Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Better late than never......

Last evening, we finally got around to having our hatch party, an annual event in our calendar to mark the hatching of our osprey chicks.  It's now almost four weeks since the first chick hatched, but we've been too busy to fit in a celebration.  So better late than never, we wetted the youngsters heads, so to speak, last night, joining our wider team colleagues here at Abernethy for a BBQ.

It was a great evening, with a mix of weather, from warm sunshine to the odd shower, but you can't plan for these things.  We all chipped-in with contributions to the spread of fare, and thanks to those of you out there, who called in to provided us with cakes.

Talking of cakes, take a look at this.....

Osprey hatch-party cake. Photo: Stewart Taylor

and this...........complete with those red patches of sphagnum moss, you've seen on camera!  Note also the accurate size differences between the three chicks.

Osprey hatch-party cake. Photo Stewart taylor

This superb cake was made by Julie, one of this year's Caper-watch Team (aka JulieQ, on Loch Garten bloggers).  So far we haven't sampled its delights as we haven't the heart (yet) to cut & spoil such a magnificent cake.  But from here in the office, I can hear the team down at the Centre, food-soliciting, so it'll be ceremoniously cut later today no doubt.

Oh by the way, all's well with the osps.

What a fabulous cake! Sounds like you all had a good time and how great to see photos of you all, face to the name at last! Well what a difference a week makes. The chicks have grown enormous thanks to Odin's fantastic endeavours, even teeny weeny is doing really well. So great to see and EJ so contented (I do love her). So pleased you have the funds to satellite tag again this year as it will be interesting to see if they follow Nethy's path to Senegal. I too feel that Nethy is out there somewhere and hope that she will be back. QUIETWOMAN, had a look at your pub, is it the one in Buxton? And I thought you were just a quiet woman! JANEALLPORT, Cumbria is a lovely place to live and still handy for Scotland. Hi MAUREEN, missed the Gossies unfortunately, I see you are still not sleeping very well! Hope to see you on Sunday WeeJeannie. Richard, not been able to make a donation on line. Who do I make a cheque out to?

Congratulations Julie on an exceptional effort ! Great detail even down to chick sizes. Richard will probably delay next years celebration until just before fledging - "more cake". Can I repeat my congratulations to Big Rab for his exceptional alternative chicks video - I posted my original comments at the end of the previous blog and this is just in case folks missed it.

All I can say is WOW - absolutely fantastic - that cake is a work of art!  Glad to know that the LG team are allowed to take breaks every now and again!  At the risk of a double posting (for those who read the most recent blog), check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AQ7Km46yW4 - a follow up to the popularity of 'Odin the Magnificent' (which can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCzerfwXqhU  ).

nearly 2 pm - on the nest a peaceful heaving heap of contented snoozing feathers. They don't have the "oven ready" look that someone (who?) used to comment on! And thank goodness the wind has dropped so dad can go fishing with more hope of success today.

Julie, how didd you make such a brilliant cake? The detail is wonderful. Does the nest come off or do you have to steel yourselves to............no, I won't go there! On a sombre note, I've just heard on the radio that a Golden Eagle has been found poisoned in Argyll. There are still wicked people out there.

Fantastic Cake Julie, must have taken hours.  So please you all finally had time for the hatching party and I hope you had a really great evening.  BigRab74 - great video.  Watching the webcam at work with the sound on for the first time today (I'm the only one here so can get away with it - have to keep the sound off usually and look like i'm working) and I cannot believe how vocal the chicks have got.  A couple of times I've been away from the computer and thought I heard EJ calling but it was one of the chicks.  One of them sounds very much like mum.  Great view of Odin bringing in lunch just before 2pm.

I'm very impressed - the cake is a work of art! Can someone please put me right on the identity of chicks 2 and 3. At 2.00 pm theywere all lined up to be fed, with chick # 1 in the middle (more developed plumage and getting the lions share - sorry to mix metaphors). Chick #2 was on the right and getting some of the feed but the smallest chick (# 3?) on the left of the screen towards the back wasn't getting any while I was viewing - or have these two reversed in size/pecking order? I don't think I can be seeing detail on my PC as clearly as some bloggers.

