Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Ringing & tagging.............

The time has come, well almost.  We plan to ring and satellite tag the young ospreys on Monday 6 July at c.8 am.  This is somewhat dependent on weather.  If conditions are not right, then it will be postponed until that evening possibly or even the next day.  But as it stands just now, Monday is the day. Osprey expert Roy Dennis will be ringing and tagging the birds for us.

Many of you I know will be watching, so I thought I would explain what will take place and what you will/might see.  I'm afraid that you will not see very much.  For safety reasons, both for us involved and of course the birds, ringing and tagging takes place on the ground, not at the nest, so all you will really see is when the chicks are removed from the nest and then a little later, placed back.

Firstly, you will hear EJ give her alarm call and leave the nest.  The chicks will respond to this and slump down into the nest and remain motionless.  This is a survival strategy whereby their camouflage is such that they might go unnoticed by any airborne predators like crows flying overhead.  We though aren't that easily duped.

Next you may here our voices - and before any of you ask, no, we will not be giving anyone a name check over the microphone into cyberspace!  The ladder is already in place, left there from a few weeks ago when we had the fishing line incident etc.  We ought not need to alter its position, but you might hear the clunking of ladders.

A mysterious pair of hands will then appear.  Each chick in turn will be carefully bagged up to be brought to the ground.  Our plan is to satellite tag only two of the three chicks, the third chick will be ringed first and promptly, and replaced in the nest complete with bling.  The other two will be taken out of sight of the nest, for the longer proceedure of having tags fitted, this will give EJ the chance to return to the nest and the third chick. If EJ doesn't return to the nest, please do not be alarmed, she'll be there, but may well just be perch in the nearby dead tree 10m from the nest, where you will not be able to see her.

Once tagging is complete, the two chicks will then also be returned to the nest, ladder removed and we retreat from site.  Whilst we are at the nest we'll have a further opportunity to check for and remove any fishing line, and buff the camera lens.

All three birds will be ringed, weighed, measured, sexed..... and named.  I know you've all been clamouring to know the names and thank you for all the suggested names and suggested naming- threads that we might follow.  There have been some good suggestions, some.... less good, shall we say.  But thanks all the same.

They are to be called:

Rothes (pronounced Roth-es).  This is a primary school north of us here, and both last year and this we received a significant contribution towards the project from someone connected with the school.  The third chick last year, that died in the nest in mid-June, pre-tagging, was scheduled to be called Rothes, so we are going ahead with that name this year.  The other two are to be called Mallachie and Garten, the two lochs here at the reserve.  All names are effectively unisex so the, as yet undetermined sexes of our brood does not matter.

I trust you approve.  Yes, I know, there'll be those of you out there, who like these names and those that don't, others that wanted Norse names, relatives of Odin etc, but there you have it, Rothes, Mallachie and Garten are this years' birds.  The ref's decision is final.  Please do not harangue us about these names, it's a done deal.  Dissenting, name-debate blog comment will not be published, sorry, but I just envisage heaps of them and we will not, in any case change the names now.

The ringing event is not a public event - the osprey staff team and volunteers will be present, so please do not be tempted to turn up to join us.  Ringing and tagging is carried out strictly under-licence and it is not a public event, sorry.  Later that day or the next day we will post some details of the sizes, weight and sexes etc plus some photographs of proceedings.

Can I please ask you all again to be patient with all things blog, whether awaiting comments to be published, answers to questions, latest news and up-dates.  As if we haven't been run off our feet already so this season so far, July and August are our busiest months, plus staff have annual leave to take which can leave us short-staffed at times, yet with no let up in all that we have to do, servicing the blog included.  So bear with us folks, please.  Many thanks.

many thanks for the latest info richard. i, for one, think the names are perfect for our young ospreys. keeps with all things scottish. hope all goes well for ringing/tagging procedure. only hope oldest chick doesnt attempt to fly before then lol-caught a glimpse of her about 1pmish flapping her wings and trying to get airborne and i swear with each jump she seemed to stay off the ground that little bit longer. just watched odin bring fish in, no sign of ej, 1 chick attempted a few pecks, then another dragged it around nest and is now huddled over it attempting to feed his/herself.

