broad grin on his beak. EJ eating the fish in the nest and oh, oh, oh, choosing the smallest most tender morsels of fish and gently feeding that tiny beak, I’m believing David’s expertise that baby two won’t be arriving tomorrow ‘cos I’m out all day (after a quick ‘look in’ OF COURSE) hiking in the Cotswolds – won’t be able to look in then until the evening.  What a high to go to work on !!!!!!! I guess I was right it was a chick that I saw at about (6 AM UK time). For anyone interested the  chick hatching was  in the front of EJ breast on the  left side as I look at the screen. What I saw was something grey wiggling from the the top  of egg.

Odin just brought a fish and didn't  even eat the head to kill it. EJ grabbed it and ate  the  entire head before she  moved closer to  feed the chick. A flopping fish could hurt the  chick or eggs.  Odin stood next the the chick and eggs the entire  time she was eating the head. He  kept looking back and forth  between her and the  chick as she was eating as if to say " It is dead now bring it  over here and  feed this hungry chick"! LOL Then  he watched as she fed the the  little wobbly head. She  had to keep moving  her  beak with the fish morsel to connect  with the  chick's beak. After the chick had eaten  several bites he flew away.

Just coming to the end of a week's holiday in West Wales.  It was supposed to be a"get-away-from-it-all"week, but I had to bring my lap-top to keep in touch, didn't I?  My husband is very understanding! It's been another grey, cold, drizzly day,so imagine my delight on switching on at about 16.55 to find mum gently feeding little one - he or she of the wibbly-wobbly head.  Reading earlier reports, it looks like this was a big meal; they both appeared to have had enough by 17.03, when EJ suddenly decided it was time to brood again.  It seemed to me there was still some fish left.

The instructions for zooming don't seem to apply to my computer; right-clicking on the picture gives a menu, but everything apart from 'full page' is greyed out. There's no symbols as described earlier on my page.  Can anyone help, please?  I'm on AOL, if  that is relevant.

She is a strange one that EJ. Twice Odin has delivered a fish (on request?) and twice she has just sat there and not gotten up to eat. So twice Odin has just taken it away again. I assume he can't read her mind. :-)

Of course, immediately he leaves, EJ starts (actually continues) calling. Five minutes later and here Odin comes again! He seemed to have been waiting in a tree behind and below the nest. Oh oh, not much left of the fish, and now she wants it! She's up eating it, #1 seems to be stuck in half an egg shell, and Odin is having a look! In fact he's blocking the camera view. What a family! EJ has decided there is enough left to share with #1 who is no longer wearing half an egg shell and Odin had kindly stepped to the side a little so we can see. I think supper is over, EJ is settling down, and Odin is off.

Dusk is deepening. The cuckoo is calling. And most of a fish lies ready in the nest for a night or early morning feed. I’m waiting for the infrared camera to turn itself on. Contented quiet reigns in the nest. EJ is actually having 40 winks and I’m sure the chick is snoring soundly under mum’s comforting and protecting feathers. 22.12 and the camera has decided it’s time for a different mode. A truly wonderful day. I’m off for a bath and bed wishing our Osprey family sweet dreams. Good night Loch Garten. Jane A
