I was picking up some composted reed at a local RSPB reserve and the guy who helped me told me about this forum so here I am. I've always been interested in RSPB because of their emphasis on habitat and how that benifits all wildlife. My current projects are a bog(that's what the compost was for) and pond and a very small wild flower meadow in my garden. I will probably be around on the waterfeature section mostly.

Hi I'm new too -sound like you have a fantastic garden, where did you get the composted reed from - I am developing a bog garden at school with a small pond that would be ideal... please help!

Hi Colin
I just joined yesterday and have received a very warm welcome already! I am planning a small pond for the corner of my allotment so I am sure I will catch up with you at some time!
Welcome from me also. This forum is proving a great place to exchange ideas, make friends and ask for help so I know you will enjoy it here. I think I have already seen the photo of your pond in progress - very impressive it is too.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi Colin.
Welcome to the forum. I've been a member for a few days now, and am thoroughly enjoying posting here. You'll love it here. It's a great place to exchange ideas, pick up tips, and generally enjoy being part of a community that shares a passion for wildlife.

The composted reeds come from the RSPB reserve at Ham Wall near Glastonbury in Somerst. As part of the management of the reserve (old peat workings) a lot of reed needs to be cut annually and someone came up with the idea of composting it. Looks like it will hold a lot of water. My bog soil is 2 parts composted reed I part garden compost (made from kitchen waste, garden waste, grass cuttings and chicken poo mixed with a little wood shavings and straw ) and one part sub soil from the excavation of the hole. Final consistency seems quite good but i haven't filled it up with water yet. If you follow the Flickr link I'll keep posting pictures as it progresses