Thank you very much for the long explanation while you are so busy.  I love the names.  I think most of the suggestions were for fun and conversation on the blog so hopefully not too much complaint will be heard.  I really appreciate this blog for the friendliness, helpfulness and entertainment of all the bloggers as well as the contributions of the LG team who certainly work over and above the call of duty. Love to Rothes, Malachie and Garten.

100% approval here! Why should anyone not approve? "Odin" was a guess at this magnificent bird's possible Scandinavian origin, but to continue the theme would be to ignore EJ's contribution! Anyway, it's good that the names reflect their birthplace - Garten especially - and no-one could deny that the LG team thoroughly deserve to have the honour of choosing names. I trust that there will be some sort of celebration on Monday evening, psooibly with a small glass of lemonade and a thin slice of cake?

Richard, great news!  I, for one, love the names.  Know Lochs Garten and Mallachie well and both are beautiful.  Sorry we're sometimes impatient - it's just enthusiasm.  We all know how very, very busy you all are and we really appreciate the time and trouble you and your team take to keep us all informed.  Good luck to all for Monday (or thereafter).  I'll be making a point of being glued to the laptop and I'm sure everyone else will as well.

Thank you for the detailed information.

We have come a long way since the fishing line incident and thanks to you all the chicks are healthy and developing well.

All the publicity you are receiving is good news but must add considerably to your work load.

I for one will remain patient and wait for news as it is announced.

We can't visit again this year but will be up there again next year.

We did manage a trip to Rutland Water to see the Ospreys there but our next trip will be down south to see the Swan Upping on the Thames then down to Abbotsbury swannery.

Thank you - all the staff at Loch Garten - for all the information you have given us both on here and when we were up there to visit you all.

Richard, I love the names! Good one, I for one will not be arguing with you over those. Whoever chose them has good taste, and I think it's a wonderful idea to call them after the Lochs at the reserve. I'm so glad you are doing the ringing and tagging soon, when I watch those three 'chicks' trying their wings I'm holding my breath in case one of them actually has lift off! I've not had a particularly good day, but this news has really cheered me up, for which I thank you all at LG, for the care you take, the work you do and for putting up with us bloggers, I don't know how you do it all, but I'm very grateful.

Thank you Richard. You turned the camera off last year and I am delighted we can watch this year, even if it is just hands!, and following your informative blog we won't worry (much).  Interesting you had Rothes ready for last year - that must mean the names are decided early on. Good luck to Rothes, Mallachie and Garten.

I love the names Richard - it's good to have local names.  The loch theme can continue for a few years, I would imagine, as there's plenty round about you!

Looking forward to the ringing on Monday - remember to give the camera lens a polish (not that it's bad this year) but I'm sure it must be a little bit dirty by now!

My girlfriend Martina and I, started watching the Osprey chicks 3 weeks ago, after one of my followers on Twitter suggested looking at the website. We've been hooked ever since.

Initially I was confused by what had happened with last years chicks so sat down and read through most of the blog posts from last year and earlier this.

It is absolutely fascinating to see these rare birds up close and personal and I can imagine that it's hard not to get somewhat attached when watching for so long. I can see by the comments some people get very pascionate about the whole thing.

I think what you and your team are doing as far as keeping the webcam running and keeping the blog updated and even commenting on some individual comments, is far above and beyond your call of duty and I can say on behalf of Martina and myself we are very grateful indeed.

We have gained new insite into the life of the Osprey and find the whole thing awe inspiring.

I'm and ex-pat living in Switzerland and Martina is from the Czech Republic.

I have a question regarding the geotags. I assume these are specially made but why are they only available from the US? Why are they so expensive and have you manage to recover any of the used one yet? Answer when you have time, you have more imporatnt things to do I know.

Thankyou again to everyone at Loch Garten for all of your hard work. I am now looking at how we can help you continue this great work.

All the very best, Paul & Martina

A very good choice of names, they trip off the tongue easily and it is nice to have 'local names for local birds'. I have no complaints re responses from LG and agree the 'ref's' decision is final.....so NO RED CARD for me.

Annette....yes it is Scotland and we do have some good

Richard love the names and I hope all will agree.  So nice to finally find out and they are perfect for our perfect family.  I know us bloggers can be impatient at times but we know that you will make an entry when you are able and as things are going so well we really do not have anything to worry about and hopefully that will continue.  I thanks you David and Debby and all the staff for allowing me to share this story.  Those little white fluffy blobs in the nest are now magnificent ospreys and there is much wing flapping and exercising going on now and I am making the most of them while they are still on the nest.