Birdnuts, the middle chick was on the LEFT of the Eldest which was in the middle. Youngest was on the RIGHT of the Eldest. For a while, even the youngest chick was cowed by Eldest but quickly got back in to the feeding line, whereas, Viggo (as I call the second chick) stayed with his head down looking pathetic for the rest of the meal. By the time he took courage and got back in line the fish was finished and so he has gone hungry. The middle chick has a quite noticeable white above and below his eye stripe. The other two chicks look to my eye to have a more ‘delicate’ or ‘slender’ head.

Here's Odin with another fish, good man! It's difficult to see who's who with EJ sheilding two of the chicks, one of the younger ones is getting all the food right at this minute, hope it's whichever one went without at the last feed. Now the other young one is trying to come round EJ on the camera side. It's nearly up by her face. Determination is a wonderful thing!

The magnificient Odin is back with another good size fish at 14.53. By having the sound on I'm finally getting to see fish deliveries, cannot really miss them with the noise that EJ makes. I feel a bit sorry for Odin as he brings in the fish, has it snatched from him and then they all turn their back on him to eat. As Simon said with his picture it's just FISH FISH FISH

7:04 UK Time: Odin delivered about 15 minutes; I managed to logg of accidentally (was watching BigRab's videos - brilliant) and closed wrong page. Glad someone told me about the pink moss - I thought there'd been a blood bath overnight! JULIE: Fab cake: I didn't get the "bake cake" gene; just the "eat cake' one. BUNNI: You're in the same time zone as me; may I ask which state? EJ has just booted small chick to middle of nest and seems to be settling again.

Julie that was an amazing cake you made for the hatching party and so glad you all enjoyed it as well. You have great talent. Also good to see the team but are you camera shy Richard would have liked to have see you with them (or did you take the photos). It will be a shame to cut the cake but if the staff are food soliciting you had better go and share it out. You all thoroughly deserved your celebration for the dedication you have towards not only the ospreys but all the other wild life there. You can see from the numerous blogs how much this site means to so many people and I suppose in a way we all feel part of a big family. We are really spoilt because you update us frequently to let us know what is going on despite being really busy. BigRab74 the video is just so good, another one saved to my favourites so I will be able to watch both videos whenever I want. Thanks so much.

Another fish delivered around 4pm -- at least there is frequent deliveries but whatever happened to the three of them feeding nicely? One of the chicks, I'm not sure if it's 2 or 3 has spent the majority of feeding times today cowered behind EJ. Willing it to get in there and fight for it does not work. It even came behind and under EJ and put it's head through EJ's legs hoping too get a bite but to no avail. By the time the other two got their fill, there was not much left -- it got a few measly bites. I hope the other 2 are still stuffed when the next fish comes in so this one can get a decent feed.

16:05 logged on and see EJ has a fish!! All three lined up, #1 in the middle. I think #2 to the outside (to the right of #1) and #3 is on the inside (am I right Jane?). If so, then #1 starts pecking #3 who leaves the line up. #2 continues feeding along side #1. #3 starts to move towards line, but #1 glares and #3 goes back in submission. EJ is continuing to feed #1 and #2. Eventually #3 starts to creep forward and tries to pick food, but EJ ignores. Now #3 is going round the back of EJ at the edge of the nest!!! #1 has had enough and leaves but #3 remains under EJ at the back and even tries poking its head through her legs to reach food!! Eventually after #2 is full, EJ gives #3 some food but it is not much. #3 is still crying for food. I wonder why is #1 constantly picking on this little chick?

Two chicks cowed whilst EJ eats the head. Viggo attacked by Eldest and ignored by mama! But !! All’s well that end’s well - it was a reasonable ration all round considering. Off to work now, a little late but couldn’t leave that feed in the middle. Fish reports when I get home then Osp fans. See you.

