Loch Garten osprey diary

The ospreys at Loch Garten have people across the world gripped in their tale of violence, adultery and... well... fishing.  More...

Up-date & news + Powering Viewing & Learning Opportunities at Loch Garten

As promised, a more detailed update on last week's data on Rothes and Mallachie. Apologies for the unintentional concern I caused on Monday by not mentioning Mallachie - I'll remedy that now. Mallachie is still in The Gambia, in the same area near Sotokoi. She's moving about but isn't get caught doing anything drastically exciting - like going anywhere new, but the area she's in is good enough for her...

Rothes meanwhile had a quiet week near Varela until after 9am on 27th (Friday) when she headed S, reaching I. de Unhacomo soon after 5pm, where I'm assuming she roosted as that's the island she was near on Saturday morning at 9am. On Saturday 28th she headed SW over to Ilha de Orango - the last point of the week. I'll update everything again on Monday.      -   Alice

Read on for a short exciting bit from Richard:

A man from Gambia phoned our Edinburgh office last week to say that he had seen an osprey. He left his number so I have just phoned him back. About 8 days ago, he saw a bird with a leg ring, with letters LY.  Now, as you'll  know,  one of last year's tagged birds, Nethy was ringed AY, so you can imagine our hearts leaping at the thought that .....just maybe..... he might have read the ring incorrectly.  However, the man is completely confident that the ringed bird he saw was definitely LY , bah!  Though he was less sure about the ring colour.  I've been in touch with Roy Dennis to see if we can identify his bird, and I'll then let the man in Gambia know.  He's a very interested birdwatcher of 23 years standing.  It was good of him to take the time & trouble to contact us. He saw the bird near Sanyang, Gambia.

There was a beautiful, elegant drake Pinatil on Loch Garten on 30th November, only the fourth reserve record.    -    Richard

Regular viewers of the osprey web-cam, the red squirrel feeder-cam and followers of the blog, will recall those, all too often occasions, during the past summer and indeed in previous summers when there were interruptions to your viewing.  Add to that, that annoying humming noise on the osprey nest microphone and the, at times, less than perfect picture quality etc.  All these problems and vulnerabilities have one source – the generator that powers all that we do at the Loch Garten Osprey Centre, powering the lighting, all our camera systems, the TV monitors, web-cam links, nest microphones and our retail operation equipment - all are powered by a generator.

We have been inspiring people about ospreys at Loch Garten for 50 years now, for the first 30 years without power at all, for the next ten years with power from a petrol generator and for the last ten years, from a gas powered generator - at least latterly from a cleaner and greener option.  However, as long as we operate with a generator, not only do we remain vulnerable to its failure, but it limits what improvements we can make to the current visitor experience and what future developments can be made.  The generator is barely able to cope with and keep up with the changes in technology, for example the demand for faster, better web connections.

To have a mains power supply has been an aspiration of ours for many years - actually more a personal crusade of mine for nigh-on 20 years!  It would solve so many of our problems and shortcomings, not least of all security and reliability of supply, but also improve no-end, what we currently do, and create so much more future potential for the Osprey Centre.

 The benefits are multiple.

·          Reliability - generators are prone to mechanical breakdown, and boy, have we had our share of these, or what?  For example during the 2007 season, our gas generator died in the first week of our season.  We got it back from a very expensive repair in the last week of our season.  The stop gap was an on-hire diesel generator, needing filling with fuel every day and all the faff that that involved – jerry cans, spillages etc etc.

 ·          The visitor experience - without the noise, smell and throb of a generator, the ambiance and thus the visitor experience would be greatly improved.  I am sure the wildlife would approve too!

 ·          Technological advances - with almost year-on-year additions to our technology, be it new cameras, web-cam links, the EPOS cash register system in the shop etc, we are getting to the limit of capacity.  New technologies like high-definition cameras have come on stream and we would like to move with the times and up-grade our equipment, but to do so ahead of having a mains power supply would be silly.

 ·          Enable RSPB to source and buy “green” energy from renewable sources.

Therefore, we are hoping to install mains power next year.  However, it will be very expensive, to the tune of £109,000.  Yes indeed, ouch!  The reason for the expense is the Osprey Centre's remote location.  The nearest transformer from which to take power is 2.3km away and the cable has to be trenched underground all that way.  RSPB does have some funds to put towards this project and we are of course exploring all formal grant-aiding channels, but even if applications to these succeed, we are still facing a significant shortfall.