Richard, no complaints at all about the choice of names, they are dignified names suitable for the majestic birds these chicks are fast becoming and we think it most appropriate that they are named after locations close to your wonderful centre. Better Half will be glued to the laptop, I will be more gainfully employed but I'm hoping that some kind soul (BigRab?) will be posting a clip on utube. Thankyou for explaining so clearly what will happen, hopefully it will forstall any anxieties that us bloggers so easily generate for ourselves.  After all the conjecture I can't wait to hear what sexes they are (I'm going for #2 male, others female, but ready to be proved wrong!) Guess it'll be an exciting but tense time for you - Good Luck!

Thanks for the update Richard I was getting quite worried as to when you were going to do the tagging as the chicks seem to be getting close to fledging. They are certainly getting very good at flapping their wings and lifting their feet off the nest.

I love the names Rothes, Mallachie and Garten, they have a nice ring about them, lets hope they bring lots of luck to our three beautiful chicks.

Roll on Monday dying to know which one is which and also what sex they are!

Thanks again for the wonderful job you are all doing, will be up to see you all end of July!!

I think the names are great Richard, I especially like Mallachie. I hope it all goes well for you and the weather is kind to you on Monday. I hope to get the chance to meet you when we are up there next week. We will be across a few times during the fortnight so no doubt we will catch you if you ever stray from your pc that is.

I think next year as this blog grows and grows you are going to need a dedicated internet team to cope with the demand. The blog is much busier than last year which is great for you and the Ospreys themselves.

Richard, personally I love the names, they're Scottish!!  The norse theme was a bit of fun, just as our nicknames were but I have always thought of Odin as a "Loch Garten" bred bird.  Odin is just so magnificient, where else could he possibly have hailed from? (Krypton - yes, I know!!).  No he is definately Loch Garten bred hence Scottish.

It is very touching using the name "Rothes".  The kids will be pleased but who is who?

Could you please confirm if the names are respectively ie is chick #1 Rothes,  chick  2 "Mallachie" and chick #3 "Garten"?

May I ask just one question? How do you know which is the middle and which the youngest? It's hard these days to know which is which out of them all, but especially the youngest two. Sorry to be a pain.

I love the names !! I will pray for good conditions for the ringing - always stressful for chicks, parent birds and 'humans'. Really appreciate that you are laying down the law this year - hope that it makes everyone realise that your word IS law.

i thought it was just the video connection on my computer that had gone-kept getting message saying "no internet connection" but reading through blogs i now know its not. i was beginning to get worried as i haven't seen/heard anything since about 6.30ish-even tried a different computer. thanks everyone for letting us know we are in the same boat so to speak. thinking back, the video went off just after ej arrived back on the nest, so maybe one of the young got over excited at the thought of mum feeding them that fish that they flapped a bit too hard and dislodged something in the camera post!!

The names are just perfect. Good luck with the ringing and tagging on Monday, I hope it goes very smoothly. I am pleased that it will be Roy, his book 'A Life of Ospreys' (am I allowed to mention it?) is one of my most treasured possessions. Thank you so much for letting us know, we really do appreciate the extra time you all put in to keep us avid bloggers up to speed with everything.

Unfortunately for me I have a training course to attend on Monday morning early so will miss the bits we will be able to see. Am very much hoping BigRab74 will be putting the clips on Youtube for watching later - pretty pleeeeeze :))

Good 'strong'names for our 3 young ospreys, after reading all the blogs I feel I've known their names for ages.  I love the stage Rothes, Mallachie & Garten are at now, knowing there wings have a purpose but haven't quite mastered what that is! kind of like me with swimming sessions at the moment, thank heavens for arm bands:) Welcome to the blog baku, Paul & Martina........

The names are great and it's good that they are local to where the chicks were hatched. How lovely for the children of Rothes to have a chick named after their school, I bet they are thrilled !!

