Hello Folks!Be they big or small, insects are undoubtedly highly fascinating creatures. Chances are wherever you are, whatever you're doing, an insect is not a million miles away and you might not even know it! So what better reason than to have a quiz to see how much you know about them.
Each Monday for 12 weeks, I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the insect. On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. On Friday I will post the answer along with some additional information for your interest.MYSTERY INSECT QUIZ#9An overlooked nautical aspect.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

MarJus Good one Rach!
Well, I can't think of anything better! I'm just useless with cryptic clues!
Ooh I like that Rach, I'll go with Water Boatman, for the moment anyway.
Caroline in Jersey
like that one Rach, well thought out
I,ll go for water measurer
Ray
a good laugh is better than a tonic
Clue: perfectly designed for moving across the surface of water.
Ah well! That's the dingy skipper out! We've had pond skater before in a quiz, and the water boatman is 'under' water, so I reckon Ray's got this one right with the water measurer!
Sticking with water measurer
edit The boatman sounds good for the second clue, but Mrs T likes the rarer and I do believe there is a lesser boatman
To me it could depend on how criptic the 2nd clue is. If its not too criptic then designed to go on water could be a pond skater but if its slightly criptic then it could refer to a boat - and a water boatman. The overlooked bit of the first clue could then be the lesser water boatman.
No idea really!
Congratulations to all of you who guessed the dragonfly Keeled skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens). First a bit about the clues: An overlooked nautical aspect. Something that may be overlooked, might be skimmed over and the nautical aspect refers to the keel of a boat. The second clue: perfectly designed for moving across the surface of water, also has a water/nautical theme and when birds or insects move across the surface of the water, this is often referred to as skimming.
Though they may appear similar to the Black-tailed skimmer, the Keeled skimmer has a slimmer build and no black tip, its thorax also has pale stripes. Both the female and young lack any abdominal markings. Favouring peat bogs for breeding, the Keeled skimmer is most active from June to September. The flight behaviour of the Keeled skimmer is skittish with frequent hovering. A picture of a Keeled skimmer can be seen here.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery insect quiz!

Nope, no way either...that was fiendish
Not in a million years for me! Lol!