Therefore, we are asking for your help, again.  Many of you, I know, very kindly helped towards costs of the osprey satellite-tracking project (thank you, again), but we hope that you may be able to help us with this too.  It would be great if the blog readership could raise £7,000 towards the mains power project by February 2010, the date by which time we will know whether the full funding package is in place and that we can proceed.

If you can contribute to this project at all, please click on the following link:

http://www.rspb.org.uk/lgpowerdonate

We will keep you informed as to how this fund-raising effort progresses, but I am though obliged to say that if we either raise more than the sum required, or if we do not raise sufficient money for the project to proceed, then the money will go towards wider work here at Abernethy.

I know we are currently in belt-tightening times and in the run up to the expense that is Christmas, but if you did feel able to help towards this project, it would be very much appreciated, not just by us, but by all those who have a connection with Loch Garten, past, present and future, both actual and virtual visitors.  Please help if you can.  Many thanks.

We are off to a good start.  I recently received a cheque for £200 on behalf of the Loch Garten Bloggers from sales of some LGB merchandise.  I thought that this should kick-off this appeal.  So thanks to all, who contributed to that fine start.

(The map, of Rothes & Mallachie's whereabouts will be up-dated on Monday 30th, but the blog not until later next week).

Richard, just a short note. I am happy to contribute but I have a wacky idea

Can the army/other Forces/ help with the trenching? Even local business. No idea if this is feasible.

Richard I am sure we will do it and ask everyone to dig deep :))

I am glad you used the Loch Garten Bloggers cheque towards this and I was glad to buy the teeshirts and mugs etc, along with all the other people, knowing we were helping in a small way towards whatever you needed most.

I have made a donation today and wish you every success with this... thank you at Loch Garten for all you do for our beloved Ospreys and Wildlife in general too.

Richard donation sent and althogh not as much as I would like to send i am sure every donation however small will help you achieve your aim.  You and your staff really deserve to have the mains electricity as it will certainly make things a lot easier for you in the future.  I believe all of us bloggers feel part of an extended family and what a good result it was this year.  You and your staff have given us such an education, not just about ospreys, but all the other work you do up there.  Fingers crossed it will not take long to raise the money required, good luck anyway you all deserve it.

I will be delighted to help you out Richard, I have made so many new friends through Loch Garten and the Ospreys. I know it seems a silly question and I am sure you have gone down that route already, but is there any chance you could get Lottery Funding?

It is a Community Project you have been going for 50 years and you have brought together over the years people from all walks of life from all over the world. You do fantastic work....surely you must be able to get some, if not all the money from the Lottery...I can't think of a more worthwhile cause.

I am sure everyone will pull together and you will have your money in no-time.

PS what about the toilets with anything that is left over LOL!!!

Good luck you deserve every penny!!

Richard I remember asking you about the electricty early in the season and also discussing it with you when I visited in July. I was so pleased today to see that you are trying to raise funds for it, would Awards for all (Lottery) help?

I have just received a grant of £3,000 for playgroup toys and equipment and I know how hard and time consuming it is applying for these things however when it happens it is fantastic.

As soon as Iv'e told my husband we will send a donation this week too. Make sure you put this on the community site in case people are not regulalry checking this one each Monday.

Good luck.

Jillian.

More than happy to oblige, Richard. As I, and many others, have said before, following the goings on at LG is preferable to watching TV any day of the week (and we don't get any choice in subsidising that medium!).

I'm sure that, along with all of us that comment here, the numerous visitors to this site that are not members will wish to contribute to this necessary upgrade to facilities at LG.

I would love to be able to donate but as an RSPB member and Friend of Abernethy (have also donated to the recent appeal to save the Albatross) feel unable to do so at present.

SO many good causes needing our monies at present.

Good luck with the fund-raising.

The following article may help some of you understand a bit more about the problems that existed as regards toilet facilities before the arson attack of 1990.

If you wanted to spend the whole day at Loch Garten, you either had to have a very good strong bladder, take a trip nearly 2 miles to Boat of Garten for the nearest Public Toilets, or have a close encounter with the shrubs!!!!!!!!!!!

Many people came from far away and really had absolutely no idea that there were no toilet facilities at LG. It did little to enhance their LG experience. So the arson did in fact give the opportunity to look closely at the need to have toilet facilities - this was a point that many RSPB members of the time said had to be urgently addressed.

I think everyone who visits LG these days has no grounds for complaints about all the facilities and has every reason to be thankful to be able to enjoy the unbeatable experience, with a deal more comfort than was possible before 1990.

snh.heehawdevelopment.com/naturalcasestudynov07.com

All donations for further development will only continue to improve the whole ambience of a beautiful wild place, and I am sure it will be done with all the thought necesary not to spoil it.