Richard, I have a lovely picture in my mind of all our interactions on this website:  all of us (hungry bloggers) squarking away incessantly, soliciting more and more information from you,  and you and the Team (parent team) patiently working away at what needs to be done around the 'nest', warding of 'intruders' (things which go wrong), and doing your best to keep us all well-fed and satisfied and growing in knowledge.  Thank heavens you can pull us back into line every now and then! LOL!  How you must long for the end of the season, when you can 'do an EJ' and hang out the 'Gone Fishing' sign!  We really do appreciate all you do, you know.  ;-)

Really glad that you are continuing the local naming "tradition" - long may it continue, so it can appropriately reflect their origins. Can't believe the growth spurt of all 3 chicks in the last 2 weeks - no wonder EJ has taken to fishing again to enable her to get some space!!!!!!! Looking forward to seeing some photos of the ringing and tagging.

Excellent names. It's great to keep involving the local schoolchildren and I've always thought Loch Mallachie, though smaller, is even more beautiful than Loch Garten. Perhaps it's helped by the short but lovely walk needed to get there. Well worth doing for anyone visiting the osprey centre. If I remember correctly, Mallachie the osprey won't be the first creature with that name at Loch Garten. I'm sure I remember a small friendly black cat called Mallachie during my volunteering stints some 20 years or so ago. Of course the camp was next to Inchdryne at that time so it could have belonged to Roy Dennis, who lived there then. Any other volunteers from those days remember?

I love the names Rothes, Mallachie & Garten :-) I won't be around to watch "hands" and disappearing osprey chicks on Monday as I'm peeling my behind off the sofa to go to the Central Belt for a few days. Dinosaurs are taking us to Glasgow and we're popping in to visit World of Wings on the way. They were at Gardening Scotland just after the fishing line incident and had loads of people asking them for an update and were grateful to me for updating them on the situation so they could pass on to others. Anyway, hope all goes well for the tagging and ringing on Monday or whenever you manage it. Could you maybe paint a different coloured dot on their foreheads too so we can easily work out which one is which? Only kidding!! I'm not sure which day we're heading to LG in the next couple of weeks but if you see a family of 3 each with a LG Bloggers T-shirt on (armed with chocolate cake) then that'll be us! See you then!!

The very BEST of names Richard, I applaud all three. Thank you so much for such a great informative blog! Trust you type with more than two fingers!! Now, please would any of you Scots bloggers tell me on which syllable the stress lies in the name Mallachie (phonetic ‘key’ sound at the end – thanks for that Richard). I’m just hoping it’s not on the second syllable as that would sound too Irish – nothing against Ireland or the Irish!! Just that this is a Scottish name. And me too Jenny - big lump in the throat. No longer chicks or juveniles but personalities. PAULAP - try and eliminate Rothes and Mallachie and you’ll be left with Garten. Rothes has a very noticeable golden burnt orangey nape to the neck. It really ‘glows’ so study the back of the Osprey necks, OK? The general colouration is also more like EJ’s. Mallachie’s colouration is more like Odin’s and there is a broad ‘white white ‘ band above and curving around the dark eye stripe. The other two have narrower white bands that have greyer colouration in too. Garten (at the moment, it could change with growth) has a straight hem of white at the base of the tail (the other two have hems that are V shaped, sort of, following line of the tail). I do hope this helps. As Richard says, just look and look and look! Good luck.

One of the things often discussed at ringing time is stress bars on the chicks wings. These are supposed to denote how well fed the chicks have been. I do not see these chicks as having too many stress bars. I do not think that this was discussed at all last year. I guess poor Deshar had one or two stress bars on his wings.

I didn't realise how much time I spent (at work) watching/quickly glancing at the live webcam until now when it's broken. Do you think that Odin finally got fed up with not having enough room to land on the nest and decided to land on the camera instead. Either that or one of the chicks got a direct hit with it's poo. There has been some very near misses with that already.

Lesley, I believed the mugs and T-shirts thing, too! And Jane A, glad you're back with us. Hope you're feeling happier. I asked about the stress on syllables in Mallachie, too, after all Bennachie in Aberdeenshire is pronounced BennaCHIE! And being Scots-Irish/Ulster Scots, I pronounce the last syllable with a soft 'ch' not a hard 'k'! Look forward to moving pictures again but going to have a look at the stills.

