Deep in Rockingham Forest, where red kites fly and wildflowers bloom...

Summer is a-coming in...

After the cold weather at the start of Spring, things are definitely now hotting up. Swallows are showing off their aerobatic skills around the centre buildings and building their nests. In the woods, cuckoos are calling with what has to be one of the most evocative of all bird calls whilst grasshopper warblers can be heard with their unusual 'reeling' song.

And not to forget the red kites. As I sit typing this there are four kites perched in a tree next to the centre, allowing superb close views. The nest camera is due to come online soon too..

This weekend is an especially good time to come and visit. On Saturday we will rubbing the sleep from our eyes and getting up early for a dawn chorus walk, starting at 5 am. And on Sunday we are holding a 'Meet the RSPB' day, with a whole host of activities for young and old alike.

Welcome to the new Top Lodge blog. The red kite nest camera will come online in May. But do come and visit us in the meantime. Ravens fly overhead, warblers are singing in the woods and adders bask in the sun. Plus, look our for our dawn chorus walk on 3 May (5 - 8 am) and our exciting 'Meet the RSPB' event on 4 May.
