Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Sunrise Surprise

Don't know if any of you have noticed but we seem to have a chick on the nest!!! Of course you've noticed! How brilliant is this! We got our first sight of the chick at 5:50 am when EJ stood up to reveal the (time for a cliche here) little bundle of joy. I don't really think it needs to be said but we are all absolutely delighted here at the centre. There is a real buzz about the place today, everyone is walking around with big smiles on their faces (we of course always have smiles on our faces, but they are just a little bit bigger today), its amazing the effect new life can have on you.

You would think that a chick hatching would be enough for EJ to contend with, but she has also had to deal with intruding ospreys on two separate occasions. Both of these however were dealt with effectively, especially on the second occasion where we witnessed Odin storming in to chase the intruder away, leaving the it in no doubt as to who was in charge of the nest. With the intruders dealt with Odin got down to the business of providing the chick with his first meal, and as we have come to expect from Odin, he duly delivered. At around 4 o'clock he brought in a whopper, you've got to wonder if he can do no wrong! EJ then wasted no time in giving the chick its first meal, it was a great sight and one of those moments which made us realise just how lucky we are to work in such a wonderful place.

So what better a time to come and visit the centre than a bank holiday weekend when more chicks are due to hatch! If any of you are thinking of coming down then come and say hello, we'll be the people with the huge smiles on our faces.

Fantastic news.  I have yet to see the "bundle of joy" but heard about it on another forum earlier.  And all sounds like a very promising start with Odin providing to his normal high standards that we have come to expect of him.

Dear LG. I'm sure everyone will inundate you with their good wishes. Here's hoping all goes well with the other two eggs now and that we can all settle down to watch the various stages of chick development. I sincerely hope that this will be a happier time than last year for everyone and that those huge smiles stay put.

Great news - just got in from work at around 4 o'clock to see that first feed. Looking forward to our annual trek north to see the all at Loch Garten in a few weeks - this will make the 10 hour drive fly past !!

Wonderful news it put a smile on my face too when I read about the new arrival.  What a wonderful mate Odin is bless him and how he has looked after her.  Perhaps he should pop over to the Loch of the Lowes and show Eric how it should be done although I have just read that after a good telling off from her he is getting his act together.  Looking foward to seeing the chick and the arrival of more.  Well done to you all for keeping such a close eye on things while the osprey season is going on.  Can't thank you enough for all the joy this brings even with the sad times.;

Jandy, my computer is different as well.  Using the RSPB:Birds of Prey Loch Garten Live Video page, This is how I Zoom.  On Windows Explorer, on the bar just above the contents page, at the Right hand end there are icons with drop down boxes.  One of these is called Page.  Click on the drop down box beside page and you will find  Zoom about half way down the menu.  Click on Zoom to get the choices. Good Luck.  I don't find zooming much use, myself, as the quality reduces so much.

My husband is cycling in France just now and he just rang to say he saw an osprey over the Loire today.  Lovely to hear about all the excitement and happiness.  More to come!!

Hello Quietwoman and all other bloggers! yes, I am still here watching avidly but have only contributed a few times this year. There are many more of us watchers this year including many new osprey fans and its great to read their comments and experience the wonder of these beautiful birds through their eyes. Brilliant to see the chick now I am home from work, can read the blog but not see the webcam pictures at work.

I visited Loch Garten in the early 70's when as far as I can remember there was a fixed telescope and some binoculars trained on the nest. What a change now! Great news to hear that there is now a second pair of ospreys nesting in Wales and of course even more seem to turn up each year at Rutland Water.

Love to all at Loch Garten, keep up the excellent work.

Well done team Garten !!!

That sounds as if I'm saying you all have laid and hatched eggs yourselves !!!

I didn't expect EJ to have her first chick quite yet,,, BUT who cares,, it's here and WOW WOW,, it's wonderful,,,

I watched the first feed at 4pm,, I did wonder though when EJ stood up to take the fish off Odin,, if Odin knew what he was looking at,, he seem a little shocked, then I think it hit him that he was a daddy,,

Oh I can see some fights as to who will sit on the babies the longer,, after Tuesdays happenings on the nest,, Odin wasn't for gving up his eggsitting duties back to EJ, and she wasn't to happy about it,, she pecked him,, pushed him, shouted at him and he just say there in a little world all of his own,,Bless him,, now there are chicks to look after I think there will be an over abundance of fish brought and some pushing and shoving going on as to who looks after the family better,,,

At least we know this years chicks are going to be well looked after, if not overfed,, EJ was pushing food into the chicks mouth quicker that it could swallow,, won't go hungry I think !!!

