Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Into Senegal...

Well Mallachie has travelled a fair distance this weekend. When we left her on Friday (with data up to 6pm on Thursday, 15th) she was in the north of Mauritania. Over the last three days she has headed S, passing Zouerate in Mauritania and heading into Western Sahara and past Choum on Friday and roosting near Atar back in Mauritania. Continuing S on Saturday she past Akjoujit, roosting nearby. Sunday saw her journey S continue, roosting S of Mal. Today (19th) she entered Senegal (just) - she was close to Belkindi at 11am this morning. She's pretty close to Reserve de Faune du Ferlo-Nord to her S and Reserve Sylvo-Pastorale des six Forages to her SW - perhaps she'll pay them a visit?

Meanwhile Rothes has had a less travelled weekend, spending most of Friday and Saturday on Ilha Caravela. Yesterday, though she headed N  onto Ilha de Jeta, before heading onto the mainland and Cachalame, where she roosted. Today she continued on N to close to Igim, which is where she was at 10am this morning.

Thanks to this week's short term volunteers who put the data in for me while I sharpened my chainsaw after this morning's deadwood creation session.

More tomorrow.

Thank you for the update Alice.  It's great to hear our birds are doing well.  Interesting to read from one of the bloggers also that Talisman (one of Roy Dennis' tagged birds) is very close to where Rothes is.  Thank you to the volunteers, once again, for inputting the data.  We appreciate it very much as you know.   You take care with that chainsaw now.  Pru

Great to have an update, Alice, Thanks.  You are a tough one, digging drains was it, and sharpening chainsaws & all- as Pru says, take care!

Gosh a chainsaw Alice, that sounds dangerous. Hope you have all the protective gear on when you're using it!

Good to hear news of the girls. Mallachie is doing some mileage. She obviously hasn't decided where to stop yet!

Thanks for keeping us up to date and thank to the volunteers for putting all the data in!!

Thanks for the update Alice. It is interesting to note that Mallachie crossed into Senegal very near to the same place that Talisman was on 14.10.2009. Perhaps they will all meet up later for a fish supper.

Much appreciated update Alice. Sounds like we had similar days today, servicing chainsaws - though it's more fun using them, isn't it!

It's a great relief to know that Mallachie has got her skates on and is nearing an area where she can stop for a much needed meal. Also good to know that Rothes is being Rothes.

Is there any job you don't do, Alice ? Don't know how you find the time to write these updates for us, so I really do mean thankyou and thanks to your volunteers also.

I now hope Mallachie does exactly as Sandy says she may do and that is to find the right area, eat and rest.

Sounds like Rothes has gone a bit North to meet little sister and show her the way to the best places for fishing!  Thanks Alice, once again, and the volunteers.

Great to hear data for Rothes all ok.  Mallachie is certainly pressing on isn't she.  I'm thinking Rothes will spend the winter between all the islands.  I hope Mallachie soon settles on a reserve.  Look forward to tonight's update.  Keep safe Alice!! x

Thanks Alice...good to know they are both doing ok :)

What is a creative weekend?

Is it doing wood sculptures?...I did see some last year at the Scottish Wildlife Park near to you.

I bet you are glad of the help from the volunteers, as you have such a busy time keeping everything going at LG, all seasons of the year, it seems!!