Well, he/she managed to get some food once the other two were full and turned away. Thank heavens for that, at least. Although it obviously isn't enough to satisfy the poor chick. I wanted to put my hand through the screen, pick it up, push the others out of the way and plonk it down right up against mum! It was even trying to reach mum's beak from between her legs. Just hear the noise it's making now, letting everyone hear it's still hungry.

All this talk of wonderful food! M.M. MMmm... Pancakes!! I like mine with lemon and sugar. I wonder if you, Team LG, managed to finish the cake to the last crumb. Thanks all you bloggers for keeping the fish tally. I have been out all day. Just logged on to see EJ in peaceful mode trying to accomodate all three babes under her wings. Will catch up later on pub, SIXY. Have a good weekend.

#! is giving EJ a hard time because she wants to be totally under her. She is grumbling and grumbling!! Poor Ej is doing her best to accommodate her demanding off spring. I'll bet she will be happy when "that one" fledges and her job is done. She will welcome a long warm and sunny winter in Africa

10pm ish and Odin comes up with another fish Some aggression from C1 at the beginning meant she got all to start with but very soon 2 and 3 got in the act and had the bulk of the fish. I would say C3 almost had the most in the end:)

22:05 - fish delivered but not enough.  #3 again suffers and left crying for food.   With each delivery, I am becomming increasingly worried for the youngest chick and its distressing to watch.  Odin needs to either bring in more or larger fish.  Whatever,  he needs to step up his act.

10pm. Odin brought in supper. A little bit of bullying from 'numero uno', 2/3 immediately submitted : 2 quickly rallyed followed by teeny weeny. No's 1/2 got a good share but teeny only got 3/4 bits and continued food-soliciting when feeding over. Poor wee thing. His fiesty spirit will return!!!!

Hi It sounds like i've missed a treat as I cant watch Rabs film as my company has just added security stuff and stopped me using facebook too!!!   I have however seen our family in the feather at LG this week which was wonderful for me, especially as I'm leaving for foreign parts later this year and dont know when I can go again!!. Thanks to all at LG for making me and my 3 young granddaughters so welcome!!  I can guarantee future bird protectors as they were chuffed to become members. I've just watched feeding time and no 3 was practically ignored by EJ despite really plucky efforts to get fed and being bullied by no 1 chick.  Still he/she looks strong for the moment!!!

That was horrible. Odin brought in a fish at about 22.00. Eldest was horrible to the other two chicks- she didn't need all she got. Viggo got the next most, but to say Eldest had the lion's share is a horrible understatement. Youngest was left horrible hungry. So then, did the youngest get the lion's share of the previous fish? I'm in horrible anticiaption of your probably horrible reports of this evenings events being published tomorrow. Youngest is soliciting horribly for fish. It's horribly heart breaking. And she has to get through the night. I'm probably going to have horrible dreams tonight of being pushed over the edge of a nest whilst Osprey chicks cackle in satisfaction. Am I making myself clear? Pass me a tissue someone please.

Yes Karen, it was the middle chick (Viggo). When Eldest cowed Viggo (I wish he’d stand up for himself) he only got the courage to lift up his little head as the last of the fish was disappearing. But even Rocky has had a raw deal. After this event where Youngest did as well as Eldest she was cut out by mama entirely at the next meal! And Viggo was vindicated with Eldest getting some at the end. The fish delivered at about 22.00 - went to Eldest and EJ (fair enough where EJ is concerned, not sure if she had the head, that could be it). Viggo got some towards the end but Rocky got about two mouthfuls, that’s all, and she’s been LOUDLY soliciting fish up to the time EJ settled them all beneath here. Gut wrenching.

Lovely to read all the blogs today and see the wonderful photos of all the gang including the one of Richard AND that fabulous cake....clever girl...Glad you all had such a really good time... I hope you all ahd a wee dram or two to wash it down.!!! Sounds like Odin has been holding up his end of the Superdaddy deal...and bringing in lots of fish although it sounds as thogh Number One has been a bit of a bully today, but that's only natural...so don't, please evryone, get cross with her, she is only doing what is natural to her.. I have been doing the final packing for our housemove today...Sunday will be my last day on the computer here for about 3 weeks until we get set up in France...LG will be my very first port of call to see how the chicklets are faring. By then ringing and naming will be done, so please Richard, take lots of photos so I can catch up...

