Waggy has a mate

  • At long last Waggy my pied wagtail is no longer a bachelor boy. He has found a mate. It's taken him long enough, but he is so proud he has brought her to see me. She is still a bit timid and sits on the single storey extension roof, wagging her tail and calling. She then flies down to almost land next to him but changes her mind at the last minute and hovers a few seconds before returning to the roof. I expect the mealworms will get the better of her before long.

  • Hi, sparrow

So happy he has found love at last. Hopefully there will soon be the patter of tiny feet

  • Hi Sparrow

    At last,.

Mine has not brought his mate for a while think they may be nesting some where.

Hey farmer, farmer, put away the D.D.T now. Give me spots on my apples, but leave me the birds and the bees, please!

  • Hi Sparrow

Good news for your waggy. "Love is in the air.......... everywhere I look around".

Mine seems to have disappeared - haven't seen him for a couple of weeks now.

  • Hi Sparrow, that's great news. My female P.W. seems to have disappeared - and the cat next door has acquired a collar - I'd better not find out that the two facts are related otherwise there will be one less cat in the neighbourhood...

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • OOOHHHH how lovely Sparrow, little baby piedys, it's so nice to see them pair up, I feel daft, put when any of my regulars turn up with a mate I feel so proud of them.

  • Hi Squirrel

I also hope those two events aren't related - but I find my waggy is very fast, so maybe yours would be too fast for a cat. Maybe she is sitting on eggs?

My Mrs. Waggy must have had a garden restaurant somewhere else in the neighbourhood because Mr. Waggy isn't here as often as he was. I think maybe they are alternating between her pad and his.

  • Brilliant news I am sure she will get more confident and be unable to resist the mealworms.

    Enjoy the world around you

  • Great news Sparrow! Hope to hear better news soon from you too Squirrel...

  • Thanks Sparrow and MarJus. It is possible she is sitting on eggs now I guess as they were here together almost constantly for the past three weeks. Prior to that the male had been here all day, every day since early January and now he still comes around but doesn't arrive early a.m. and park himself on the trellis for the whole day as he used to. Rather he comes and goes, as all the other birds do.

  • Hi Squirrel,

It very much sounds like they may be sitting. Fingers crossed your numbers multiply!

  • Hi Sparrow, as Chairman of the WAGS I'm so pleased to hear you have a pair of Pieds

I'm also very impressed that you have been able to seperate the sexes! and you have confirmed it is a male and female?

If they stay around during the next month or so, keep an eye on them and see if you can spot any gathering of nest material!

Oh dear, I was hoping you wouldn't pick up on this and I would be obluiged to show my ignorance!!! I have looked at the information in the link for white (pied) wagtails you gave us, but it is very confusing. Maybe you could help?

The first photo is the only one I have of the new arrival. The second photo is my regular.

  • Well done Sparrow, how great if they were a pair - which I'm sure they are, would have thought 2 males would be quarrelling wouldn't they?  Can't wait to see your photos of the offspring - how cute would that be?