Oh,..many thanks patriciat. MallaCHIE it is then. All three are so lovely. Rothes is beautiful and I'm sure will get a flock of mates to choose from in due time. Mallachie is handsome and I wonder if this one is not a boy after all (as I used to think)- although so like Odin in my opinion. Garten, well, Garten has a special air about her/him with a very appealing face and since still actually looking  smaller (I know there is 4 and 2 days difference between Garten and the other two) I now wonder if this one is the boy. I am so looking forward to finding out for sure.

Regarding Pronounciation of Mallachie - Richard is correct, here in the Highlands we say Mall-a-kee. In Aberdeenshire, my husband says that the hill is pronounced  Benn-a- hee! I won't argue with him since he was born there! But, we are all going to know which wonderful osprey is which! Its an enjoyable diversion while we wait for the boffins to fix things. I will be sat watching at my pc on Monday, to watch the chicks being removed from the nest, for the ringing, plus tagging of the two eldest chicks and hope the weather will be fine for you, to do it then.

So many people will be waiting in anticipation, to find out whether we have all female chicks, or all males or, as many think, two females and one male but it could be two males and one female....STOP...my head is going round in circles!!!

Very soon, we will all know at last, what they all are and for me,I will be really glad, to be put out of the suspense, of guessing any longer...thank goodness for that !!!!  :)

It has long been an affectionate standing joke amongst Scottish people that 'English folk' can't get their tongues around the soft 'ch' sound without sounding like they are clearing their throats!  Accordingly a lot of Gaelic words have been anglified down through the centuries - Mallachie is one of many such words.  It is derived from Loch Mallachaidh - meaning 'Loch of the Curse' - story has it that a water 'kelpie' (water spirit) haunts the loch and will drag off anyone attempting to cross its peaty waters.

HeatherB - ye'll never win a fight with an Aberdeenshire man!  I was born in the North East and Bennachie has always been pronounced BennaCHEE with a soft 'ch' sound as in the Scottish loch (not lock!).  Bennachie is another anglification from Beinn a chithe meaning 'Hill of the mist/rain' - there is another Gaelic anglification, but given it has a reference to female anatomy, I will refrain from typing that here!

Finally, I thought I'd put another music video together - enjoy!

From looking at the still images off and on all day it all seems very quiet on the nest. Only once (maybe twice) when I've been looking it's seemed that the chicks were being fed. EJ seems to have been absent for much of the day as well. I know you're really busy but I was wondering if we could have a very brief update as to what's been happening?

Just to add weight to the pronunciation issue, esspecially in a local context (we all obviously need to know how to address our second hatched correctly)... here in Forres (about 30 miles from the nest) we have a whole area known as Manachie, with many roads, streets, braes etc. all with Manachie and Mannachie in the title. All have always been "man-a-kee"... I think therefore there can be little doubt middle chick is "mal-a-kee", and a great name it is too.

I notice also that not one negative comment has been posted about the names for the chicks (that has got through anyway LOL) I think that shows what a great blog this is to be invloved with and what nice people that post. Sending a big "group hug" out to everyone:)

Thanks again LG

I just watched BigRab's video  titled "3rd Chick Hatching". It was  May 26th. That is only a little over a month ago and look at how tiny the chicks are in that  video !!  WOW,  and look at them now

Hi TISH......I have been watching most of the day and haven't seen the Hobby yet..you are lucky! They are beautiful birds and I watched them last year, from hatching to fledging.

Really nice to have you back.

Maureen McCann, do you know if LOTL are ringing/tagging this year.  I know that last year they decided against it.  think they're expecting the eldest to be taking flight over the next few days!!! so its not sounding like they will be

Tish-the goshawk nearer to where I like has a dead white pigeon on it that mum or dad has bought in for usually the boy who comes back for food to eat. if you zoom to make it full size you will see the heads of two grey pidgeons eaten this week, eh. Jillian

We are all packed and ready to go, 8:30 start tomorrow with a 7 hour drive ahead of us. I am sooooooooooo excited to visit Loch Garten for the first time. Roy Dennis' book on the Life of Ospreys has just arrived from Ebay today just in time so I am really looking forward to reading that in Bonny Scotland

Well, I got a lot done today: Researched kitchen appliances, bought stuff online, went to the gym - and, if the webcam isn't fixed, may even cook dinner with both eyes on the food!  It's July 4 here tomorrow, so may be watching fireworks tomorrow evening (of course, not as exciting as watching ospreys)!

