My name is Seth and I am co-founder of a new yearly charity event called the Big Twitch. Some work colleagues and I are setting out on May 13th and 14th with the aim of spotting as many species of bird in 48 hours as possible. The more species we see, the more money we raise for charity. Different teams are covering different counties: I am heading the Kent team, and there are teams covering Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset.
We are all keen amateur birdwatchers but not experts by any means. We would love to hear from anyone in these counties able to spare some time to help us on our mission to spot, and more importantly, identify as many species as possible. Last year, with the help of some wonderfully kind birders, we raised over six thousand pounds for Alzheimer's Society. Highlight - a Barred Warbler!
This year we are hoping to raise ten thousand pounds for the Children's Trust. We are also challenging other birding groups - or individuals - to do their own Big Twitch. Can you see more species than us in the same 48 hours? Any species you see, that we don’t, we can add to our overall list and we raise even more money.
We really do need as much help as possible to hit our target. We have a blog:
www.thebiggertwitch.blogspot.com (Although it seems clicking on it doesn't work! So please copy and paste into your browser if you would like to check us out!)
and our email address is firstname.lastname@example.org. Please do email me if you can show us around your patch for a couple of hours, or if you want to challenge us and do your own Big Twitch on May 13th and 14th. Thank you!
Your link doesn't work - try this: http://thebiggertwitch.blogspot.com/.
I'm in Kent and may be able to help, though my local patch isn't that brilliant for species diversity... anyway, I'll have a proper look at your blog now :)
Wow- you should get about 175 :)
Thank you very much for getting in touch. I have added a note on the original post saying people have to copy and paste the url into their browser - what a pain! Ah well, these things are sent to try us...
And thank you for your kind offer! Can i ask where your patch is? My family and I are actually about to move to Kent - near Rainham. So I dont know the area incredibly well. Although last year Dungeness was amazing!
Thank you again for your offer of help - perhaps I can get in touch a little nearer to 13/14 May to see if you are still available?
That would be amazing. Last year we had two teams and only did Kent. We got 103 - included Buff-Breasted Sandpiper and the first Barred Warbler in Kent for about eleven years if memory serves... Six thousand three hundred and thirty four pounds raised!
Hope you have a very sucessful twich. Unfortunately I'm too far North to help but wish you luck
I live in Lancashire so not close enough to be of any use - and my ID skills are non existent anyway.
Thanks anyway! Seth