Can't wait for the other chicks to turn up,, oh such very good news,,,

Well done again all,,

Thanks to all the team members for keeping us up to date with all the goss and making it so much fun to read,,,

Regards

Just saw Odin on nest with a fairly large headless fish. EJ did not respond so after a few minutes Odin flew off with the fish. That has to be a first for EJ, normally she would have grabbed it before he had a chance to land almost. She must be feeling very full to have turned it down ?? What a great provider he is.

What a wonderful sight to greet me this morning!  EJ sitting contentedly on the nest, with the last rays of the sun golden on her, cheeping away softly.  A bird in close proximity (not an osprey) is calling back companionably to her, each taking turns to call softly.  Odin then arives at the nest to see if EJ wants a break.  She doesn't, so the two of them were together on the nest, looking very happy, the other bird still joining in with EJ's celebratory song.  After a few minutes, Odin has a few bits of the remaining fish and then flies off.  I couldn't see if he took the fish or not, but EJ, for the moment, was just not interested it it!  Wonderful news, and wonderful sight.

Just me back again!  To answer my own question, no, Odin didn't take the fish!  After making my last entry, I went back to look at the nest, and got a real treat!  Odin was back standing near the camera on the nest, and EJ was standing on the rim on the far side, elping herself to some of the fish.  Baby #1 was clearly visible, although the 'cushions had been moved in closer to keep it and the eggs warm.  After a couple of minutes, EJ offered it a bit more food, with Odin and the other nearby bird chirping happily to each other.  (It's wonderful when birds form friendships like this with other species in the area.)  Anyway, EJ had some more fish herself, moved the cushions away from the nest cup and settlerd herself down comfortably again.  After checking with her that everything was OK, Odin flew off.  Great viewing!!!!

Well done all.

I am so delighted ...I am so waiting to follow this family again this year, just as I did last year and all through the winter too.

To all the old bloggers and to all the new ones who have joined us this year I bet you are all as full up as I am with the lovely sight of this much loved family of ospreys .

I have seen the chick first dinner. EJ seems on a diet at the moment, as she doesn't eat as much as she used to. It could be that she is too worried for the chick. With various intruders flying around, she can't relax...

Odin brought a fish to the nest. EJ didn't take it so he is eating it right next to her. He is so close she reached over ( while still seated on the eggs) and grabbed a bite. LOL

An intruder landed  on the  camera tree. I could see the  tips of the wings. Poor Odin had his mouth full because he had just bitten off a huge piece of fish and  couldn't alarm call. They both just flapped their wings and  the  intruder left.

Now he just brought a  large  chunk of  fresh moss. He is tidying up the nest and  also  eating the  remains of the whopper from  last night.  LOL  He is priceless!

Then he was sitting with  his  tail over  EJ's head as  she  protested for  him to move.  LOL

Have you zoomed in on the nest LG?  The picture is a bit distorted - I'm not sure I like it, makes everything look a bit stretched out like watching an old movie in wide screen!

Good morning LG! Looks to be bright and dry and good for Odin’s fishing. I was privileged to see our darling first born taking a wobbly look at his home as EJ took a fast exercise flight at about 7.25. All his vision would be comfortable moss bless him.   Several geese popped by to see the new born at 7.45 am but EJ wasn’t budging. EJ now calling urgently for Odin at 07.52am. Took another fast exercise flight at 7.57 am. The little chick wondering where mum was, peering around trying to make sense of it all. Come on Odin, come on Odin, your presence if most definitely required! How far away would EJ’s calls be heard? Does anyone know? I’m off out shortly for a long hike and can’t wait to get back to read all your reports of today’s Osprey day. Enjoy your day fans!  Jane A

Lovely to see the chick being fed..Odin is bringing so much fish in that EJ is often leaving some...

I very rarely comment, I just make the utmost of watching this wonderful nest and enjoy the incredible experience. A big thank you to the LG team. I do have a question though and wondered if someone could enlighten me. When EJ is feeding the little one I can hear little peep peep noises the whole time and I wondered if this is EJ herself making little reassuring noises to the chick or if it is Odin perching nearby keeping verbal contact. Or maybe something else altogether. Excuse my ignorance, have a lot to learn about ospreys still.

Thank you.