6:18 UK time. Good morning all! Odin arrives with breakfast. Chicks lined up and behaved nicely at first, then one indulged in some brief pushing and shoving (not sure who was the pusher or the pushee). All have eaten though one hung back after a few minutes - didn't seem too interested. Video seems to freeeze every few minutes; now looks like they're all going back to sleep! Seems like a plan to me, so goodnight from California.

Karen

06:17, EJ starts calling, 06:18 Odin arrives. Thankfully there is no fighting. All three lined up, #3 and #2 being fed first, then #1 reaching for food. Didn't last long, #1 glared at #2 then attacked #3. Both turned away. #2 sneaked back in and is being fed along with #1 whereas #3 is at the back looking on. #3 later starts creeping foward but 06:29 the fish is gone!! The youngest however did get some food when the fish arrived but they need more and so does EJ - she has had nothing!! These scenes are indicating food shortage so hopefully Odin will realise and start bringing in more fish!!

Odin just delivered a fish, but it is not a large one. #'s 2 & 3 mostly getting fed first. #1 Got a little aggressive, but not vicious as at some other times .Now EJ is feeding it. First both of the others backed off then it looked like #3 decided to take a chance and go back for more . Both being fed. #2 just hanging back, but it was fed quite a bit of food before #1 became aggressive. Odin is still looking a bit thin.

Morning, see a few of us are up early!!  It is now getting difficult telling the difference between #2 and #3.  I have always seperated them by the thickness of the white stripe down their back, #2 being thicker than #3.  Also, #2 has more white around the eyes.  At this morning's feed, I thought it was #3 that hung back.  Has #3 overtaking #2?   I can't wait for them to be ringed!!

Reply for Karen - I appreciate your being concerned about about chick 3, and my video wasn't intended to have a laugh at 3's expense - it was to highlight that although there can be moments of bullying, there is the opposite side as well.  I had the chance to watch all the feeding yesterday, and chick 3 is not missing out at every turn - yes, on occasion it is being bullied, but at other times all 3 chicks are lined up and fed without incident.  Number 1 may be a 'wee thug' at times, but it is natural behaviour (older chicks have been filmed having squabbles).  Maybe one for the experts - should we be worried about this continuing 'bullying' behaviour by number #1, given that the pecking order has been established?

REPLY - It is perfectly natural behaviour, so you should not be worried.  Number 1 needs to maintain the pecking order, which is why the behaviour is continuing.  Claire.

Oh dear, just as I thought. Well, I'm not here today to see meal times, maybe a good thing, but if one looks not interested Annette in SoCal it's because they have been cowed by Eldest (they are interested, just dare not ). Karen, I'm hoping you can tell the difference between chicks 2 and three. Youngest is still the smallest . Cos I want to know if they all fare reasonably well for food today. Viggo is the one most likely to hang back the longest if Eldest starts to bully. So, dear Osprey fans, since I'm about to go out in an hour or so I'd be very grateful for fish reports and now, feeding reports. Many thanks.

BigRab74...did you watch last year? If you did you will remember what a bully Nethy was, she was awful but we still loved her!!!!! Karen...try not to worry too much. I found BigRab74's video's helped release my tension by giving me something to smile about. I am afraid you will see worse (MAYBE) when they start feeding themselves and there is only one fish...... You should try to watch the Goshawks at feeding time, the female snatches it and the male doesn't get a chance. He is now learning to 'steal' it from her. All creatures are vicious when it comes to food....it's everyone for themselves. Don't worry just enjoy!!! QUIETWOMAN....I will think of you when I am eating my pancakes with lemon and sugar.