Richard, yes, I'll chip my modest donation.

Gary's point (at top of list) is well worth following up. It's my understanding that charitable ventures can often persuade contractors to give "mate's rates", or even provide services at cost, if approached correctly by your contracts manager. The quid pro quo could be publicity at the grand opening, a plaque on the wall, or a special event for their benefit - especially useful to local companies who can reap the feelgood factor amongst the local community.

Best wishes, and my thanks too to all at LG

Richard, I already sponsored some trees, now it is a short piece of cable, including the gift aid bit. It is a real pleasure to help out a project, that is dear to my heart and gives pleasure to so many people and most of all takes care of some of these magnificent birds, the ospreys. I am sure that your supporters will not let you or them down.

Very pleased to donate for this.  Not only have I had hours of pleasure and interest, but the whole Loch Garten venture contributes so much to people's understanding of environmental and conservation issues.  I can't understand the problems with the toilets.  They are brilliant and part of the environment work.  I am always happy to find this type of toilet in conservation areas and think they should be used more, where density of population allows, for eco housing.

Hi Richard, I have today received the reminder about my membership renewal. Going back a bit, I think I recall that the Loch Garten code (PR08 ?) for crediting new memberships to your account, only applied in respect of  new joiners. Has this changed? Given your need for funds, it would be nice, if those like me who would wish you to receive the benefit, if the rules allow, could specify this. Please advise accordingly, many thanks and I look forward to seeing the progress towards your target in due course. No doubt there will be others who feel the same as I do.

Regards,

Richard, Gary's idea is not whacky reguarding the armed forces helping out.  Contact the Territorial Army and ask for help with the work.  They helped build the tiger enclosure at the Highland Wildlife Park for a fraction of the cost as they need the experience of building/doing things in peace time.

Jennie and Margobird,

I don't think there's any reason to worry about Mallachie - Google Earth updated last night and she has clearly been mooching around her chosen area near the Gambia river - it's just that she hasn't done anything different, I think.

The GE update for Rothes puzzles me - she seems to have been back to the Bijagos Is, and then returned to Varela. No doubt all will be revealed in the next blog.

ALAN PETRIE

Hi bjane

To answer your question about making a US$ contribution. go to a currency conversion site (I used Google) and input the amount you'd like to contribute and convert that to pounds (GBP).  Then put in the info as requested on the RSPB site.  At one point, you will be directed to another page since the US address info is different... but it's all very easy.   Your bank/credit card statement will reflect the currency conversion and the appropriate US$ amount.

Also, very exciting news about the osprey siting in Gambia.

Ahhhhhh, the mystery continues!

Who will it be?!?!?

ooooo, cool,   cannae wait to find out from whence it came what age  male or female  etc etc -  brill.

We had a holiday in Gambia a few years ago and during a visit to Wigtown in the summer previous to going we got a note  of ring numbers from their Ospreys to take with us in the November.  We did have many sightings of Osprey but never close enough to read the rings.

bjane, just to piggyback on WVsusan's response, I am in the U.S. and I just use my credit card to donate an amount in pounds.  The amount is automatically converted to dollars on my statement.  If you are not sure how many dollars your donation will be, then you can check the conversion to give you an idea but you can skip the conversion step if you choose.

Hi Richard, Alice and everyone else. I've been a bit awol of late for one reason or another so am a bit late in responding to your update and request for donations.

A couple of years ago we decided that we'd stop sending as many Christmas cards as it was such a waste of money, money that could go to a worthy cause. After our two visits to LG in the summer I told Hubby, that I knew exactly where this year's Christmas card money was going. I will make our donation very soon.

Paula - thank you.  That's kind of you to donate to this project "in lieu" of sending Christmas cards.  Much appreciated.  To-date this blog apperal has raised £2,530.  -  Richard

Richard - so sorry that the fixed government pension prevents me from sending to your leccy fund.

I liked the idea of the post suggesting you get army/other vols to gig your trench?

I still have wonderful memories of my trip to LG some years ago.

I am keeping up my membership for as long as possible on DD so hope you will get some benefit from my continued membership.

(BTW -  I still pay as though for a couple as it is cheaper {pro rata}  than for a singleton. We divorced some time ago and £9 pq does not hurt too much yet! Is there a single pensioner rate in the pipeline? RATHER THAN A SINGLES SURCHARGE? LOL

This could maybe be put to HO as a consideration?

Good luck with the fund raising. Great to see the current figure!