Whilst visiting Loch Garten last week I was a little surprised to here one of your volunteers telling people it was your 50th Anniversary this year.

Back in 2004 when the shop there had a much wider selection of stock, I purchased a Loch Garten sweatshirt  with a 50th Anniverary logo on it celebrating 50 years at Loch Garten.

I understood at the time that it was 50 years since the Ospreys started nesting there. Is this anniversary 50 years since going public or was the info wrong in 2004.

REPLY: This year is the 50th anniversary of public viewing at Loch Garten. David.

Another feed for the wee one. EJ tries to make sure that the morsels are small enough for it to take. It must be well and truly stuffed by now. The calls you can hear are EJ's contact calls and the chick will recognise her voice. Jandy--R. click on the picture>zoom>full screen. 'Simples!' Re: zooming in, unfortunately it doesn't actually get you a better picture. You get the same amount of detail, but blown up bigger, which makes it look worse. The resolution of the images isn't great anyway, for the reason that if we broadcast super-high quality images, it'd cost us an absolute fortune in bandwidth charges! (more detail = more data = more £££) Because there are so many of you watching (it's the most popular page on the whole website), we have to keep an eye on the costs. Katie (Web Team)

Thank you Quietwoman for the answer to my question, I thought that was probably what the noises were but wasn't sure :)

Has anyone noticed whether the Goshawk mum has been back at the nest in the NF lately? I've been concentrating on LG mainly but noticed that the Goshawk female  was off the nest for  what seemed like hours last night, and I haven't seen her this morning at all. Hopefully just bad timing on my part, but can't help worrying!

Wonderful news that the next chick has arrived safely, have seen it on You tube this morning.  Well done Odin and EJ only one to go.  EJ was struggling this morning early on trying to keep the intruder off the nest.  No wonder she was frantic when the chick was hatching.  Thankfully alls well that ends well.....what a wonderful Bank Holiday!!!  Congratulations to all!!

Question answered !! Just about 14.22pm I got back to viewing EJ after  reading the two new  Mull eagle blogs I’d missed (watching EJ and Odin). To my amazement and quasi horror there was no EJ – BUT, oh happy relief, the two eggs and a little white head bobbing around like a tiny flag quite safe and sound. So, now I know. EJ will be able to feed her chick in this (what sounds to me like an) horrendous gale. Phew !

Can I see two chicks in the nest now? Odin just arrived with a lovely big fish, and as EJ got up to take it, I'm sure I saw two chicks.

wow, the faily has increased. Just saw Mum and Dad feeding TWO chicks. Did the second one hatch this morning?   Both chicks appear to be very active so that is an excellent sign.  Happy happy times at LG. Well done to all the staff who work so tirelessly - your hard work is so much appreciated - well done all!!!

Yes, EJ, after feeding the first baby has just carefully reached over to number 2, and fed that one too. Now you're all going to tell me that second chick has been there for ages! But I couldn't get online yesterday till it was raining, so had no chance to see any chicks!

How wonderful to see a second weeny head bobbing about and EJ taking so much time to make sure that this brand new little one is getting food as well. She does it so delicately and Odin loves to gaze down at them too.  You forget how small and weeny they are. Well done EJ and Odin and LG team for your second chick. x

3.08 EJ Feeding two. How long has the little one been there. I'm sure I'll find out when the blog's updated. She is so carefully reaching out to feed #2 although #1 is out in front of the queue.  Wonderful to watch.

15.16..Just seen EJ feeding 2 little bobbing heads...

Congrats LG team number 2 has arrived..Oh the season is looking so good this year...

We are off to France at the end of June so will look forward to watching the migration when it happens..

So fantastic too that EJ knows she still has eggs to incubate so leaves the fish to get back on those eggs as there is a strong and chilling cold wind blowing.

Fantastic..

All seems quiet at the nest. EJ looking the most settled I've seen her all day.She sure was very stresssed earlier today, with intruders, new arrivals and lack of Odin and fish!! Poor girl.Still the old man came up trumps, but I'm sure she gave him a bit of cold shoulder!!

Sioux, I think most male Osprey are 'programmed' to fish at this time whether the female calls or not. Sometimes EJ calls if she can see him just to keep in contact, and she will call if she can see him coming with a fish to make sure he comes to her. EJ can probably see Odin a lot of the time, even if we can't. It's a realy super weekend so far even tho' the weather hasn't been the best for little chicks. Interesting story about the fish at Loch of the Lowes!! Who'd have thought it?
