today i found an injured bird, i have been in touch with the rspca and i am taking him/her to the vets tomorrow. i have been researching what type of bird it is and it seems that its a 'lesser spotted woodpecker' which is apparently rare in wales. i have put him in a box in a dark quiet room with a bird ball, some water and a few branches from a nearby tree. i think his wing and left eye are injured.
i was wondering if i should i check on him frequently or just leave him. i dont know much about birds and i just want to make sure he is as comfortable as possible.

thanks for your reply. i have rung around this morning and have found a vet who specialises in birds so fingers crossed (woody) will be ok, will let you know later
i took the bird to the vet this morning but sadly they could do nothing for him a shattered collar bone its very sad he was a beautiful bird. i offered to pay for the treatment and look after him but they could do nothing. on a positive note i have bought some books about birds and instead of just feeding them i am going to learn more about the birds in my garden. thanks shelley

Very sad, but good has come of it if it encourages you to learn a bit more about your garden birds. This forum is the best place to start .... but warning - you will become addicted!
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Shelley,
Welcome aboard, Very sad about you're woodpecker, the same thing happened a few years ago with me. I found an injured magpie, took him home (after chasing it around for a good 10 minutes and got specialist help but the poor thing had half his/her wing ripped off,
Hope you stick around :)