Again, looking at the recent blogs, I have noticed a bird sitting where once you went to the Goshawks nest. Is it a hobby then???  Picture is coming over a bit fuzzy but you can make her out.

BigRab74, thanks for the 'right from the horse's mouth' explanation of the pronunciation of Mallachie. I had my suspicions that those in the Highlands who pronounced 'ch' as 'k' were probably incomers from below the line! but I didn't want to offend anyone - we're all friends, aren't we? Thanks, too, for the reminder of the likely derivation of the name. I'd heard it before but forgotten. Several years ago, on an October late afternoon, I was walking from the Loch Garten car-park to Loch Mallachie. As I approached the loch, I got a strong feeling almost of dread and beat hasty retreat. I'm quite prepared to believe the kelpie appears at such times, though the loch is very beautiful. A Google search brings up lots of photos for those who haven't seen the loch. Haven't checked out your latest video but I'm sure it's brilliant.

BigRab : Many thanks for sharing your video clips. I really enjoy watching them as do so many others. I also thought the "where do I put this stick" is terrific and again had me LOL. My husband thinks I'm mad.

Am really missing not seeing the family, but is has been made easier by watching all your clips. So please keep them comming :)

BigRab 74 - that video is brilliant and soooo funny.  Your best one yet.  I actually got a lot of work done today but have missed the webcam.  If it's back working Monday I might just be able to see the chicks disappear from the nest before I have to leave for court.  I hope all goes well.

LYNETTE....Yes picture is very fuzzy but it is Mrs. Hobby. I hope the camera is sorted out by tomorrow. I watched last year and the 'Hobblettes' are gorgeous.

SOOSIN, I don't think they are but I will ask.....if you don't ask you don't get!!!!

Is it me or do you think the LOTL chicks are a very 'polite' and sedate little couple? Compared to our three characters. LOL

Just to say that there are some of us ( maybe quite a few ) who are ardent followers of the blog but who don't contribute  regulary but who still appreciate all the work done by the LG team and the updates of blogger from all the airts. Thanks to all!

Best wishes for the ringing and tagging on Monday.  Love the good Scottish names!

Richard and Teams.....just trying to help re camera problem. LOL

Over the last couple of days I have had to wait ages for getting onto blogs page and to submit blog. NO PROBLEMS WITH OTHER SITES.  Do you think the 'net' is overloading at times? OR as BARBARA JEAN said.....has Garten done something to the camera.???

Soosin, I was at LOTL last Saturday and was told they wouldn't be ringing/tagging this year... I think it's a pity not to be able to identify the osprey chicks in the future but I suppose these decisions aren't made lightly...

Hi Richard, quick question (when you've got a moment!!) I read that EJ has brought in another fish today, she really seems to be making a habit of it now. Just how unusual is it for a female with unfledged chicks to do this, has it been reported with any other females anywhere? Good Luck with sorting out your gremlins and thanks to bigRab for the latest clip, fantastic stick sequence, eased my withdrawal symptoms a bit!

So sorry to hear you are still having problems with the web-cam Richard it must be so frustrating especially when we all keep asking you when it will be fixed. We ll know that you are trying to do your best and will get it fixed as soon as is humanly possible. Thank you for that!

Can I just add that anyone who has not seen any of Big Rabs videos should get on You Tube and watch them they are wonderful - and really brighten up your day - I guarantee they will make you smile.

Finally can I just wish "Happy 4th of July" to all our American Friends, hope you all have a great day!!

Fingers crossed (and toes) for the camera to be fixed for Monday's tagging!

Some technology gremlin obviously thought we were spending too much time watching ospreys and we should be doing our housework. LOL

Annette in SoCal – When the chicks head south you can follow them on Google Earth. Then there is the bird feeder to watch – with the squirrels providing as much entertainment as the birds. (Last Christmas when the LG Team left a custom-designed super bird feeder so the hungry were not neglected over the break, the innovative squirrels chewed through the supporting rope, releasing the whole pantry of food.) And last season I watched Carcass-cam on the New Forest site - fascinating. There is plenty to help your addiction until the ospreys return in March.
