Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Brace yourselves........

More woe, I'm afraid.  I can hardly bear to break the news to you, but it is looking like we might have lost Odin.  He hasn't been seen since for over 24 hours, since 07.15am yesterday morning (Tuesday) and the chicks have not been fed for 27 hours since 06.20am yesterday morning.

We have no idea what might have befallen him.  After last week's trauma involving fishing line, he was clean of line and over the weekend seemed to make up for lost time by bringing in a surfeit of fish for EJ and brood but he's now gone AWOL.

There are so many un-answered question; has the trauma of fishing line entanglement taken it's toll on him, either by ingestion of hooks or line?  That wing damage he sustained as a result of entangelement, has that injured him in some way, even though he seemed to be able to fish well over the weekend?  Has he encountered some other problem?  Or is he not as saintly as we've thought, has he had his head turned by another female osprey? There have, apparently, been some very late arriving ospreys in recent days, has one of those caught his eye? Any of the above are possible, but something linked to the dificulties of last week perhaps seem most likely?  Needless to say we are very worried.

Seeking counsel from Roy Dennis, he told me that he has known a time when a male was absent from an active nest for 4 days, but then re-appeared, though it is very unusual behaviour.  We can but hope that Odin is ok, out there some where and that he might just return.

Meantime, we are concerned for the chicks and so to buy us (and Odin) some time, this morning we placed some trout on the nest to sustain EJ and her brood, in the hope that eventually Odin will come back, safe and sound.  If you were watching this morning you might have seen hands placing fish in the nest.  Sorry if this alarmed you, but we were taken over by events and the decision to do this was taken late last night, and we did not have time to forewarn you that this would be happening.

It was done under licence, shortly before 9am this morning. EJ was off the nest for just 20 minutes, returned promptly and immediately, within one minute, she began feeding on the deposited fish, and feeding the chicks.  We are likely to do this for a few days, possibly morning & evening, in the hope that meantime Odin returns, but we are taking things day by day, consulting with experts and reviewing the situation.

If Odin does not return, then according to Roy, there is an outside chance that another young non-breeding male osprey intruder might respond to EJ's calls for food and those of the chicks, and possibly take on this ready-made family. Certainly last evening and again twice already this morning there have been intruders on site, at one point two of them believed to be a pair, sat in the camera tree adjacent to the nest, appearing to await EJ shifting.

Sorry to bring you this bad news,  We'll keep you posted.

My heart is broken all I can do is hope that Odin will return.  Thanks for putting the fish in the nest for EJ and what a shock for her.  Such a faithful mate and good provider.  Will you keep putting fish out until they fledge or is this not able to be done. Odin please come back I am in floods of tears.  My synpathies are with you all at Loch Garten, this is so tragic.

Thanks for keeping us in the picture Richard.  What awful news, but we shall all be keeping our fingers crossed that a miracle will happen and he returns.  Poor EJ.  At least she accepted the fish.

On a happier note, I am pleased to see that Tesco even does home delivery to nests!

Thank you so much for this update Richard and WELL DONE TEAM LG for responding so well to the emergency. It was amazing and heartening to watch your intervention on camera and to see EJ so readily accepting the fish.

You are all BRILLIANT. Is this human delivery of fish to an osprey nest a first?

My fingers are crossed that Odin is safe and well and shows up soon. Rather worrying if he went awol with another female though.

Oh no, this is terribly sad news -- my thoughts go out to all the LG team, EJ and babies, and of course, Odin.  That chap is a bit of a mystery, he turned up anonymously and managed to defy the odds with getting rid of the line, so let's hope he can surprise us again by coming back to the nest.

In the meantime, will the LG team continue to feed the babies and for how long?  I guess this is a really difficult call for you all to make, and it is still too early for EJ to leave them and catch fish herself...

Thanks so much for letting us know.  All the best, Richard and LG team.

Oh I can't believe it.  If you continue to provide fish will EJ be able to start and fish herself assuming the chicks could manage during her absences?  The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Thank you for the update Richard, I was so worried! We are certainly having plenty of drama this year. Poor EJ she must be worried for her chicks-as we all are. We can  only pray that this is a wee blip and that Odin will return. Once again fingers and everything else crossed for our little family. i have to go to work this afternoon but my mind will be at LG

Thankyou for letting us know, I am devastated as I'm sure you all are, poor Odin I just hope he's ok, if he has found another lady friend, I just hope he soon comes back, and that nothing has happened to him, poor EJ and babies, will she go to find food for them or is that too big a risk leaving the babies, I just hope someone up there is listening and sends Odin back safe and sound, come on Odin you have been such a fantastic mate and Dad please please come back we ALL need you.

