Hi To All.
Try your hand at this. The idea is to give some clues that relate to a bird species and the person who succeeds in its identification gives clues to another bird.
Here are the clues for mine.
My name says I'm Great although my bill is shorter than some of my relations. I have three striking wing bars and when I take off I reveal my white tail feathers. I love to be in the nettles and if you see me consider yourself lucky.
Good Luck.

Is that two or three wing bars? I can think of something that fits the bill (if you'll excuse the pun) but the field guides say two wing bars.

Hi Chris,
Definatly three wing bars.
Oh well, scratch Great Snipe then. You might have made this a bit tricky...
Can't think of anything! Quite stumped!

You've got it with Great Snipe but my book says three wingbars and also shows this in a photo.
Can't give in that easily!
Do I take it that the bird in question has the name; Great (something) then? Or is that a red herring? Can't seem to find any Great (XXXXX) birds that fit the description :-(
Sounds like a Goldfinch!

It's all around us - 24/7 :-)
Sounds (also) like a "Jay" - but not in the "nettles" and no "Great" there either. Quite illusive though :-)
Did Chris win with Great Snipe? Does he have to post the next description?

I was thinking Great Snipe too but could find no evidence of 3 wing bars anywhere. Perhaps 3 bar Gt Snipes are lucky like four leaved clovers.
Every day a little more irate about bird of prey persecution, and I have a cat - Got a problem with that?
Hi,
John B (not the sloop) I was thinking Great Snipe too but could find no evidence of 3 wing bars anywhere. Perhaps 3 bar Gt Snipes are lucky like four leaved clovers.
Yes the answer was Great Snipe. The clues I gave where given from information taken from the collins guide to british birds and it definatley says threewingbars and also clearly shows them in a photo.
We now await some clues from Chris.
Sorry about the lack of reply for a while, I've been just a tad busy.
Interesting what you say about the Collins guide. Mine doesn't mention the number of the wing bars and shows two and a half (one very short one) in the illustration. Wheras my Mitchell Beazley pocket guide says two and shows two! What is a birdwatcher to believe?
OK, anyway, new bird:
I am named after a goddess
I eat insects
I have not always lived here
I fly like a woodpecker
Guess away!
Little owl?
There is something new to learn everyday...

Did I make it too easy? :) Yes, little owl it is

Not at all but the goddess reference gave it away for me ;)
OK, now I'll have to come up with some clues. I will post something over the weekend...