BigRab, I never for one moment thought or insinuated you were laughing at the expense of chick #3. That would be cruel. Your participation indicates you are sincere and care for the chicks. It is also essential there is some light hearted humour within the blogs. I am aware it is nature, but I don't like seeing chicks fight expecially at meal times. That is my preference, not a dig at you :-)

CLAIRE, a thought just occurred to me. Will the chicks have different coloured rings? It would make it easier for us out here to identify them.

Well, all the superlatives about Julie's cake have been said.Stunning!! What a talent. Nice to see all the LG (human) team for those of us who live a wee bit far away to visit.

The nest seems quiet and a picture of contentment as the 3 feathery bundles are dozing and mum's catching a couple of winks (don't think Odin will be away long enough for her to catch 40)

Oops, all awake and no. 1 chick frantically preening. The eye stripe is so prominent on the chicks now they look like little lone rangers!

Will the LG posse be posting updates on the chicks once tagged on here or will the info be available elswhere? xx

Fish delivery! I think the youngest was bullying number 2, trying to push him out of the nest! 1 and 3 had plenty to eat, 2 has just started. 2 and 3 are about the same size: it is just the slight difference in colour that helps me recognise them.

REPLY: Hi Julie we cut the cake at the Centre this morning and invited those visitors there at the time, to join us in eating some of it.  It was very well received, rightly so.  We did though cut it around the edges, as no-one wanted to eat the nest and chicks!  There was bit of squabbling amongst the team brood, for dominance, vying for the biggest piece, thankfully though they didn't resort to pecking each other and there was enough to go around.  Just hope that the now replete team aren't lolling about in the Centre snoozing off their cake meal.  -  Richard

Chicks are lying down, now: they had plenty to eat :) Goshawks still there! One is more talkative than the other and looks more energetic, too. I can hardly bear to watch any more. #1 and #2 being fed more or less equally until #1 is full and goes off. Meantime #3 at the far end of the nest is submissively keeping away from the food until it is just #2 being fed. Then s/he tries to join in but is intimidated by #2 and again turns away. This happens again so #3 ends up with very little and EJ finishes the fish herself. I've used 'pecking order' numbers but am still unclear whether 2 and 3 are also hatching/size order. #1 is standing up properly for short periods now, so clearly streets ahead.

Thanks Jane, I think I've got it.  The white above the eye stripe is quite prominent.  I'm so sorry for your Viggo - I know you have a thing for #2, funny how we have favourites.   Rocky (#3) has been a real horror this morning!!  Never mind I'm sure they'll be OK.

Bob Mansell, I don't think you need to worry just because EJ is not on the nest.  She is probably perching nearby, as perching is more comfortable for her feet, and can respond quickly if need be.

Like some others I am now finding it hard to tell the difference between #2 and #3.  Is it possible that, if #3 is female and #2 is male, #3 will eventually either outgrow #2 or at least be the same size?  I know that this to some extent depends on how much food each gets to eat though.

Good to Odin has been quite busy and all looks peaceful at the moment.  Smallest seems OK and perhaps we worry a bit too much.  He/she always get fed and is often quite feisty.  If it is a bit smaller perhaps it doesn't need so much as the larger two.  Perhaps I am wrong but they all look fine.  Glad you enjoyed the cake at Loch Garten and glad you didn't eat the chicks from the top.

Maureen:  You're right, the fights will get worse later.  I dread to think - it was bad enough last year with one fish between Nethy and Deshar so what what is it going to be this year with one between three?   At least each chick stands a fair chance as they'll be more evenly matched in size (Deshar did eventually learn to start holding his own with Nethy).  It is just now when they're so wee as there is such a disadvantage for the younger chicks.  It is amazing the difference a couple of days make.

No 1 and 3 eating merrily, no 2 cowering at the back of EJ. I think I have the chicks numbered the right way round. Number three tried to creep up and join in, but no 1 wasn't having any of it. Number three then tried to go round the far side of EJ, but there's no room. I can't even see no 3 now, she has to be either under EJ, or struggling to get to the other side of her.