I'm so gutted it's unreal, so much so that I'm really struggling with knowing what to say :-( ... I imagine that writing that update Richard was as hard for you to do as it is for us to read and I can't imagine how difficult this situation is for you and your Team, with not only having to deal with the the upset of Odin's disappearance but then the practicallity of what to do next, it at all anything! - collectively I can imagine that everyone at LG would be prepared to do what ever it takes to keep EJ and the chicks provided for, even if it meant paragliding over the nest dropping fish every hour like red cross parcels! .. but I also know that as upset as you all are, you also know that sometimes nature can seem to be so cruel and this is just the way it is.. and so on and so forth. Personally, I would like to think that Odin has fallen for the charms of another, rather than suffered some horrible ordeal... even if that does make him a bit of a dirty scoundrel - he's been so amazing, even through the fishing line ordeal and maybe some other female has lost her mate and her calls have just got his heroic attention, after all he's such a good provider he maybe just on daddy auto pilot and wants to feed the world?..... lets hope if he's still around somewhere, that he may respond to EJ's calls & come back soon..... I wonder if EJ would let anyone step in to Odin's shoes as she seems so protective of her nest and chicks that i can't imagine her letting anyone near, but maybe she will get to a point where she accepts Odin has gone and she may then welcome a new partner.... either way, our fingers, toes, eyes, legs are crossed here for a miracle.

Richard, thanks for letting us know the latest (BAD) news. I have just finished translating what happened on the Italian birdcam forum. In Rome they had a kestrel nest with a couple who had been together for at least 9 years. The male has disappeared about 3 weeks ago, leaving his partner with 5 chicks to feed. Giacomo dell'Omo (expert ornitologist and president of ORNIS Italica)  took the smallest chick away, giving it to Luigi di Stano, who is quite an expert on falcons. Luigi was feeding the chick who was doing remarkably well. Giacomo is also providing food for the nest, with the help of other people. Recently he took other 2 chicks away, because their mother is getting weaker and skinnier and could not cope teaching them all how to feed themselves and how to fly. Now Luigi is caring for three chicks and will teach them what they need to know to be able to survive in the wild. I hope Odin returns to the nest, as he is my favourite bird but, in case he won't, is there a possibility that a human expert could take EJ's chicks into custody? Let's pray that Odin returns to the nest safe and sound...

Devastating news.  My heart goes out to all at Loch Garten, it must have been so difficult for you even to write the blog.  I am (along with so many others) trying to think positive thoughts, that perhaps/hopefully Odin will suddenly appear, and EJ gives him hell!!  I did, however, have a few tears when reading the blog, and am not ashamed to admit it.

Hi all,

This is heartbreaking news! I can't quite believe it, trying hard to hold back the tears. I'm not going to give up hope!

I do have one question, Richard, when you say above, about two intruder Ospreys, thought to be a pair, do you mean that this is a male and a female who might be keen on taking over EJ and Odin's nest for themselves? (I hope not!)

REPLY:  Yes that is what I meant.  -  Richard

Dear Richard and team, thank you so much for taking the time to inform. This is alarming .. Everything crossed for Odin!!! I just love the way you try to "solve it" right now for EJ and chicks. I was so glad to see how fast EJ started to feed the babies after your delivery.

I've been expecting this news since early this morning. Richard and LG team, I feel so sorry for you, you must be devastated and had a very worrying 24 hrs. There is one small consolation; you haven't found Odin's body so he could still be around somewhere. If another pair of Osprey ousted EJ, what would happen to the chicks? Or would they not take over the nest until EJ had abandoned all and the worst had happened to the bairns?

Our teacher told us this morning about Odin's problems with the fishing line. We were very happy he seemed to get over that. Now we are worried again but we do understand that there are so many things that can happen to the chicks and the adults in nature.

What made us really sad and angry was that someone would steal eggs from a nest after the birds flew 3000 miles and now it's for nothing.

Note from Mrs Blair: The children, although they don't like it, can understand and accept natural events but deliberate acts that harm the birds are another story entirely.

I have just tried to log into the video but can't so came to read the reports. Thank you for letting us all know what is happening on the nest Richard, I can't believe the news about Odin its heartbreaking. I do hope he is just having a day off to recover from last weeks ordeal with the fishing line.

I am so glad you are intervening putting fish on the nest at least it will keep them in food until we know for sure that Odin is not coming back. It actually lightened the mood a little bit when I saw the Utube video seeing you put 4 large fish around the nest. A good advertisement for Tescos 'Tesco's have the freshest fish to feed the family'

Thank you Richard for taking time out to tell us out in cyberspace about the situation you have up at Loch Garten. You must all be worried sick about the success of this season. It was superb to see EJ readily accept the fish you sent up the 'Fish Ladder' and good that there is no fishing line on the nest. After reading the devasting news this morning at work I wanted to post a comment but didn't have my details as I'm usually fiona13, now I can comment from work as I'd been putting it off for ages.

I just hope and pray that Odin makes a safe return to EJ and the babies real soon.  I'm thinking of him on a 36 hour bender, out wetting the babies heads so to speak :-)

So glad that the LG team have provided the family with some fresh fish to see them through the day as that would have been the first time they went without food for a long time and they must have been really hungry.

My partner and I visited the centre last Tuesday (26th) and had a great time watching Odin deliver a fish and then how he watched from a nearby tree as EJ delicately fed the chicks.

I have a cold just now so the tears I have make it look like I have runny eyes which is just as well.

Patrizia from Spain your comment about the Kestral chicks is wonderful and heart warming that they still have a chance of survival.

My heart goes out to all the staff at LG and fellow bloggers at this time and fingers crossed that it all comes good in the end.
