Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Mauritania via Western Sahara...

Mallachie has made it to Mauritania. After we left her in Algeria at 6am yesterday morning (14th) she headed off in a SW direction getting to Western Sahara by 12noon. She continued on and reached Mauritania by 6pm. She continued on until about 8pm, when she stopped to roost. At 10am this morning (15th), the latest point I have, she was about 150km E of Bir Moghrein.

Rothes meanwhile had another fairly relaxed day movement wise. After roosting on Ilha Caravela, she spent the whole of yesterday on there, roosting there again last night. The latest point I have for her is also 10am this morning. It's probably to early to think this might be her prefered island out of all of them...

Thanks to this week's short term residential volunteers who entered all the data for me today.

More tomorrow.

Thanks Alice and thanks to the volunteers for entering the data. Mallachie is very close now to Rothes track through Mauretania. Perhaps she is heading for the same island group. Really interesting to see where she ends up.

O Good Girl, Mallachie, taking the sensible route!

Thanks as usual, Alice - and the volunteers.

Thank you for all the updates Alice.  It is great to hear our "chicks" are doing well.  Long may it continue.  Thank you to the volunteers for helping you with the data.  Pru

Does anyone know if these islands that Rothes visits have any other water (rivers, lakes etc.) or is she happy with the sea fish?

Thanks for the update Alice.  Glad the girls seem to be doing the right things.  And glad your water supply is OK again.  Hope it stays that way!

Thanks Alice ... and the volunteers, for the update. It would be very strange if Mallachie and Rothes ended up wintering in the same area! Still wish we had heard something about Garten ... although I am convinced she is absolutely fine, she always was a feisty wee thing :))

Thanks Alice and Volunteers. So good to hear Mallachie is continuing on this route and, as you say Rothes, could now have settled.

Thanks Alice the highlight of the day for me.  3 cheers for Mallachie and bless her heart for doing the right things and giving us no cause for worry.  Who knows Rothes may have chosen her home so it will be interesting over the next few days to see if she actually does stay there.

I am off for a few days holiday from Sunday returning Friday but will be taking the laptop with me so I can keep up with the news.

Sandy

Sorry if it was'nt clear about the Daily Express but I live in Scotland so it was the Scottish edition of the paper on page 23 I thought that as it mentioned that bird watchers from all over the world are watching or tracking Rothes & Mallachie it would have been in the English version too

Thanks Alice for the update. Rothes is obviously very happy to stay where she is. Isn't it exciting to think that Mallachie might end up in the same area. Glad your volunteers are coming in useful LOL!!!

Thanks, Alice. Come on Mallachie. You're doing fine. After everyrthing you had us worrying about when you were no. 3 in the pecking order, you're doing brilliantly.

It's a little early to be celebrating but both girls have done really well so far - aganist the odds too. Am wondering whether there is more danger for them on arrival in their wintering sites than on the journey after all but then this is what the tagging is all about. That is not to diminish the wonder  and risk of migration - just my ponderings. EJ & Odin's girls had a good start in life despite the incident with the fishing line - which seems such a long time ago now. Stay safe ospreys & bloggers alike!

Thanks Alice great to hear that all is still well with Rothes and that Mallachie is now in Mauritania, taking a more westerly route through the Sahara now, thank goodness:)

I hope the girls do meet up and we will be able to tell if they (2 anyway)  are near to each other....I too wish we knew where Garten is..... although..... she was always one to look after herself, despite being the youngest ,she was the feistiest of the three and will just as likely be bossing a group of ospreys around even as I write this LOL :)

Thankyou Alice and volunteers  -we can all relax knowing the girls are safe and well for another day!(whatever shall we do next Spring when you're all far too busy to give us daily updates, I wonder?) I will try not to think about it!

Lorraine - your comment re Garten made me smile - I can picture the little bossy-boots, too!