16:11 EJ calling, chicks up, Odin is on his way!!!   #3 attacks #1, but when #1 looks at it, #3 backs away knowing what it did!!  #2 is standing back well.  16:12, Odin lands.  #1 is being fed then #2 sneaks in and is also being fed.  #3 has crawled up behind EJ and round the back of her!!!  #3 is against the edge of the nest but not getting any food.  16:20 fish gone.  Shared between #1 and #2.  #3 got nothing and is crying to EJ for food.  Oh no!!  #3 launched forward and attacked #2 - quite violent.  The eldest (#1), I think actually tried to split them and put #3 in its place.  #3 is obviously annoyed at #2 getting food!!

Only started blogging, watching and tracking last September, so missed all misery of watching last summer's fight for food. Like several of you, I'm wondering whether I can continue watching with things as they are. I've just read some of last June's blog and noticed the comments about getting the positives out of the situation. Perhaps I'll stop and start up again in about a week's time. I accept that nature has to be tough, but I don't want to watch the suffering. What's puzzling me is why has there been such a change in Odin's behaviour again. Is it that the weather is windier than when he was bringing in so many Fish?

Every time I have come in to see the birds I go away.  It's not a happy nest today.  I'm a woos because I can't stand to see the bullying so I just go away.   I have the choice not like 2 and three.  although 3 did face up to 2 then 1  thought !I'm not having that" so he had  a go at 3.  I 'spose it's just the same reaaly as the garden birds only bigger and I don't see it in the nest.

This is so funny. #1 chick is such a 'copy cat'!  Doing a lot of food-soliciting and tidying up the nest. At one point was trying to cover siblings with a big twig but only managed to wrap it round own neck. #1 chick has to be a girl!!!!

It appears that a certain someone was mucking about with one of Lossiemouth’s finest, the evidence can be found at: (and you might need to switch your sound on?)

Well, yawn, slow start here. Have read all the blogs and thanks so much to those of you who can actually tell them apart! Like other wooses (sp?), I have a hard time with the infighting, although it's natural. Difference is, of course, that a human Mom would typically step in after a while and at least make sure all got to eat. (From a Darwinian standpoint, maybe that's not a good thing!)  All chicks now have their backs to each other with Mom looking about (have they been sent to their corners to reconsider their behaviour?) In the meantime just heard horses on the Goshawk cam...

Long time from 10.42 to  16.22 for a fish. Was there really no fish brought between those times please? Four fish today so far sounds pretty reasonable but NOT when the chicks are always so hungry when the fish arrives. There was no bullying between hikers, runners, and bikers on the Mendips today I'm glad to say. We were all very polite.

I certainly didn't see any other fish Janeallport. I was away from the computer several times, and they eat so quickly now that it's possible I may have missed a fish. But Odin has definitely dropped the number of fish he's bringing home these days. Remember the days EJ was more or less force feeding the chicks? How long ago that seems!

Richard added information under one comment a little while back that after Odin brought a fish he perched in a nearby dead tree preening or sleeping until EJ started fish soliciting. So, why doesn’t she do it more often now that the chicks are growing so fast? At 18.38 today for instance, where is Odin? Please, WHEN, a team member has time, I’d be so grateful to be able to understand the situation of the fish getting here. Thank you so much.

REPLY:  EJ will food solicit, to send Odin on his way.  If you can't/don't hear her doing that, then he's not there to receive her ear-bashing.  Yes at times he sits in the nearby tree to preen/snooze, but equally, once he's delivered a fish, he then gets on out of there.  EJ will only solicit for food if he is in ear-shot.  If she's quiet, then assume he's away off somewhere.  -  Richard

Sorry janeallport, if I puzzled  you, particularly since I rely on you to be the one who counts the fish! have I got it wrong to-day? I was thinking of how odin started off impressing us all, then had the dreadful incident with the fishing line that resulted in a supply crisis, then how he provided a glut of fish, only for there to be a slackening off again in the last two days- admittedly not as bad as earlier, but enough to mean that one chick is hardly getting anything - and another is now starting to get peckish. Am I worrying unduly?

