  • Hi everyone am new on here and i just needed to tell someone about the happenings in the tree in our drive. This morning I noticed a lot of activity and after watching a while from the bedroom window with and without bins and obviously plenty of research (looking at different bird books), found there were at least a dozen Redwings and Fieldfares darting in and out of the tree. Under further observation I noticed movement on a top branch right up against the main trunk. So exciting it was an owl. Beautiful long back and golden. But couldnt make out if it was a barn owl or not, due to the smaller branches and leaves as it was a rather large conifer. Was lucky my fella treated me to a smashing set of bins last birthday. But got harder to see as the light left us. What an exciting day.

  • Hi Dee welcome to the forum from Sheffield.

Wow a brilliant spot with the Owl i'm sure someone will have an idea what it may be..a lot of us are getting Fieldfares and Redwings due to the weather

    Regards Alan

My photos are here and here

  • Most likely a Tawny. Barn owls are very pale , practically white , I think you'd have noticed that.

    I know nowt :)

The owl sounds like a long eared to me, they do cuddle up close to the trunk, If it is well spotted

  • Thanks guys, I had a look this morning the owl was gone. But it was lovely to see. The other birds are still here though.

  • Hi Dee, and welcome from me in Sheffield.  Great spot with the owl, particularly when there was so much other activity going on.  I can't identify your owl being no expert, but I'd agree that it probably wasn't a Barn Owl.  There have been plenty of reports of Fieldfares, in fact my sister emailed me yesterday to say she'd had 20 in the garden for the first time.  I've never actually seen one, but I keep looking.

  • Quite exciting watching the birds rushing too and fro all weekend in a feeding frenzy. They totally cleared the surrounding gardens of berries and then today had moved onto another place. Dont think they have gone far as can still here them sending messages to each other across the trees when i walk locally. We also had a black cap in the garden on the feeder (we have been here since April last year and that is the first one we have had here) plus a couple of blue tits (another first). Will keep looking!

  • Hi again Dee4, Check below the tree for owl pellets also droppings on the branches, both signs of roosting