Oh, OK, thanks jennyw . What seems years ago, in one of my comments I gave Odin and A+ saying I'd reserve the distinction for when the chicks were teenagers. Well....he's not getting one. Yet, anyway. My exams don't have multiple answers with tick boxes. Odin, take note. Can't stand Youngest food calling. Gratefully going downstairs to eat mine. Please note any fish until I get back upstairs jennyw. Ta.

Simon so enjoyed that, briillaint Another one for my favourites. I sincerely hope Odin is off fishing at the moment as there is a lot of noise coming from the chicks although EJ is quiet at the moment. I have not managed to see any fish coing in today, is that all he has brought in 4?

Jane, I saw no fish between 10.42 and 16.22.  What a day this has been.  Chick #3 (Rocky) is definately out to get #2 (Viggo).  Chick #1 hasn't misbehaved or been bullying.  Yes s/he has turned on Rocky but only to keep order!!  Rocky has been a complete horror and instigated all troubles.  I just hope s/he calms down when the next fish comes in.  Best description for today's viewing has to be the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" !!!!

Lovely time at Loch Garten this afternoon even though Odin was a bit late bringing in afternoon tea - a smallish pike (according to Helen - volunteer extraordinaire).  The chicks are extremely vocal now, almost as loud as EJ when she is food soliciting.  Poor Odin - he has probably gone off to find some ear plugs.  Julie - the cake was delicious.  Thank you Richard for saving a piece for me, much appreciated and thank you for making sure the female chaffinch found its way out of the Centre before closing time!

REPLY: Pru, you visit us so often, perhaps you should consider booking in to be one of our residential volunteers for a week?  Nice to see you as ever.  -  Richard

Karen, I'm sure Rocky's behaviour is because the chick is hungry. She can't bully Eldest - she is too out matched. So Viggo, bless him, is her outlet. She also wants his share of the food of course. Just listen to her? Heart breaking. I hope mama sorts the feeding frenzy out correctly, next fish. But with Eldest not having eaten for a while I'm despondent about the outcome.

Jane, of course it is all down to hunger. Like you, I don't think the next fish will be pleasant but lets hope Odin brings in a whopper so there's plenty to go round with some left over for later!!

Simon, my husband just came in from lawn mowing and commented when I showed him your latest that Odin would say to the kids " You'd fly that fast if your back-side was on fire!"

I have been out all of today and only just briefly popping in and trying to skim through all the comments, plus whizzing through the verious fish deliveries - one thing strikes me from today - chick number 3 still has fight in him, so don't worry - we know he won't win a fight with chick 1, but he/she is showing a fighting spirit in terms of chick 2.  It possibly shows that if you're (possibly) hungry, you will pick a fight to get fed.  Yes, yes, the roller-coaster ride of who gets fed what and when will continue for many more days and weeks ahead!!

Oh yes, of course, the one that wasn't hungry enough to call for fish gets it. Spit. Hiss. I know it's wretched nature but I don't have to like it. I don't.

Well done Odin another fish and on course for your daily average. Sorry I missed the cake today but I do hope you all enjoy the shortbread. Made by Walkers as my days of baking are in the past children flown the nest and if I baked I would eat the lot!!

19:48, Odin brings in a fair sized fish. Chick #1 is hungry and wants fed first. Chick #2 standing back and #3 gets badly pecked right in front of the camera lens. Its bad enough without a close up!! Soon chick #2 sneaks in and is getting some food. #3 is moving round the back and waits in line. EJ feeds #1 and #2. For some reason #3 wanders away to the back. The fish is gone, #3 has had nothing and is so hungry. Now we have ugly heart breaking scenes.

Thanks for the fish report Wendyb, 64 fish from Odin in the last 10 days. Fantastic. I was watching last year. How many fish was OVS bringing in, can anyone remember?

just watched feeding - so distressing - even my 6ft hunk finds it unwatchable!! No 3 seems to have given up and had not a bite this last feeding time - unless I missed something as I didn't see the fish come in!!!  He/she just backed off and skulked on the other side of the nest. Despite this he was still pushed and shoved by the others. This is the second meal today I've seen where EJ made no attempt to feed this one!!
